My trial crew re-routed those switchbacks heading down to Moran Basin in 2022. I bet you guys were so relieved after bushwacking on that ridge. I didn't expect to see that when I started watching, love to see it!

This is awesome! When we took those switchbacks down to Moran I remember thinking how fresh the trail seemed, and that it was odd as it’s not an overly popular area to hike into it seems. This all makes sense now. Thanks to you and your crew for working on the trails to make it possible to hike to these incredible places. Random question, did anyone from your trail crew lose a pair of gloves?

@@DannyJSchaefer More than likely someone did, we were out there for a couple of days but had to hightail it out of there due to 5 or 6 fires that popped up from a lightning storm that came though. We always tried to practice LNT, but sometimes things slip though the cracks. It was a bit of an odd part of trail to work, the road in was permanently gated a few years back to promote grizzly habitat, but Forest Service on KNF does a really great job keeping up access to the Cabinets given the challenges of staff and funding. I appreciate your content, keep enjoying public land bro!

Glad you guys made it out of there then. I’m heading back to the Cabinets again in the next couple of weeks to attempt this route again and hopefully finish the trek. The reason I asked is because I found some nice gloves, and ended up packing them out and still have them. Yeah I remember reading that the Moran Basin is known for being fairly dense with grizzly. Thanks for watching man.

My son has had similar experiences and prefers only backpacking with me. He says even though I am old and a bit broken down, being a disabled veteran, I hike circles around his buddies and am always up for adventure and not dissuaded by diversity. I do understand where your buddy is coming from too, though. I would have pressed on, but not everyone is built for it. I also wouldn't call this a fail, just a learning experience and a pretty cool one at that!

It was pretty disappointing for sure, but you're right - I'm itching to go back and finish it. Hopefully flies by, and you can get back out there as well. Turning back can be very disappointing, as many times your partner for the trek can be less committed/unpredictable for a variety of reasons. When I’m in these situations , I try to focus on and appreciate the intricacies and beauty I may have missed along the way. If nothing else - your treasured companion Lolly didn’t get eaten!! I hope you found a better trail on that ridge the way back. Chock it off as a learned experience. I’m fighting bile duct cancer without chemo - tried one tx and decided I’m out! I’m a fighter and have been active for decades- running when it wasn’t cool for females ( especially in a small Oregon country town - southern Clackamas County) and hiking for almost two decades- now hooked, always the explorer. I have lots of time to watch your content and I return every time because of the peaceful yet rugged experiences you bring. If you’re ever in Oregon try Paradise Park or the full loop on Mt Hood, tons of Native American history in Columbia River gorge - Indian pits and petroglyphs as well as Canyon Creek Meadows near Sisters, Or. and Steens Mountain/ Alvord Desert are spectacular - home of the mighty Kiger Mustangs. I use oregonhikers.org as it has wealth of info from outdoor veterans who have been there. AllTrails for the most current trip reports. I haven’t explored Steens yet, perhaps you can do a stints in that one. My goal is to get down there when I recover and get a nice wide shot of the horses to put on my living room wall! Thanks also for all of the great suggestions! Oregon is a state I’ve barely explored, and I’d love to get out there more next year. Before my friend said he’d tag along on this trip, I was actually intending to take Lolly on the Timberline Trail or the Eagle Cap Loop. Thankfully she didn’t get eaten this go around so maybe we’ll do that next year 😊 Definitely going to check out your Steens suggestion too. I really can’t thank you enough for your support and for always tuning back into the channel. I don’t post on here as much as I’d like to, so it’s much appreciated. I’ll pass this along to Tessa as well. She’s had some hip issues arise so we’re getting those straightened out so she can get back out there with me. Have a great holiday season!

Thats beautiful country. I got to experience weat of you this last summer up to Little Spar Lake, needless to say, im positive that whole area is ran over by bears, we were woken up to them at camp.

It sure is. I tackled Spar Peak last summer so I know exactly where you're talking about and I've been wanting to do Little Spar Lake. I agree with you as it seems to be a heavily dense area for the bears. Did they disturb you guys at all and did you see if they were grizzly or black bears? Thanks for watching by the way!

