Facing It Together: The Male Survivors of Domestic Abuse | Loose Men

Ойын-сауық

Earlier this year Loose Women launched a groundbreaking domestic abuse campaign called 'Facing It Together'. As well as shining a light on the stories of female survivors, male charities told us they’d had an 80% increase in calls to their helplines directly after our campaign launch. And with one in seven men experiencing abuse in their lifetime, it's important that Loose Men is involved. Vernon recently sat down with two survivors whose lives were made hell by the women they were married to, to find out how they were able to move on.

We have a huge amount of evidence proving the rise in injustice in the courts against men who suffer abuse, it ruins mens lives and our support for men in UK has found maladministration and malpractice in law at many levels responsible for not many men coming forwards and instead committing suicide. Of the known cases we have heard of and seen out of 100 men 8 commit suicide before getting the support necessary, with approximately 20/40 becoming homeless and becoming self abusive due to the mental health not being treated. Full whitepaper will be published August 28th 2024.

A permanent Loose Men show would be so helpful to all men. Men don't talk about these types of topics between themselves. They don't get emotional with each other. They are more likely to go out with friends to joke and talk about sport. Women talk to each other in a much more emotional and personal way. There is so much shame attached to all domestic abuse.

In my experience it is a popular misconception that all women talk to each other or even most. Think this stems from the one sided men are meant to be stronger therefore, thry don't talk. That's not true either. Some women and men talk and some really don't.

I agree, that there should be a permanent Loose Men programme. I’m also a survivor of domestic abuse, from my parent’s relationship and marriage of 4yrs, had a very difficult and painful divorce/custody/visitation, with 22yrs of separation from a malignant narcissistic mother, whom I haven’t seen for 17+ years no contact whatsoever. We are only now going through the financial settlement process, which she is also making difficult.

I was in a domestic abuse relationship for 7 years and for me looking back it wasnt the violence or the name calling...it was the negative and suffocating atmosphere and the environment that really broke me down. The walking on egg shells and the isolation. The relationship ended 6 years ago now but the scars, void inside and my now lack of confidence, self worth and self esteem will always be with me like a internal dark cloud i cant shake off.

Remember Joey (Friends) with Katie (?) She ridiculed him, "what little me?" while punching him "playfully" on the arm and chest. He ended up padding himself with six jumpers! Though it was dealt with in a comic way it really got the point across, that men also have the right to have their noes taken seriously, it's not something to joke about.

They said ‘he encouraged it’ when a man is the victim but made a sad video and campaign when a woman was the victim.. crazy the difference in reaction. No mention of the increase of male victims coming forward from baby reindeer either…

Both shows have validity, but in a day and age where 2 men are killing themselves every minute and suicide rates in men are 4 times higher than women, a show that supports men's issues is much needed. I just hope women don't laugh it off as unneeded. It is needed. We struggle too.

Its good that the domestic abuse on men is more being put out there now days, I was attacked lots of times by the mother of my children I did not defend myself due to being brought up in believing men should not attack woman so I just hide it away due to shame, sadly even when a man gets away from a domestic abuse relationship where a children are involved it is far to easy with the way the system and courts are that the domestic abuse still continues though mother blocking children of from contact with there dads, I am depressed most the time thinking of my children and have nightmares a lot even panic attacks at times due to this.

This sounds all well and good but it’s not just the part about speaking up - over 18 months ago my emotionally abusive ex wife was caught having an affair, and she then proceeded to play victim - accusing me of all sorts and fully got away with it. The reason? Not ONCE did the authorities hear me out. Not once. She drained my bank accounts, She left, cried wolf, disappeared with my son, and no one would tell me nothing until it was time to pay child support - and then spousal support. I spoke to the charities but unless I had thousands to hire a barrister and go to court, it was a “that’s how it works”

The American National Family Violence Survey analyzed the responses of 6,002 participants (2) and the results indicated that in the year prior to the survey at least 12.4% of women reported that they perpetuated violent acts toward their husbands, while only 11.6% of the husbands admitted engaging in physical aggression toward their wives. This has similarly been mirrored in severe violence investigations, where the self-reporting percentage of women who committed severe violent acts was 4.8% while for men it was 3.4%

It's quite sad to witness people being lumped together in different categories. Sadly, that's the world we live in. However, the irony is that we exist in a patriarchal society where men are saying the odds are against them while they're , at large, also the ones creating the laws and shaping our society. Unfortunately, there are still many countries in the world where women are yet to gain rights. Plenty of them are financially, emotionally, and physically dependent on their partners, many of whom treat them terribly and act entitled (as in the case of the ex-minister of Kazakhstan who murdered his wife and tried to destroy the evidence), so I would have to say the male disadvantage boils down to what society people are from and how the judicial system in each of those countries work, I suppose. However, in my opinion, there are only the abused. There's no denying that a long-term commitment is risky, regardless of what gender people in a commitment are. Always, always a risk.
