Today we're gonna talk about another thing I find weird with Westerners posting about Russia online - the trend of pseudo-Russian and faux Cyrillic text. This "fake Russian" is everywhere, including famous movies like Borat, and something about it just triggers a weird reaction in me. Let's discuss it. Smash like and sub thx xoxo

    Indeed. Do you know what is even more cringe? Adults who have somehow learned that _some_ cyrillic letters are the same as latin letters, and then just assume all letters that look the same ARE the same. This is how people end up believing a restaurant in Russian is called a pectopah, pronounced "pekh-to-pahh".

    I feel part øf yøur pain, I am Danish and when pop culture tries to make something danish they just slap æ ø å in at random places, it is fun but kind of fries some code in your brain when you read it.

  • @Hand-in-Shot_Productions

    @Hand-in-Shot_Productions

    I am not Danish (I am from the US), but I can see why it is confusing for Danes and other Nordic people! I don't know much Danish, but here are the letters, from what I could tell. Ø ø: equivalent to an "oe" sound in English, and also to the word "island". In other words, your sardonic opening to your comment is "I feel part oef yoeur pain". Æ æ: equivalent to an "eh" sound in English, as in "mediæval" (as the contemporary spelling of the time is) and not, as some people may think, the "ae" in "aeroplane". Å å: equivalent to "aa", like the "au" in "Paul". In other words, an English-speaker that uses Ø for the English "oh" (unless it is "oe"), Æ for "ae" (as in "aeroplane"), or Å for the English A is getting their alphabets wrong! And that's not to mention all of those people whö püt the ümläüt över rändöm English vöwels tö evöke ä Germänic feel while nöt mäking sense tö än äctüäl Germän! Or, to transcribe the German's confused grunts into the English alphabet (with aid from the Danish æ used correctly), those "whoo poot the oomlet oover rændoom English voowels too evooke æ Germænic feel while noot mæking sense too æn æctooæl Germæn"!

    How often is Greek Week written as Grisk Wisk for that reason? ("GRΣΣK WΣΣK" Would be pronounced "Grisk Wisk"). The "A" in the Kia (or rather, KIΛ) is ominously rendered as a Λ in the logo. A car with a mediocre crash test rating would thus be ominously read as "kill," for anyone that knows the Greek Alphabet. Anyway, you know the Greek Alphabet. Did you by any chance join a Society? UPDATE: I am fixing few things, at the request of the commenters, to avoid further confusions. 6:33 I will clear up few things... Non-Slavic languages: - Ӊ is Kildin Sami's letter, which I didn't know before, I had to search it up - Ѝ is a variation of И(i), but is not used anywhere officially as a separate letter - Ԡ is not Serbian, although it looks similar to Serbian Љ(ly), it was used in Abkhaz language in the past - Ҭ is again in the Abkhaz language, it is a variation of T(t) - Ԑ is used in Enets and Khanty languages, it is also similar to small Greek ε - Ҫ is a variation of C(s) used in Bashkir and Chuvash languages - Ұ is Kazakh letter, it is a variation of letter Ү(ü) - Ң is used in many languages, some of them are Tatar, Kazakh and Kyrgyz, it is a variation of letter H(n) - Ҥ is used in Altaj language, it is a variation of letter H(n) Slavic languages: - S(dz) and Љ(ly) is used in Macedonian language (although some might consider Macedonian a Bulgarian dialect, such issue wasn't globally solved yet) - Ш(sh), Д(d), Ф(f), Ц(ts), Ч(ch) and П(p) is used in all Slavic languages, that are using Cyrillic as their writing script - Й(y) and Я(ya) is used in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Bulgarian - Э(e) is used in Russian and Belarusian - I(i) is used in Ukrainian and Belarusian - Ï(yi) is used in Ukrainian - Є(ye) is in Ukrainian and it is identical to a Russian E, in terms of sound - Џ(dzh, j) is a letter of Macedonian and Serbian language (although some might consider Macedonian a Bulgarian dialect, such issue wasn't globally solved yet) Bullshit: - D, G, L and V are not Cyrillic letters, just Latin, although the creator of the meme could have been more creative and use old Slavic Ѵ instead of a classic V I will not cover Slavic languages that use Latin script entirely, since it is pointless, as this video discusses the "fake Russian" that uses mostly Cyrillic script to make it appear Russian. Also note that I react to a specific part of the video (6:33) and I covered already all Latin letters that appeared in that example.

There u have it in both Serbian cyrillic and latin, we are the only European language where latin/cyrillic are equal and everyone use both whenever they like without any restrictions, but without mixing them up like in this vid (although it became common practice for net trolls and advertisments).

    @@tenko5541 I don't read much Cyrillic or any Japanese, but as an American who speaks English and Spanish, I could see why fake Japanese is worse than fake Cyrillic. With fake Cyrillic, you can at least read it as _something_ ironically amusing, like "Russian" to "ЯussiaИ", and then to "Yaussiai". With fake Japanese (as well as fake Chinese and fake Korean), all you get is English written with a paintbrush... which isn't remotely Asian at all to those who can read those alphabets! For more "Yaussiai", the official language of American "comrades": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faux_Cyrillic and www.reddit.com/r/Fauxcyrillic/ For the "Chinese" of the title cover for _Mulan_ (both 1998 and 2020): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wonton_font For more misuses of foreign scripts around the world: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typeface#Ethnic_typefaces and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_branding#Foreign_orthography

    I'm an American who studied Russian in college. I learned to type Russian on an IBM typewriter with a Cyrillic type ball. These bizarre uses of the Cyrillic alphabet always bothered me, too. That continued even as I lost the Russian skills I learned in school. But when I want to type something that I don't want anyone to read, I type English with the Cyrillic alphabet. It wouldn't be a perfect code. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of Russian, Ukrainian, etc would be able to read it. But it keeps it confidential from everyone I know. I had to make up a few things to make it work.