Hey Danny.....I'm the friend of HYOH-WU that hiked with him to Moran Basin, going the low route and bushwhacking our asses off. Really cool to see the area from your perspective up on the high route. Someone asked me about the campsite choices around Moran and I replied that the surroundings were not exactly "user friendly". I felt a little boxed in from the thick undergrowth and the steep sides. But it was a beautiful location and well worth the effort. Jesse woke me up around midnight because something was crashing around where we hung our bear bag. Whatever it was never came into camp so eventually we drifted back off to sleep. I'm saying all this to point out that I can understand your friend getting spooked and feeling like he just wanted to go home. He's just showing his lack of experience, that's all. Maybe next year you can head out with Jesse and me and we can do a nice big multi day, multi lake loop (and by then, maybe your friend will have his own gear and a few outings under his belt, who knows?). Hey Tom! Glad to have you along on the channel. I'm glad to know you can actually make it to Moran the way that you guys went. To continue the "High-Route" that I made, we were going to hike out of Moran Lake, intersect the trail for Saint Paul Lake, and then continue up to Libby Lakes for the next day. I'm assuming that's the way you guys got there - off of the Saint Paul Lake trail? I also have to guess that you guys stayed in the same camp that we did at Moran Lake. I would definitely agree that it is not very user friendly. It's brushy, and boxed in is a good way to describe it. We too, heard something thrashing around where we hung our food in the middle of the night there (I never mentioned that in the video). I always enjoy hearing others' experiences in the same places (especially remote ones) that I've been to. Yeah, I think this trip was a bit rugged for my friend.. and that's okay. He's a pretty 'techy' guy and hasn't expressed any interest in ever going back out and he will probably never buy his own gear. I'd definitely be up to plan a trip sometime though! @@DannyJSchaefer Yeah, Jess can explain our route better than me. He's born and raised Libby whereas, as far as Bird dogs go, I am a short haired Virginian. I'll be out again next year for sure. Same campsite, I think we were there on Aug 19th. A lot of smoke from forest fires on the 17th-21st or so.

As soon as I saw the title, it reminded me of that scary story I heard from David Paulides!!! He did a Missing 411 story in the Cabinet Mountains and just thinking about it, still gives me the willies!!! Your intro added to the creep factor!!! Love your drone work, it is subtle, but powerful. The fog/haze and overcast skies set the mood for sure!!! Great job doing the narration over the opening scene. My Mom is always the first to point out how much walking you do to retrieve your camera after your walk-by shots. I bet most people think you have a crew filming you. Again, it is a subtle, but powerful effect. I remember you mentioning to me your friend bailed on the trip. Unfortunate for sure! The route you planned sounded AMAZING!!! Question, did you get a new microphone? You sounded slightly different during the narration. Man, that was some THICK fog you two were hiking through!!! Holy shnikies!!! Just curious, what is Lolly carrying in her pack? I am guessing food, but is there anything else? We never would have guessed you were next to a lake, unless you told us. Wow, that fog was thick!!! I do not recall seeing anything like that in your previous videos. Wow, pretty incredible views once the fog lifted. The mountains surrounding that lake were gorgeous. I cannot believe you can get to Cliff Lake in under an hour. Wow! Hehehehe, love the spoon carving story! You should have told your buddy you started with a 2 foot 4x4. 😊 Was that the new pillow you mentioned in a previous video? It looks much bigger and more supportive. Was it better than your previous pillow? Holy crap!!! Bro, that was totally a squatch!!! 😊😊😊 I am confident you had your pow pow at the ready! If I had to guess, your buddy left his at home. ☹ I am pretty sure if I was able to sleep, it would have been with one eye open after that!!! Did Lolly react? That was a TPP (total pants pooper) for sure!!! Wow, wow, wow, that wolf footage was incredible. That was a lot to experience in the first 24 hours for sure!!! I know wolves serve a purpose, I am just not a big fan, especially if they are in my area. It is incredible you can see /experience all that just a mile into the trail. Your friend’s insights on wolves was informative. Oh man, now a bear!!! My Mom and I chuckled when we saw the look on your face when you said, “are you sure that is a black bear?” We know if Danny is concerned about something, it is something to be concerned about!!! I probably would have needed a diaper change!!! Hehehehehe, the look on both of your faces when you realized that the food you tied up was right next to you!!! I would definitely be on edge. I am planning on bringing one of my 10 mm G’s when I hit the trails. I have a 20, 29, and 40. It would be a lot of extra weight, but would give me some piece of mind… I hope! That was an ACTION packed 24 hours for sure! Now that the sun is peeking through, you can really start to see how beautiful that area is. That is some gorgeous landscape for sure!!! Love the 11:03 walk-by shot. As always, perfectly centered and well laid out!! Oh, we always love it when you are approaching a high point on a trail, right before the big reveal. You do a great job with those shots. I remember you had a bunch of them in the Sawtooth’s. If I recall correctly, there was a really awesome one before the devil’s staircase. The one at the 11:29 mark was beautiful, even with the overcast skies. Holy moly, that vertical ascent at the 11:32 mark looked completely vertical. How the heck did you 3 make it up that? Very impressive!!! The views from the peak were amazing!!! We paused the video, and we could see mountain ridges for as far as the eye could see!!! The map you inserted gave a great perspective on the route you planned on taking. Nice inclusion! Great shot at the 13:44 mark!!! That was breathtaking!!! You framed that perfectly between the two rock formations. SOOOO many pine trees!!! Love the shadows cast from the clouds. Man, that is beautiful. We had to pause the video there too! Was the shoreline and a part of Lake Moran near the bottom? If so, that was one heck of a descent you two needed to make! The backdrop at the 13:51 mark is amazing. Was that the ridgeline you just walked down? Just homerun after homerun with these ridgeline shots!!! You can see mountains for days at the 14:02 mark. I gotta believe some of those mountains are 50-100 miles away, or at least they look that far away. Holy Moly!!! The amount of beauty you guys encountered on the ridgeline walk is amazing!!! I think the 14:14 shot was the money shot looking down at those two lakes. My Mom and I said we could spend the afternoon just staring down at the water and all those pines. Ouch, that tumble you took looked a bit painful, especially wearing shorts! You definitely looked beat and soaked. That must not have been very comfortable. Time for a dip in the lake for sure! The debris you picked off your fanny pack says it all!!! 😊 I bet Lolly had fun though!!! Oh no, you dropped your phone!!! I remember when your phone decided to take a header off a cliff last season. You have great luck finding it when it decides to go on its own excursions. 😊 OMG, I think I need to change my vote for the money shot. The previous shot was insane, the shot at the 16:37 is super insane. The water is a cobalt blue and surrounded by beautiful pines and some rocky shoreline. As you look over the bowl, good Lord, the mountains behind it are breathtaking!!! You may have found paradise on earth my friend. You two sure earned the view!!! Man, that shot at the 17:29 mark was another winner!!! I love how you can see what looks like a grassy plain going up the side of the mountain with a clump of pines that look like an island, right before the rocky vertical. WOW, that looks awesome. I cannot tell you how many times we paused the video while watching it. Ohhhhhhhh, total gut punch with the news from your friend!!! You guys certainly endured a lot, but man oh man, the beautiful surroundings seem to make it worth it. I guess that is easy for me to say, sitting on my recliner watching the video. 😊 Moran Lake is certainly beautiful!!! I know it sounds crazy, but I would love to explore that patch of pines going up the side of the mountain. They look so densely packed. I would not be surprised if they had their own mini eco system in there. Did you at least get a chance to take a dip in the lake to freshen up? This is a next year trip for sure!!! The amount of beauty you encountered in the first two days was amazing!!! The route you came up with for this trek is a homerun. OUTSTANDING job planning this out. Wow, you guys covered a lot of ground in just two days and a ton of elevation too! That was impressive, considering how rough some of that terrain was. Hats off to you both!!! Did you guys see a single person? It always looks like you have the trail to yourselves!!! Ahh, love the closing still you used. Yep, that is the money shot my friend!!! You nailed it. It looks so breathtaking!!! This may not have been the trip you planned, but it was certainly a trip you will remember. You experienced more in the 2 days than most do on all their hikes combined. Nice Video well done it reminds me of some of my old Idaho videos from my old channel back when i lived in the Sawtooth range all those videos are on an external hard drive and i cannot get them off i were going reupload them to my mining channel but learned those old hard drives can fail.

