you are right , Sikhs and especially sant bhrindwale never asked for Khalistan. All Sikhs asked for was gurbani recitation from golden temple to be broadcast on radio and a train to be named golden temple express and most important less of central govt interference in states. Now that really put scare in central govt so they are the ones who started screaming OH LOOK SIKHS WANT INDEPENDENCE. The name Khalistan was invented by congress govt,, Sikhs were surprised to find that they were supposed to be part of Khalistan. Ask shatrugan Sinha the actor who was told reason he was not invited to patna university celebrations was that the central govt in delhi decides who is to be invited.. MICROMANAGENENT. Now off course lot of water has flowed under the bridge with all the killings of hundred of thousends of innocent sikh youth so it will never be the same. that hindu sikh brotherhood is done thanks to the brahmin central govt. The brahmin has always had a fear complex which makes him fear the dalit the buddhist the muslim the Christian the sikh etc and he ways fond of quoting Chanakya to prove how smart he is and yet he was enslaved thruout history and his women carried away but he never stopped insting look how smart I am.And yet thruout history this brahmin sucked up to the one who conquered him and took his women.Sad part is that this brahmin convinced followers of guru ravidass to let the brahmin install idols in their temples and eventually convinced them that they are hindus but be ware LOW CASTE HINDUS. Look at reality any you will realise that this brahmin is really the minority in India and yet how he has convinced the rest of indian humanity that they are hindus too,,,, but low caste hindus so he can fuck with your women but you low caste hindus cannot mess around with his women

I have known Gen Brar when he was a Brigadier in the late seventies. At the time of this operation I was posted at Jallandhar. He is a thorough gentleman and a professional soldier. Inspite of his personal feelings at the time of the operation, he kept them aside and carried out the assigned operation with success notwithstanding the terms of reference imposed. It needs a lot of character and discipline to execute to a task like this. He is a true soldier for whom duty is above everything else. This task is a lot tougher than fighting an enemy equipped with all available weaponry.

It was Pakistan's interference & weapons across the border & political masters or power seekers of punjab who waged morcha against central govt & the reluctance of the then prime Minister to fulfill those demands then state terrorism. Also injustice to a very Capable General Shubeg Singh who was a man to be reckoned with 'Liberation of Bangla Desh '.Another factor was youth unrest which all lead to political crisis turned into religious fold .It could have been averted.

The Richard Nixon administration in the US had initiated a "covert action plan" in collusion with General Yahya Khan's government in Pakistan in 1971 to encourage a separatist movement in Punjab, This plan envisaged the encouragement of a separatist movement among the Sikhs for an independent state to be called Khalistan. In 1971, one saw the beginning of a joint covert operation by the US intelligence community and Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence to create difficulties for India in Punjab. The then Pakistani military ruler Yahya Khan invited Jagjit Singh Chauhan to Pakistan, "lionised" him as a leader of Sikhs and handed over some Sikh holy relics kept in Pakistan, which Chauhan took to the UK to win a following in the Sikh diaspora. "With American and Pakistani encouragement, the activities of Chauhan continued till 1977.

At 23:00, interviewer asks “ was any effort made to reach out to the people inside to leave peacefully?” Gen Brar fumbles for a few seconds and responds: we asked the Intelligence to do so and they told that their efforts didn’t work out.” In other words, we have no clear record of those efforts. If we put it in perspective to Gen Sinha’s interview in the same series where he refers to answers from the Defence Minister, “it’s all politics”, we can extract a more judicious understanding of what was going on in the country at that time under the pretext of maintaining law and order. More than a decade ago, I had interviewed a senior officer from Intelligence posted in Punjab during this time and his words still resonate with me, “terrorism was created”. Whatever happened was deplorable; the merciless killings and a state of lawlessness for decades to come. Even today, Punjab has lacks a sophisticated educational infrastructure (IITs & IIMs) and youth is being pushed to unemployment and drugs. Regardless of whichever religion, community or state is impacted, our country should not be a playground for politicians. Period.

I am a Sikh who grew up during Punjab insurgency. The reason behind Blue Star was not bad. There were terrorists hiding inside the holy place, who had fortified it with latest deadly weapons, and they would kill hundreds of innocent civilians and then go hide in Golden Temple, capitalizing on the fact that the armed police was not allowed to enter to fight them (some hypocrite Sikhs criticize the army for entering with weapons but not the terrorists themselves who had ALREADY desecrated the holy place). So, an operation was definitely needed. But the operation was executed poorly, either due to confusion, misinformation or paranoia and many wrong decisions were taken. One big wrong decision was the day chosen for execution. But it's easy to say it now that they were wrong decisions. At that time, they probably did what they thought was best based on whatever information they had. Anyway, looking back now, a siege-operation would have been better in this case, blocking all food supplies, even though it would taken many more days. But then again, the army was worried that they would be attacked by hordes of outraged Sikhs from Punjab's villages and not only put army's own lives in danger but also the operation would effectively fail.

