Fair Isle Knitting Charts | How to Read & Convert Charts | Tutorial for Beginners

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this tutorial I run through how to read a simple Fair Isle chart (for both flat knitting and circular knitting), which is aimed at beginners.
I'll then explain how to convert a flat knitting Fair Isle chart into a circular knitting chart, which is a method that can be used the other way too, to convert circular to flat knitting charts.
Basically, remember that when converting flat knitting to circular knitting, 'wrong side' rows (usually even numbered rows) are REVERSED - so knit stitches become purl stitches and purl stitches become knit stitches.
And when converting from circular knitting charts to flat knitting charts it's the same concept, with the even-numbered rows being reversed and becoming 'wrong side' rows (and purl and knit stitches being swapped.)
It's possible you could come across a Fair Isle chart that just shows a single unit or 'motif' that must be repeated across your work i.e. the chart doesn't show the full width of your knitting, but just shows the pattern section that is repeated across your work.
In this case, the concept is exactly the same, except you repeat row 1 of the chart over and over on your first knitted row, until you reach the end of that first row of knitting. This is repeated for all the rows of your knitting.
Your pattern, however, should spell this out for you and tell you how many times you will need to repeat the pattern chart design over each row :)
This tutorial can also be applied to some other types of color work chart too; not just Fair Isle charts.

Just wanted to let you know how much I like your how to knitting videos. I've never done fair isle knitting, in fact I've been intimidated by it but after watching the Fruity Knitting podcast they have inspired me to give it a go. I appreciate your simple and concise instructions.

Great tutorial! Thank you. Believe it or not my very first knitting project many many years ago was a pair of Fair Isle mittens and they came out great. Now I found a great pattern that's circular and your video is going to help me convert it to flat. However being a lefty, that throws a spanner into the works, so I have double conversions to do! I look forward to watching more of your videos.💜 (new subbie!)

Hi! Not quite sure what you mean, sorry. There should always be a repeating section in the chart...or the whole chart is the repeating section :)

@@RokoleeDIY hello❤ ive run into charts that don't have numbers along the side, that I'd like to use in a project. I'm still learning so excuse my ignorance..I thought if I could determine the multiple I could use any chart to apply to any project like knitting & crochet.

Hi! It's hard to say without seeing it but the same rules will apply no matter how the circular chart is orientated - so always read from where the numbers are, and always start at 1. It's weird that your chart has numbers on the left and right if it's a circular knitting chart, but with circular knitting you would normally work horizontally from right to left on every row.

What if it's a YO? On the 2nd row

  • @RokoleeDIY

Hi! A YO remains the same when converted; it's just the stitches either side of it that are changed. For instance, a k1, yo, k1 would become p1, yo, p1 when reversed/converted. Hope that helps :)

this woman does not explain that this is her pattern and that's the reason why she has the even rows with knit with pattern, and on the second row purl with first color . then the pattern (2nd Color) on the even rows.
