Fake Canon Camcorder Review and Teardown

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've tested a lot of generic camcorders and this one has something even more egregious about it than most. It clearly rips off the look of a Canon camcorder. This isn't the first generic camcorder that I've seen that does this. I've seen cameras that have copied a JVC camcorder down to surprising detail, at least in terms of molding those details into the plastic. Let's see if the camera is actually any good.
Any support is appreciated. Thanks!

I wish I understood how this is legal, it's literal land waste. All the energy and resources just to make this, just to end up in the landfill.

I was in a major bind and ended up buying the Hone 185D based on your video to solve a welding problem at an out of town site on 120v power. I just had Amazon ship it there. It was cheap enough that I could kind of buy it for a single purpose solution, and the results worked out great! Thanks so much for the recommendation.

I've been looking for a camcorder to film skate parts for. I love that grainy aesthetic in some of your other videos reviewing the offbrand cameras. That "1080p 60fps" that is clearly NOT 1080p but still a nice smooth 60fps just looks great to me. I know you recommended an actual brand like sony or canon but do you think there'd be anything that could capture that look in the $70 range? I was looking at hi-8 cams for a while but a tape to SD card converter is like $180 alone, so I'd rather just suck it up and actually use a digital camera.

Unfortunately, while these cameras are all very similar in a lot of ways, in some ways they are also inconsistent. It's tough to say for sure that one or another will definitely provide the look you are going for. If you search "camcorder" on Amazon, you'll find dozens of options around that price level. I don't know if you'll find any that provide 60 fps at that price, but I would say to just pick one that lists the features you want and try it. Just be warned, some that claim 60fps are NOT 60fps. And sometimes the 60fps mode will not play back properly or be recognized by video editing programs because of inconsistent framerates and codecs. Also be aware that most don't have optical zoom, the ones that do have poor auto focus. And only one that I've ever tested had image stabilization and it was mediocre at best. Many of them have quality and reliability issues and most of them have terrible audio. I'm not saying you can't make one work for you. Just want to be sure you understand the possible downsides.

@@bigtb1717 Thank you so much for the reply. I think there is no way around getting around getting the cam I want without spending some cheddar haha. My school filmmaking teacher has old Canon camcorders that I've been fixing up. I plan on using one once I get whatever weird batteries they need. Again, appreciate the reply a ton. Your camcorder videos have been a major help and do know many are very grateful for them.

I think you'd be better served by a real camera and get the effects you want with a filter in post. Any midrange consumer camera from a real brand would suffice

Just asking, why cheap camcorders have a block of metal? For higher price when shipping/postage? Stabilization? Lie about weight?

My guess is to reduce returns. It makes me think of the line in the movie Jurassic Park: "Are they heavy? Then they are expensive, put them back." There is a perceived quality that comes with a device that is heavy. If people get one of these cameras and it feels lightweight, it might feel more like a "toy" and may make people question it more and more likely to send it back within the return window. If it's heavier, they may give it more of a chance. That's just my thoughts. The stabilization thing doesn't seem very plausible to me. It would have to weigh 5-6 pounds before you'd really notice a meaningful difference in actual stability because the sheer weight dampens your body movements.

The quality of the chunks of metal are outstanding! As for the camcorder, I guess kudos to the rip off design team! Thanks for sharing! Btw what was the rattle in the camera and where was the mic? I have a Panasonic tm900 camcorder from 2014 that blows away the video and has gyro stabilization. Did you see if the mic jack was even a thing?

I realized while editing that I never found what was rattling around. Bummer. I did check the mic jack and the all the terminals are there, but who knows if they go to anything on the board.

Sorry, I also saw you asked about the microphone. There was a pin-hole in the body and the mic was behind that hole, but it wasn't glued in place. The wire for the mic was taped to the inside about an inch from the mic and the mic was sort of dangling about a quarter inch from the hole.

I have an old Canon camcorder....1080P, I never use it. If I do video, something I rearly do, I use my EOS-M with an external mic and a couple of small LCD panels. I think I paid about 200 USD for all of it. Or I use my 70D. :)

I have to turn down these video cameras at least once a week. I tell them flat out I know it’s junk and that’s what I would say in a video. Now the ones that are like $20 advertised for "kids" I have no problem with those. Sometimes I’m genuinely surprised by those and as long as it’s for a kid…no problem.

I agree. Even this camera, if it was $50 I'd be like, whatever. But when they advertise it in a misleading way and charge $100-$300, that's when I think it should be called out.

I have this actual camera and it performs really good. I use filters external microphones, even a wireless mircophone, and acturally works. I have tested it with ND-filters, UV filter and I'm waiting on my color filters. We're going to use it to report news, make a police series and other stuff. The quality we get out of the post-editing of the images after recording them.

When you say "actual" camera, do you mean Canon? If you mean this generic camera, I wonder if some versions have better internals, because the jittery footage from this camera is pretty rough.

This "generic" camera has a SONY Exmor IMX386 sensor, which is used in many smartphones. Could they have gotten more out of it? Yes! Mine doesn't rattle. I use filters on it and the image is great. Yes, you have to be a little MacGyver. The internal microphone is not the best, but the wireless microphone and the external wired microphone are great. I can even connect a toy microphone to it and it works. My "generic" camera comes from their own factory shop. The brand is KOMERY. I can record slow motion video and fast motion video (time lapse). For me it's a perfect tool.

The physical design of the body of this camcorder is a direct copy of a Canon camcorder. That's what I mean by "fake Canon." It directly rips off the look, right down to minute details.
