FACEOFF: Suno v3 and Sonauto

Ғылым және технология

Here it is. A side by side, “apples to apples” comparison between Suno v3 and Sonauto AI music generators.
suno.ai
sonauto.ai
In my last video there were a lot of comments giving Sonauto a hard time, saying it was nowhere near Suno, etc. and I simply couldn’t disagree more, and I’m here to show you why.
NO AI music generation is perfect, and they all can produce some real YUCK, but both of these services are capable of creating amazing music, and if you’re TRULY interested in a fair comparison, I invite you to put on a set of headphones, and enjoy.
My position is that Sonauto is a real competitor - not that it’s better - but in some cases, I feel it definitely IS - Just as Suno is better than Sonauto at some.
I’m just asking folks not to be so reactionary to new tech that goes up against the “big guys / favorites.”
You may not love every piece we showcase, or every style, but the point is to show you that Sonauto is extremely capable, and deserves your attention if you’d like to create AI music with no subscription fees - for now.

📔 ABOUT BOB DOYLE
We live in a freaking crazy time, don’t we?
Artificial Intelligence has exploded into the mainstream, and reactions are varied, to say the least. But for me? I’m all on board! As a creative, today’s technology allows me to take the skillsets I’ve acquired over a lifetime and use them like never before. Instead of feeling threatened by how rapidly seems to be taking of people’s jobs, I see the technology as a way to foster creativity in far more people than are currently tapping into their creative potential. I believe we are here as humans to create. And for me, it’s not an option. If I’m not creating something, I’m dying inside. So Bob Doyle Media is a showcase of my various outlets of creativity, and you’ll see that AI plays a big role in it. From virtual photoshoots and art and animation creation, all the way to voice cloning and face replacement… I play with all of it, and this is where I share it. If you’d like to work together, please reach out. I’d love to connect and talk about how I can contribute to your project.

I'm actually most impressed with sonautos ability to separate stems FREE (bye bye paid service, if you got one). To any song. You can upload your own. Make a song in Suno and use sonauto. And actually sonautos ability to add laughter is cool. It's definitely not on the same level as Suno considering the music, but there really are some cool stuff in there. Competition is good, it makes other companies to fight for consumers, us.

@@AiandMusic too bad it's not good at instrumentals or sound effects either. Suno is fantastic for both of those and as a game dev it's what I use most. I'll give it props for having laughter, as none of the others have that (though I'm betting Suno can be prompted for it too in some way). So it's definitely got something others don't, but it's lacking everywhere else. The voices are not good either, scratchy sounding and just very synthetic sounding.

I'm a big Suno fan boy, like most of seemnto be, but competition is good! Sonauto has a feature that Suno doesn't: stem separation. That's a big deal, if you don't have FL Studio or similar with this feature. Quality isn't the dame as Suno, it definitely "understands" music better, how it flows etc. BUT I actually like how sonauto added laughing track. That could be used to make something else than music though. I dunno, I wouldn't diss a free service. But if I would rate these two right services now, it would be something like sonauto 5 - Suno 9. Suno community is also great. And the team listens to people. Hope this is also the same for sonauto.

Tried Sonauto and I like the feelings the "singers" communicates. Suno "singers" feels a little bit mainstream old AM radio on low level inside the car, that I also indeed like. So both fills a purpose. If, its all about attention and how you want your "track" to grab the listener. Sonauto wins that battle, IMHO. Listening to 100 tracks of each, Suno tracks kind of fades into the misty oblivion, after a while. While some Sonotracks might be remembered for the out-of-the-box originality.