i do not know i made the mistake of pulling my videos down lost all those subscribers and stored the video on a seagate external hard drive i learned these exteranl hard drives can go bad, i may be able to hire a pro to get them off if legacy box could pull them off it im all for it@@DannyJSchaefer

Pro Tip...There is no fish in Cliff Lake....lol! I only know this because I tried to fish it and when I told my Fishery biologist friend he told me. The lake Freezes Solid at winter. My friend Tom and I went into Moran Lakes this summer. We went the low route, we cut down by Copper Lake (because I get vertigo around heights) . I fell so many damn times and effed up my shoulder. We basically followed games trails and used OnX. There are big Fish in Moran Lakes. Ohhh...the wolves are probably eating the mountain goats that hang around Cliff Lake. Great video..I wanted to see what it looked like from way up there. One of these days we will have to do a trip.

I'm trying to figure out the route you took to get into Moran. Did you hop off the trail for St. Paul Lake then? Yeah we didn't see one mountain goat on the trip, and from what I've heard there are usually plenty to see. I think the wolves had them in hiding when we were there. And yes, absolutely!

@DannyJSchaefer Yeah we went down at Milwaukee Pass to Copper Lake and just bushwhacked and followed game trails and used Onx and Tom's inreach GPS. We knew it was gonna be tough, but damn....plus I came into this season way out of shape, so I was sucking pine needles for sure. 2024 will be a different story. will have to figure out a way to exchange #s.

Decided to check to see if Jesse was already among the commenters before sending this video to him. Should have known he would have already seen it 🤓. I was there in August for just a couple hours. No wolves, but as I lay in my hammock, herd some sort of large animal in the trees behind me. Grabbed my bear spray and went to investigate. Was quite relieved to see it was two mountain goats who were not relieved to see me. Awesome video! Seeing wolves, from afar, is a bucket list item for sure. I have been up to Cliff Lake before but it’s been several years. How was the road up? I remember it being pretty intense in a few places.

Thanks man! It was a pretty awesome experience seeing the wolves for sure. I truly felt like we were in the wild with the animal sightings. The road up was ROUGH, and long. There wasn't ever a part of the road where I felt unsafe, but it just seemed to take forever.
