Facing "Mungiki" - Pete Ondeng'
The dust was just settling after the 2007 post election violence and ethnic tensions were still high. Pete was driving along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway when his car broke down. He talks about his nerve-racking experience coming face to face with 4 young men who he feared to be the dreaded 'Mungiki'. #Engage28 #ShiftHappens #EngageAtFive

I was the one with dreadlocks. It was at kinungi where we fixed that old pajero KAJ. I remember it very well, oct. 2008.

Pete tell me this is true??
First, this is the best engage talk I have seen. Second, there are two lessons I have learnt here: 1. Bad experiences make great stories. 2. Never judge people too soon without knowing them first.

@@deanking6105 Agreed Jalango's hands down, its the one that introduced me to Engage talks
I went to a garage full of Luo mechs and trust me, you feel the difference in the energy N vybe. But they ended up being honest than my mech. Since then I go there all the time. Nice guys despite calling me okuyu and jaka something I don't know. I got pissed drunk in Homabay and Migori speaking kikuyu. But having dealt with misconceptions from my own tribesmen coz of being Pan Afro, I felt better in luo land dancing to nyadundo. What am I saying? You could be more safer in what you perceive as "foreign territory" than you are with " your people" in "your territory"

True...am surprised..indeed it's not good to judge someone you dont know based on stereotypes n what hv you..this story has touched me!!
Never judge a book by it's cover. One Kenya one people. Let's eradicate tribalism and stereotyping. Thanks for sharing your story Pete.
People were laughing, but I was crying coz of how we are quick to judge people! May the LORD help us ALL!!

It was not a quick judgement little girl. Just a week before people like him were being butchered by people like the young men who had dreadlocks on live TV with the police and pressman watching. It was not an unfounded fear cos the issue that sparked the whole violence had not been resolved. Over 2,000 people were displaced from their homes and others burnt in churches. Luos like Pete were being circumcised alive and left to die. Faith in humanity was lost. He was justified in his fears but God wanted to teach him another lesson. You young people speak carelessly on social media sparking tribal animosity without knowing the demon you are arousing.
I keep saying,no matter how broken the world is,there are still lotsa good people left
Bless you Pete. We really need to embrace each other without stereotyping. We really love each other until the politicians awaken the demon of ethnicism.
This has to be the funniest engage I've ever watched
Enyewe luopeans...the eloquence! not one 'ummm' in the entire narration. The lesson here was very important too, for Kenya & Kenyans particularly.

Not luopeans, am in a club that trains pple how to talk eloquently without those "uuh, uums" and I've seen far better speakers than Peter, although he's done a good job, it takes training and a good grasp of English grammar, written or spoken.

This is a must watch.. Main lesson learned is that never judge a person by their appearance.. Thank you so much Pete
This has got to be one of the best engage talks I have watched! I mean this stories are life transforming. Whoever, came up with this brilliant idea, God bless you.
Beautiful narration, I am watching it for the nth time now. A sad reminder that of how united Kenyans are, but only remember our tribes at the ballot.
Speaking in English is one thing, but being fluent enough to make someone glued to a story to the point of cracking up is another thing...
Wow! This is one humorous captivating story. I'm curious if Pete is a Toastmaster. Brilliant!
Great orator wow with a great deep voice .such a beautiful one i loved and i laughed loudly👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾kudos

This guy is the real duo I can’t get tired of listening to him talk Hapo kwa ni pastor has killed me 😅😅😅
This was very deep. Despite realizing that he obviously lived to tell the story, it was a pleasant relief that it turned out so well.
This was so inspiring. May God truly remove our implicit biases and help us to see others as he sees them. Thank you Pete Ondeng' I remember your sisters singing blessed us in school.

Wow! Thank you Pete for reminding us (me) not to judge people by their outward appearance. Apart from the serious lesson, I must say (like others have noted), have a deep sense of humor -- I laughed out loud while watching.
Yeeeey I finally get to see Pete Ondeng. Pete I read your - The Bottom Line - articles in Character Magazine (decades ago - LOL). They were so refreshing. And now facing mungiki? You are a hilarious narrator. Kudos
I will sue this pastor for cracking my ribs😂😂😂...deep story this one, astonishingly enlightening tale...
Nicely told, our prejudices are broken down in the most profound ways.

Hahaha that was superbly delivered, vividly painted. Great lessons in there!
Pete Ondeng, thanks for talk show, you're such a good orator. Much regards to the 'Engage Talk' that invited you and gave you a platform. Pete, you were the reason I had subscribed to 'Character' magazine, decades ago, at a time when I was jobless and hustling in the city just after college. How I missed you write-ups, esp when the mazagine stopped publishing. I didn't know you are this young. I even wonder, now, how old were you then? At what age did you started writing, or were you still in college those days? Are you still in journalism? And if so where? Anyways big up man, you are hilarious.
The story has enhance my love for my brothers from My Kenya
This story teaches us not to stereotype people without getting to know them, let's embrace each other with love,.
Mungiki sio mchezo ,that was a miracle am telling you, it doesn't happen to many,..
This story is told so nicely. Lesson learnt.