I'm not sure anyone doesn't see the potential for Sonauto, but when you are holding it up to Suno v3 and talk like they are the same quality it just doesn't seem like a genuine/fair comparison. I think a better comparison would be Sonauto vs Suno v1 because I don't think it's even quite where Suno v2 was. I've been playing with Sonauto based on your recommendation and some of it's issues in my opinion are that the music generation itself isn't quite there but bigger issues are that vocally the singing struggles with the verses of the song sounding more like sing talking that struggles with matching the rhythm and notes of the song and then all of a sudden gets on point when the chorus hits. The music and vocal are also off with the vocals dominating the music. I can definitely see the potential, there are things I can hear in the choruses where they seem to be experimenting with vocal "tricks" such as vibrato. Definitely worth keeping an eye on as they develop and get better.(which I'm guessing is what you're trying to express here more so than that this is on equal footing with Suno v3.) It's still early days for them and this is the worst Sonauto will ever be.

If it supplied the midi for the tracks it would be awesome. I've download the stems for one and it sounds like they use something like RipX to separate the stem out, so they show the same artifacts (but worse than ripx) which is odd since they've created them and I would have thought the tracks would be additive to produce the song and so the stems would be perfect. Still workable though.

I am preparing an album release with suno, and I tried all the 15 main songs that I have plus some side projects since seeing the previous video on sonauto, I will agree that sonauto is more creative, but this can go either ways, and mostly it goes quite wild with the ideas, if you are letting the ai dictate the style that's ok, but for example the songs that I have in my album are what I had in mind from years ago, and I managed to really land the style I wanted, sonauto pretty much does whatever it wants, and, one thing for sure, I have many songs that where perfectly mixed and streaming ready from suno, and this who had issues where easy to adjust, but I don't hear that quality with sunoauto across the board, of course this is the worst that this tech will be, but for now I'm sticking with suno

Replay is entirely different, and I would absolutely not recommend it. Replay is a voice changing app that promotes using real people's voices without their permission. I personally find it unethical, but even ignoring that, all it does is change voices, it doesn't generate music. (Replay is the reason KZread is flooded with videos labeled "AI song" / "AI cover" that are 99% human-made and 1% voice-changed AI, and it's skewing public perception of what actual AI music is, like with Suno Chirp.)

Sonauto can give some good results (and it's free) with the right prompting. As with most things, it's a case of seeing what works, and because it is free, you do have the luxury of testing. having said that I have one or two Suno songs that (legitimately) give me a tingle up the spine when the singer's voice rises to match the change in the song. I'm tempted to add a link, but not sure it's the right thing to do. :) I love Suno, but will be messing with Sonauto a lot more... especially with the text-to-speech like the "standup" you did in the video.

Now Sonauto I believe has amazing potential if the just fix that inpanting to get it to work better and they tweak the vocals so they don't sound so simplistic and generic at times, but what i really want to say is (sound so white). I think it has the potential to absolutely climb right over Suno into the first spot and it's FREE and we keep 100 of the commercial use. I mean come on! I read yesterday on Discord that at some point we'll be able to upload music to have the Ai use it as a template of the style of music that we want it to build. I was recently introduced to you via "the algorithm" (assuming) and I'm glad your channel popped up in my feed. I also agree with your points. And like you knew that Sonauto exceeded Suno, instantly. So After you introduced us to Sonauto, I had it create a power ballad in the style of a renowned female pop singer Barbra Streisand. I was amazed by the AI's ability to capture her iconic vocal techniques, such as phrasing, octave jumps, and dynamic range. Why I chose Barbra, she is widely regarded as one of the greatest female pop vocalists of the modern era. During her prime years in the 1960s-1970s, she achieved unparalleled success and acclaim. Few artists have matched the unique combination of vocal prowess, versatility, and prestigious accolades that she amassed, including becoming the youngest person to achieve the coveted EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) status. (Ponder that for a moment, at the age most artist are trying to cultivate any type of following and a sustainable fan base for a long career. She had not only had projects in every aspect of the entertainment industry but won the most coveted awards right out the gate! Extraordinary.) According to Billboard and other major music publications, Streisand has set numerous historic records over the course of her legendary career. She has had the most #1 singles (11) and top 10 hits (34) on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of any female artist, trailing only The Beatles. On the Billboard 200 album chart, she has the most #1 albums (11) and top 10 albums (53) by a female artist, again behind only The Beatles and Jay-Z in the overall rankings. Streisand is also one of only two artists, along with Frank Sinatra, to have recorded #1 albums in six consecutive decades. And with over 150 million records sold worldwide, she is considered one of the best-selling music artists of all time. While her voice has naturally evolved over time, as is the case for any long-lasting career, her influence and legacy continue to inspire today's artists. The AI's impressive recreation of her signature sound is a testament to her enduring impact on the industry.

