FAILED CONCEPTS | Wrestling's Short Lived Ideas
WWE has thrown a lot of ideas at the wall over the years and, while some of these have succeeded in a big way, such as was the case with the first WrestleMania in 1985, the move towards an edgier product in the late 90’s, or going public at the turn of the millennium, not everything they’ve touched has turned to gold. No, on some occasions, these ideas haven’t managed to catch on, leading to some very notable, and sometimes costly, failures. But which of these ideas were the worst of all? Well, join us today as we take a deep dive into Failed Concepts: WWE’s Short-Lived Ideas.

I actually do remember a promo with Hulk Hogan and the war bonnet. He was talking about blasting through opponents, I believe is what he said. And the fuel tank? That was the source of his Hulkamania juice. He was going to drink from that in the middle of the match to refuel his Hulkamania, if you can believe that. So yeah, the war bonnet, the Hulkamania tank, the license plate...quite a long way to hide the bald spot.

The WCW relaunch was doomed from the get go. The match between Booker T and Buff Bagwell was in Seattle, WA, and WWF was scheduled to be in Atlanta, GA the following week. Atlanta was WCW's home base, so that match would have been much better received in Atlanta. The lack of WCW's top names (Sting, Goldberg, DDP, Hogan, Nash, Hall, Flair, etc. all sitting at home collecting their guaranteed contracts instead of working for WWF) joining WWE right after the purchase didn't help.

Remember when TNA tried to do fan-voted power rankings? Desmond Wolfe kept getting the top ranking, and when they tried holding another vote, Wolfe won again. Obviously the Powers That Be didn't want him to win, so they gave the fans what they wanted and put Wolfe in a title match, in which he was promptly beaten in around four minutes.

It would have been a cool idea if it was it's own show, completely separate from the rest of the company. Imagine once a week, getting an hour long show where you don't need to know any context or history, you can jump in at any point and it's just a more extreme, edgy show that gives jobbers and midcarders a platform to do crazy shit without needing to really do any promos or storytelling. Just have 5 matches between random members of the roster with big spots, backstage brawls, a more hard-core style and none of the big, larger than life theatrics. It would be pointless but fun and it'd give some underappreciated members of the roster something to do and to show their talents on.

As for the rankings, they sound like a cool idea in theory, but in practice they are a mess to incorporate in the storylines: it wasn't just Vince hectic booking, also in AEW they are only used when convenient and otherwise other means to select a #1 contender are picked to make the storylines progress.

Think the wildcard rule would have been cool if they had it so two wrestlers from a roster can turn up to the other brand when they want. You could have tag teams sneak across, lay out a rival tag team and have them feud. Comedy moments where Smackdown Wrestler A turns up on Raw and Smackdown Wrestler B turns up and they do the Spiderman meme, then team up to take on the other roster and set up a totally unseen feud.

Hulk said the only reason he wore the helmet was to sell them on the WWF store, it was a gimmick for more money.

Vince never gave ideas long enough, by the time it gets popular they scrapped it, this happened when Lex EXpress and such ideas. WCW relaunch would have been good and could have started a WWE vs WCW battle like Raw and Smackdown.

Only possible people that could possibly win a modern day brawl for all in my opinion are as followed; Brock Lesnar, Bobby Lashley, And Gable Steveson. I’m not too certain who could legitimately win a tournament such as that due to the information we have about CTE and brain injuries so it’s just a better idea to stay faaaaaaaar away from anything such as a “shoot fight” tournament.

The fact that mexicans were able to see Mr. Porky on the WWE is something special for Mexican wrestling; I mean everybody on Mexico loves him

Something is obviously missing. I remember when Sunday night heat premiered, it was an amazing continuation of the story line. The characters had a lil freedom over their characters and it showed! Now the writing and story lines are just weak!