Sometimes they take decisions based on intelligent speculation. So some of the decisions can be based on wrong information/speculation. Whenever this tragic massacre of 1984 is remembered, the wounds of the mind are refreshed and even today, 38 years later, it is very sad to admit that our holy place of worship had been bombed by the army of 'our own' country and turned into rubble. This incident filled the mind with a sense of alienation which is still alive But aftee 38 years ,going through introspection one can conclude that blaming only KS Brar is not perhaps justified because he is being blamed for it only by those who are either naive or those who were themselves guilty but to divert attention from them, all the blame was laid on K .S. Brar who was actually bound to do his duty as a soldier. Indira Gandhi, her kitchen cabinet, some fanatical Hindus and Sikhs, the Akali leadership - mainly Parkash Singh, Badal, Gurchan Singh Tohra, Balwant Singh Ramuwalia,Surjit Singh Barnala,Balwant Singh etc etc were responsible for this massacre. They are prime accused. Bhindrawala, who was once a religious leader, fell prey to these cunning foxes and could not understand the dirty politics of these shrewd foxes. This tragic incident wounded the psyche of the Sikh community and sense of alienation prevailed forever.

@@imajm123 -- You're right to great extent. Bhinderawala shouldn't have used Golden Temple as his den. That monster was created by Congress to counter Akali Dal in Punjab as Indra Gandhi wanted to win 1985 elections at every cost. But Bhinderawala proved like a gene out of bottle. When he was gathering ammunition and arsenal in Darbar Sahib, why didn't any security agencies prevent him. Why and how ammunition was allowed to carry to Darbar Sahib by hiding in trucks. Where was the Police,CRPF and BSF ? Actually Indra Gandhi wanted to teach lesson to Akali Dal but eventually she did it with the Sikhs. Perhaps it was the first time in the history of mankind when army of any country invaded the shrine of it's own citizens, own community, no matter who was at fault. Bhinderawala could be very easily expelled from shrine ....exactly likewise it was done 2 years later thru Operation Black Thunder when few terrorists were forced to exit by raising their hands. Similar approach could be adopted as in case of Bhinderawala. Unfortunately, Indra Gandhi had to pay the price by losing her life. Consequently 25000 Sikhs were massacred in India....many of them burnt alive by putting burning tyres into their necks. A special kind of explosive chemical was made available to killers to burn alive the Sikhs. It was ironical that Rajiv Gandhi said immediately after he took over as Prime Minister of India that... Some earth shudders when a big tree falls. "जब कोई बड़ा पेड़ गिरता है तो थोड़ी बहुत धरती हिलती ही है"। 38 years have gone by but these bitter words still haunts me...haunts Sikhs. This whole act of Barbarism emotionally and mentally alienated the Sikhs forever. Bhindrawala and his men were misusing and exploiting Sikh sentiments to achieve their own selfish, fundamentalist and hateful goals. Their modus operandi and thinking was not much different from the Taliban! I am a Sikh myself but I call them the Sikh-Taliban. It's hypocritical for some Sikhs to object to the entry of the armed forces into the holy premises, while being okay with (or at least tolerant of) armed-terrorists residing inside. It's not the army that desecrated the holy place. Bhindrawala and his men ALREADY did that when they would hide there with their AK-47s after killing innocents, many of who were dragged out from buses and killed just because they were Hindus.

