Great video. That’s one of my favorite crabs. Interesting lifecycle, especially that pre-mating grasping ritual. On the East Coast we have blue crabs, but you can’t eat them really, because they have a high concentration of dioxins and PCBs that pollute the estuaries of major rivers.

I lived in Maryland in the mid 1980s, and you could eat them then. They are delicious.

Scary looking as any sci-fi movie could make including Ray Harryhausen. The name conjures up dank stone chambers and bar crushing claws. She is protecting her young as millions scurry around like spiders pinching and drawing blood. They feed on human victims, audio from the sounds of crabs feeding on a seal on Planet Earth. Real sounds even better than horns and such in the Verne movie.

I think most of us who tried dungennes crab will admit they are tasty, but the if you have seen and handled live dungenness or any other crab you may have felt that there is just something not right about killing and eating them. I always see how they struggle to survive, then they grab your hand with their small legs (the claw should be tied unless you want to lose a finger) it feels like a human hand. And the bigger they are the worse I feel about eating it. It’s like it survived long enough to reach that large size. Like I am destroying God’s work or something.
