Failed Messiahs From the Time of Jesus

Tons of wannabe messiahs had already come and gone by the time Jesus showed up, and even after Jesus a bunch more showed up and flopped as well.
Here's the rundown on the biggest names in almost/sort-of/fake-cheese messiahs.
If you like this kind of Internet and want to get behind this sort of thing existing, you can support the program at / tmbh
It's also cool if you'd rather not.

    I think it also helps to explain why Jesus never claimed or denied the title "Messiah" for himself as such. People had a very particular view of what the Messiah was supposed to be, and not everyone's particular view lined up very well with everyone else's particular view of what the Messiah was supposed to be. So some people had in mind exactly what Jesus was when they asked if he was the Messiah, other people had something else in mind.

    While outside of the scope of this video because of the time period it is also interesting to note characters like Simon Bar Kokhba who was a false Messiah from around a hundred years after Christ. A much more successful (than these mentioned false Messiahs) and extremely violent revolutionary who more closely fit the idea of a Political King coming to cast off the roman empire and restore an earthly kingdom as opposed to Christ who was a suffering servant whose kingdom was not of this world.

    Notice about Gamaliel that the text seems to imply that it was primarily the priests and Sadducees that wanted to squash the Way, but Gamaliel was in fact a Pharisee. As we read on multiple occasions in the gospel accounts the Sadducees were scripturally lost. Were the Sadducees expecting a messiah in the first place, or were the Pharisees (as represented by Gamaliel) the ones that were still hoping and longing for the messiah? This is I think something to keep in mind in interpreting the tension in Acts.

  • @gideonjudges7

    @gideonjudges7

    It is also important to note how the Pharisees [literally "pure ones"] and Sadducees [probably comes from "Zadok--ees", allied with the family of Zadok, the high priests] show up in the Gospels (especially Matthew)--major conflicts in Jesus's ministry came from the Pharisees, with one major exchange with the Sadducees. After Matthew 23 (Jesus's diatribe against the "Scribes, Pharisees, Hypocrites!"), no more direct conflict with the Pharisees. But the Sadducees were the party of the leadership--Caiaphas and his family were Saduccees. So, what is another way of reading what happened? The religious reform movement (the Pharisees) had doctrinal conflicts with Jesus, but some did eventually listen to Him (especially after His intense words in Jerusalem). The conflict with the Jerusalem leadership escalated, which led to the leadership party working toward His execution.

    Regarding the cheese metaphor: C. S. Lewis made a similar metaphor regarding butter and margarine! (Paraphrasing from memory, I think from an essay on distinguishing the real from the substitute.) During the war (WW2) we had shortages of lots of things, including milk, so we also had a shortage of butter; for which we had margarine as a substitute. And at first that was great, I couldn't tell the difference, and as far as I was concerned give me the margarine any day over the butter! But by the time the war ended, I could never again accept margarine for butter. Lewis wasn't talking about distinguishing false messiahs from the true one, but no doubt he'd agree with the application! {g}

    We call that trash cheese. Best use is for makin' Granny's cheese dip. Add milk, melt down the whole block, stir, stir, stir, then add Rotel. Serve with corn or tortilla chips. Also, that book by Josephus looks like a neat book! Adding to my list! 📚

    Grammatical question: Do you call that trash "cheese"? Or do you call that "trash cheese"? In my circles we call the dip you describe "Rotel dip" or simply "Rotel". When I was a teenager, I thought this was the only known use for a crock pot. Incidentally, you can read Josephus online www.josephus.org/works.htm

    I wouldnt make Josephus my first GO TO because biblical prophecy stands alome in a class by itself. 1) if you doubt God's prophecies pf selection of a small nation of Jews to show forth his Glory. Of you are an athiest then. Contemporary history wont help you lay the the groundwork on attacking the Bible. As the land of Israel today is spitting up more artifacts yearly confirming the Biblical narrative than at any other time in history Archaeology even further affirms what the Biblical auhtors unknowingly wrote about before the time of Herodotus, Pliny the Elder, Josephus and the other Greek and Roman historians. But more so than that only and idiot today would attempt to discount biblical prophecies made hundreds of years before their fulfilment as random chance let alone fantasy. Prophecy speaks of an all Knowing something with predictive powers that no man can attain unless their given from above.

    17:00 The other possibility you didn't mention is that Josephus messed up. That's not just a possibility, though, Josephus is not rock solid when it comes to dating. His accounting of historical events is good and supported, but for reasons, likely having to do with how he sourced and compiled his information, there are numerous places where he very obviously mixed up the dating of the events.

    So good. Even more reason to think that Jesus intentionally called himself the “Son of Man” from Daniel 7, rather than “Messiah/Christ” - which makes this scene make more sense: Matthew 26:63-65 [63] But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, “I adjure you by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” [64] Jesus said to him, *“You have said so.* But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” [65] Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has uttered blasphemy. What further witnesses do we need? You have now heard his blasphemy.

    Also consider that on Palm Sunday there were crowds of people singing praises to Jesus. But then they realize he's not the military-leader messiah that they were hoping for, and some of them lose interest. But there's also the situation that "Uh-oh, Rome has now arrested our latest messiah", and they'd be thinking about how things ended for all the recently failed messiahs. It'd be very prudent to put a lot of distance between yourself and this newest messiah, even if you weren't looking for a military-leader messiah!

    It's funny that you mention that "he's the one we've heard of". I assume you mean of the contemporaries but there are just a many spiritual leaders/prophets/guru etc, if we widen our scope beyond Judea. It doesn't seem to be an uncommon practice to have these people emerge but they often lack the spark, or the correct environmental conditions to set ablaze the population they preach to.
