    You dont need that many pipes for mining uranium. The miners can distribute the liquid to the other miners

    True enough, but one advantage to a setup like this, is that if you are using the mod that marks Miners for Deconstruction, then you won't have to keep fixing the connections. Technically, this setup would also use less power and miners. And Sulfuric acid for that matter.

    Really just echoing so many other comments - nuclear has always been kind of intimidating but just like everything else in the game, you make it approachable and easy to get going! Thanks for all the great tutorials! It's awesome to know that if I can't figure it out in the wiki but you have a video on it then I can be sure to can get it working. "working and working efficiently are two different things" totally agreed and as a n00b, just getting it working first is usually the hardest (and most fun) part of this game.

    Best end way to tell if your setup doesn't work as intended... Pipes don't reach 500+ because they are too long (can double them up and run them side by side for longer runs) and... The turbines aren't running. If they aren't, either have too many, or something is up!

    8:55 To solve the problem with backing up, feed the Kovarex with a split belt, one side U-235 and one side U-238. Use a filter splitter on the input to make the split belt. Loop the Kovarex output back to the beginning and feed it back onto the split input belt. The important part is that feeding the split belt needs to be prioritized in a specific way to keep it from backing up. U-235 from the mines must be prioritized over U-235 from the Kovarex, and U-238 from the Kovarex must be prioritized over U-238 from the mines. I also have my fuel cell reprocessing here, and feed its U-238 output to the split belt after the Kovarex but before the mines. The input split belt is also your output to fuel cell production. Once the system fills up, the Kovarex will pull what it needs and let the rest pass through to production. You can pull from wither side to your heart's content.

Turns out, I just had to get rid of the Solar panels in the smaller mines and assembly plants. They were outproducing the turbines to the point that that the turbines didn't need to run. Once I removed them. The turbines cranked as desired.

    one thing to add is that you don't need kovarex at all. 1 centrefuge, even at the 0.7% for 235, can fuel one nuclear reactor. So you just need 4 of them for 4 nuclear reactors. Kovarex is if you want 235 for other crafts. It's still worth having extra centrefuges and stockpiling 235 for when you get Kovarex, but it isnt needed or even useful for nuclear power.

I have two nuclear reactors touching on one side (3 connections) with heat pipes running to 38 heat exchangers and 75 steam turbines. This all produces 437 MWs! The wiki said max for 2 reactors should be: 2 reactors for 16 heat exchangers and 28 turbines for a max power total of 160 MWs. Both my reactors temperatures are stable not decreasing at 800 C and the coolest heat exchanger is at 601 C all stable not decreasing. What am I missing here?

    The only "weakness" of coal and nuclear power, is the fuel, at some point, it will run out. OF COURSE, if you use oil based fuel for the steam, it's infinite, but oil is used for sooo much else. Solar is infinite, BUT requires a *LOT* more space, for both solar panels and accumulators I normally focus on solar power asap, building a huge solar farm in one part of the map

    kovarex is not needed for a 2x2 reactor build. and certainly not a 1 or 1x2 build. if you have a 100 miners working uranium and you have productivity modules in the centrifuge and uranium cell factory you can easily get early nuclear, but steam storage becomes more important at that stage, if you have nuclear (that overproduces) and solar you can stop building accumulators since steam storage is waaaaaay more efficient like 200x as efficient. only build nuclear if your factory needs more than 60 MW and then 1x2 nuclear if your factory needs more than 80 MW since uranium is so abundant. kovarex is more mid to late game

    So long story short, when you unlock Kovarex enrichment, your dumping the 238 out of the centrifuge and then dumping it right back in to "sift" through it again? EDIT: No, wait, thats wrong...Once I get 40 of the rarer "235" from regular processing, I can put it in the centrifuge and basically turn 3 "238" into one "235". Hmm.

  • @fissionphoenix4995

    @fissionphoenix4995

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi former nuclear reactor operator here. 235 and 238 are two different "isotopes" of uranium, meaning they have different amounts of neutrons but both still have 92 protons. Any element on the periodic table can have more or less neutrons than "normal" and the optimal ratio of protons to neutrons varies as the atom gets bigger. Nuclear force binds protons and neutrons together and greatly overcomes the magnetic force of all the positive charges of protons pushing away from each other. Radiation happens when an isotope of any atom is "unstable" such that the ratio of protons to neutrons is too high or too low. An unstable atom can change from one type to another because of quantum processes I don't really understand allows protons to sometimes turn into neutrons and vice versa. An unstable atom can alternatively eject a proton or neutron from itself entirely, and that can be assumed to be what happens in kovarex. Using the natural radioactivity of uranium (and probably other elements but factorio only shows the 2 isotopes) Some of U-235 are used as a catalyst to cause some U-238 to eject some neutrons to become U-235. I can't speak to how realistic this is to actual enrichment since I mostly dealt with operating the reactor with the already enriched fuel, but understanding more than average with regards to nuclear physics allows me to speculate this is a relatively scientifically feasible process. U-235 is easier to cause to fission entirely than U-238 is, depending on the reactor design. I think future reactor designs may allow for direct use of U-238 as fuel but we'll have to see where research takes us.

  • @pershop4950

    @pershop4950

    You're right in thinking of it as using up the 238, but I think of it in terms of the 325, because there's so many 328 anyway. You're turning 40 of the 325 into 41 of the 325 for each cycle. So you always get one more than you had. Do it enough times, and you'll have enough to feed one centrifuge (you already had enough by getting 40, but the game would like to put 80 or more into the building as a preparation). Do it even more , and you can feed two centrifuges. More and more and more, and then you reach a point where you can spare some to make the nuclear fuel cells.