@@maanewalia A few points 1) A government tool? I grew up in Punjab (during the Punjab insurgency FYI) but have been living in the US since many years. I have absolutely nothing to do with Indian government, who I criticize on many aspects, especially on the point that they did not bring the perpetrators of 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom to justice. This will FOREVER be a kala daag on Indian government. 2) Carrying a kirpan is a must for Amritdhari Sikh, not mass-killing machine guns & AK 47s. This aspect of Sikhi is recognized & respected by even the Indian government, which is the ONLY government in the entire world which allows Sikhs to carry kirpans in certain high security restricted places where NO OTHER weapon is allowed by anyone else. The only exception is made for Amritdhari Sikhs. 3) I do not agree with the way Indira Gandhi's administration carried out Operation Blue Star. I think instead of an all-out attack by the army, they should have adopted the strategy of "siege and wait" (surround the premises, cut off their food supply etc, then enter in a few days after they are already weakened). That would have minimized the casualties. Indira Gandhi acted in her typical undemocratic, dictatorial & rash way in dealing with terrorists hiding in Harmandir Sahib. But to say, that nothing should have been done is not only idiotic but INHUMAN to the nth degree. You expected that Bhindrawala should have been allowed to carry on his terror campaign just because he was doing it in the garb of religion? So, Indira's mistake was not that she took action but rather she took action in the wrong way. 4) As per the original Khalsa panth, the kirpan is NEVER to be used on unarmed, innocent common people. Guru Gobind Singh fought against tyrannical Mughals and their ARMED FORCES who were forcefully converting Hindus/Sikhs to Islam but never targeted common Muslims. Bhindrawala ordered killings of innocent men & women from the sacred premises, many times just because they opposed his violent ideology & methods. Many times even total innocents were killed during terror attacks (I still remember how innocent Hindu travelers were pulled out from Punjab roadways buses and brutally killed just because they were Hindus). Bhindrawala and his men acted more like mafia dons rather than true believers of an ideology. 5) You can deny all you want. But I grew up during those times and have seen things with my own eyes. That is primarily the reason why the Khalistani cause lost all its support among Sikh population which ACTUALLY lives in Punjab (Sikhs living abroad do not know the ground realities). The Sikhs in Punjab had already tasted what Khalistan would look like - the most appropriate term would be "Sikh Talibanistan".

U call him rat or lion it is upto U but he is the contemporary of Guru gobind singh. He killed Afzal khan of bijapur, he killed the son of shaista khan the mama of auranzeb, and made shaista khan run from marathaland with 5 lakh army. he fought 250 battles in his short life and won all.raja jai singh persuaded him to meet aurangjeb but aurangjeb imprisoned him in Agra. But who can imprison the maratha lion. With the wisdom and deeds he went free and revenged appropriately by winning all forts again.even after shivaji,The Maratha empire ruled indirectly almost whole of india. Can U fairly call such a person rat. It is the job of a professional soldier to carry out the instructions of his commanders, in this case the Indian government. If his conscience does not allow him to comply then the only honourable action would be to take off his uniform. He cannot be held accountable for the political decision. His accountability rests with the strategy, method, execution, quality and outcomes of the military action. I cannot glean from the interview whether the General himself (rtd) thinks that he did a good job or not. The metric for this needs to be high as india at that time had a large army and access to advice and support from friendly countries. So not a fledgling banana republic with a few guns that might or might not work. For example, The story about the lights on the tanks fusing is just laughable and i am reminded of the axiom -poor planning leads to piss poor performance. His excuse seems to be that he didn’t have enough time. I did not think that was a worthy excuse for a general to make and this alone reduces his credibility as a professional. I cannot believe that they don’t have contingencies in place for such an event. The interviewer should have pressed harder on how the operation was viewed post hoc within the Indian army and by experts from other military forces. At that time I believe the British and the Israelis were helping on this and it would be very interesting to see what their counterinsurgency units thought of it and of the General.

You may very well be correct in stating that it is the soldier's duty to carry out the command of their respective authority, it is essentially the job they signed up for. But I would not be so willing to diminish a soldier's reputation and being to a meer pawn and cog in the machine. They are still human, still able to make decisions for themselves in what is clearly right and wrong. In the case of 1984, brar and those soldiers had every chance to give indra the proverbial middle finger and deny her goal in this ethnic cleansing of Sikh history and its people. Wether or not he performed his duties "efficiently" as a general is really missing the mark and strays away from the truly devestating impact his actions had on the lives of thousands of innocents.

