It's rare to find traditional songs that feature multiple female characters. When they do, they almost always seem to be of the "Cruel Sister" murder ballad variety. That's why I especially love this tale of sisterly love and support from the songbook My Song Is My Own. According to the book's notes, unmarried relationships often co-existed with marriage and were legally recognized in Scotland until the 13th century.
I took a heavy arranging hand on this one while trying to preserve the story arc - cutting verses, editing verse structure, and making significant alterations to the melody. There are a handful of renditions out there, but none sound quite like this one!

Gorgeous song, arrangement and performance ! :-)
What a beautiful guitar/ vocal performance - you have to play in England! There are so many folk clubs that you'd light up 👏
Lovely
Beautiful song and performance
Clicked on this on a whim having no idea who you were--and I have to say, that was *probably* the best decision I've made tonight. (Got to be the video's 100th Like, too, so there's that.) Going to check out the rest of your music now...

@@LindsayStraw i suppose Clifton Hicks would be the only one who would do a truly traditional version. I use to have a ton of cassette recordings of playing at different times and places, that i cannot find. But they're in my head still .....
❤
Beautifully sung and played! Interesting tuning, too, working well with the capo placement - just figuring it out! :) Subscribed!
Thought I already commented on this sweet rendition. Thank you. To get the birds to sing like that here, I 'd need to get out there about 4 AM.
Absolutely gorgeous performance. Happy to subscribe!!!

The birds like it, too!
Pretty sweet, where do you find the songs? Do you have certain artist you like? Or is it just popular tunes?

It's a mix! There are definitely some folks whose repertoire I really like and will sometimes draw from, plus there are some great collections of old field recordings and source singers that I'll dig into on occasion. This one actually came from a book and I took a pretty heavy editing hand to it, though.
Tasty song
