I suppose it's because we got no "way" of creating gold, implying the quantity of gold on the planet is finite. It could be an other "rare" metal, but i suppose it's mainly because of our history (human).

The design of the gold bars should have say 5 holes drilled through to make this impossible. Sure you could make a tungsten core with that shape but good luck taking the core out of the original and wrapping what's left onto the tungsten.

I was waiting for this exact idea to pop up somewhere. Not surprised in the least.

Tungsten is not magnetic so it won't do you any good.

Use Ultrasonic Thickness Meter to verify your caliper measurements. If more than 60% difference, THEN you may want to drill it. UTM is cheap.
