Faceting a North Carolina ruby!

Come hang out with me while I facet an incredible ruby I mined a few weeks ago at Propst Farm, NC.
If you want to watch the ruby & sapphire mining process as well, check out the videos below!👇🏻
Part 1:
• A day of ruby & sapphi...
Part 2:
• A day of North Carolin...
The ruby in this video is one of the coolest, most characteristic North Carolina gems I’ve seen. If you’d like to check out all the lovely, ethically made gemstones & jewelry I have available now, check out my website linked below!

(Yes, the gem in this video is available! Or at least it was when this was posted...)
If you’d like to take a deeper dive into what I do, feel free to check out my Intro to Rockhounding course. I spill all the tips and tricks that have led me to my best finds.

I hope you enjoyed this look into my faceting process! It is truly my favorite craft in the world, and I’m so excited that I’m finally able to share some long-form content on it. I know if I saw a video like this years ago, I would’ve been HOOKED!
Whether this video ignites a new passion in you or just keeps you entertained on a lunch break, I hope you had fun watching.
Let me know your thoughts & what you’d like to see next in the comments! 🥰

hii i love your cuts and your gems!!! i follow you on instagram from almost 1 year and if I decided to approach the world of precious stones it is also thanks to your videos. every time someone tells me it's impossible to find rubies, sapphires or anything else, I show them your videos. I didn't think I'd find you here on KZread too and I'm very pleased. when I finally buy my cutting/polishing machine I will show you my first creations!!! thank you very much

That is a very nice use of the lap, I’ve heard ruby is very “hard” to cut & facet, great work 👍

I've got a decent amount of raw corundum from propst, makes me wonder what some of it would look like facetted

That’s awesome!! I don’t usually custom cut gems for people, but if you’d be interested in trading some rough material I’d be happy to send back a cut piece or two :)

That is so awesome!!! William Holland is the best. Taking the leap from cabbing to faceting is incredible too ☺️

When it is not transparent the whole point of faceting is gone. But of course you can still do it even if the whole point of it is gone..

I learned how to facet at William Holland in Georgia! Some local universities offer programs, but I’d recommend looking for a smaller school of lapidary arts near you :)

Blacklight will tell if it's a sapphire or a ruby. But I'm pretty sure it a ruby .the pink you see is the inclusions and the polishing marks

You’re probably right according to the technical definition! It’s not true red, but it’s about as close as it gets for NC gems