@@tarsem344 what i might do or not in that position is not the subject of the discussion and nor should it be in an open forum such as this and so you should not be taking bets on what i might do or indeed anyone else in this forum. But, to address your points. 1 it is the legal duty of a soldier to carry out the instructions of his superiors and this is an unalterable principle on which chain of command in the armed forces functions. Nor should we seek to subvert this. Imagine an army where each individual member can decide whether to comply with a lawful order or not. An army is not a democratic institution where we take a vote on actions and the majority carry the day. 2 In a system of government (anything other than a military dictatorship) it is the obligation of the armed forces to carry out the instructions of the civilian government. India is a representative democracy and the government of the day was fairly and appropriately elected by democratic process etc and so there is no reason to suppose that the government was somehow improper. Nor, is there any reason to suppose that the instructions from the government, as outlined by the General, are anything but lawful instructions. Therefore, the army must comply. 3 To suggest that the individual army member should deliberately disobey the government and carry out some other actions of their own making (whist wearing the uniform) and thus challenging the civilian command is also know as a subversion or a coup. I would think and hope that you don't think that is a good idea. 4 There is no reason to suppose that members of the armed forces are not intelligent enough to be anything more than cogs in a machine and one would certainly hope that a 3-star general would be well above being a cog in the machine. I think this is a very important point, that he is not a mere cog in the machine but a highly decorated soldier with skills, a great deal of training, experience and on whom a huge amount of money has been spent. Furthermore, I would like to make it quite clear that i did not state or even imply such a notion. On the contrary, i make it apparent that any signed-up member of the armed forces and even more so the upper echelons of the institution, faced with a moral dilemma where the task in hand conflicts with his beliefs should be free and without reprisal to do the honorable thing and that is to resign his post or command, what you cannot do as a public service professional (of any profession) is pick and choose which jobs you want to do and which not. It may well be that, if he had felt conflicted, Brar may have thought of this. Indeed, such an action tantamount to offering up ones head for ones beliefs would be in the truest tradition of a sikh and relatable to the modern world. I would like to think we have come beyond the days where we think it is a good idea to set oneself on fire to make a point. Indeed, this would have been a good question to ask, the thoughts of the man upon being given the instructions rather than what the interviewer gives us which is a mere iteration of the chronology of events. I don't speak for him but maybe he did have these thoughts and no doubt knew that were he to resign or recuse himself from the order he would be replaced in an instant and by whom we don't know. All this would have been good interview material. accomplished his mission without a single death, what would his epitaph be then.

@@JaspreetSinghArtist Can you cite a credible source, literary or otherwise, which can shed light on : "they wanted to kill Sikh school of thought?" And most importantly, who is "they"? "Independence of Sikhs" is a dangerous term to use because nobody in the entire history tried to destroy Punjab other than Mughals and British (include their Indian stooges also). I'm from Kangra and the great raja Sansar Chand of Kangra sought help of Maharaja Ranjit singh ji to drive away mullahs, which he accepted gladly (with terms of course). But there are tales of the bonhomie and mutual respect they both enjoyed. Sikh school of thought draws it basics from Sanatan Vedic knowledge, Ek Omkaar Satnaam (Om is the real truth), Seva (serve Ishwar which resides in all of life), don't fall in to unnecessary rituals, no need for mutipuja, importance of Guru to achieve spiritualism, etc. I'm of the opinion that Gurunanak Dev Ji was so much pained by the loss of dharmic values in people that he had to ask them to revisit true dharma. In Babur Baani, he vividly describes the loss of values among people, misrule of kings, ignoring the needy and increasing lust for materialistic things. That is why he says, Babur invasion was act of Rabb, it was inevitable. Karam bore the fruit. I listen to Gurbaani a lot on morning radio and find it more meaningful than Jai MataDi type bhajans, simply because it mentions the true Bharat right from Shri Raam. So when I hear Sikhs mention with a thump of chest that they are not Hindu, it is both funny and extremly sad at the same time. There is no doubt in my mind that majority of what happenned in 84 is completely hidden from general people. But when JSB started distancing himself from this soil and its cultural values of which Sikh is a part, I presume that the Communist separatism had gotten to him. 2/3rd of Punjab went to Pakistan, then why not start Khalistan from there? (-istan word itself makes it clear the involvement of Pakistani ISI). Attacking Harmandar Sahib Ji is a crime but then isn't destroying its sanctity by amassaing war stores inside the shrine a crime too?

I agree.. Sikhism is a great faith and is integral for our unity in diversity. Among the followers of almost every religion, there exists a fringe element of people who wish to use violence to achieve their goals. And we must condemn them and make our governments bring them to justice no matter what their faith is. In this case, Bhindranwaala was the fringe element and the good Sikhs were fighting against him. He was such an evil person, he chose to put a lot of people and one of India's holiest of places in harms way. I don't see anyone else except him to blame for this incident. I personally think Sikhism has nothing to do with militancy. And like I said, we must condemn the fringe and violent people of any faith.

The moment Bindranwale and his men entered the holy place with guns and ammunitions', they lost all their credibility (doesn't matter saint or not). Yes, it would have been better if this incident could have been avoided but we all can learn from the past and avoid mistakes in the future instead of harboring "revenge".