It still bears watching because you get a whooping 4 clips. Suno is my candy in a candy store. Also, those wake up songs are fighting words! 😂

I think for ALL of these music generation systems, they need to start training them on multi-track data so it can start to "understand" how tracks really fit together. And offering the "stems", or individual instruments and vocal tracks for their users would be a MAJOR step forward for music production.

@@BobDoyleMedia It appears to be using the Demucs engine - which really just uses some EQ tricks to separate vocals from a track (as well as Bass, Drums and everything else/Other). It's not bad for what it is but it's not nearly the same thing as having actual clean stems for all of the instruments in the arrangement. Agree with the others on this - if someone is able to work it out, it'll be a game changer for those of us who want to get their creations into a DAW to properly edit. Ps. Thanks Bob, your recent videos helped me discover Suno! As an amateur music producer, I've had a lot of fun playing around with it - The quality is not really there yet to be meaningfully useful imo but if the tech improves at the same rate as AI imagery, it's going to be exciting to see where we are in 12 months time.

That doesn't mean it's the best thing ever, or ready for professional release. it means I'm inspired in the moment by what I'm hearing the tech do. It's all really quite miraculous, and I appreciate aspects of both platforms and while Suno is clearly more polished, I think that statements like "make my ears bleed" is just a bit exaggerative. I stand by my opinions that both have merit, and both are capable of "making ears bleed" at times.

Dear Bob, Good day! I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for your KZread channel. Your positive presentation and unique perspective have truly captivated me. I find your ability to discuss both the positives and negatives of various topics to be candid, transparent, and incredibly useful. Your channel is a haven of creativity, constantly inspiring me to think outside the box. I must say, I am thoroughly entertained by the "skeletons" piece you recently shared. It's thought-provoking and pushes the boundaries of what can be created. And that jokes session? Wow! It had me laughing out loud! I also wanted to mention how fascinated I am by your past posts about getting layers and working on each one. It's like sculpting, where skill is needed to create something truly remarkable. I see it as a form of transcribing, but with the added elements of curating and polishing the final product. The fact that the sonic achievements can vary depending on the artist's resources is simply wonderful. I apologize if I'm rattling on, but I just wanted to send my sincere appreciation and gratitude for your work on this channel. Sonauto does not really compare to v3 Suno, I done extensive comparisons between the two and found it's not even close. Sonauto fails to understand half the prompts that Suno aces every time. In addition, Sonauto is very choppy still and has a lot more problems with longer generations. It's a decent alternative that's entirely free sure....but it's not even close in capabilities. It will get there in time I'm sure, but it has a long way to go.

I think it's a bit strange to compare two music generators and start with spoken word, followed by acapalla. You're grading fish on their ability to fly here. And even within those tests you showed, I much prefer Suno's acapella generation to Sonauto's. And honestly, same with the others you showed. I get that you really like Sonauto more, and that's great. But between your examples, and my own tests with it (which are rife with attention failures, significantly more often than Suno, in addition to being less appealing sonically), I'm just not impressed. It *is* the closest competitor to Suno I've ever seen, which is cool, but it's just not there yet.

Very interesting video, but I'm sorry dude. I don't get it. I can see you really enjoying what you are hearing, but to me the trickery is obvious and unsatisfying. Maybe I've just heard and seen too much AI crap, but all of this stuff is immediately fake sounding, Some clues are in the way the audio is processed, for sure. I'm using my reference headphones, and I'm hearing tons of artefacts and ringing. But aside from that there are other clues, which are lie in the autotuning, and in the lack of vocal consistency. The singer can sound different on different lines, enunciates in a very artificial way, and the AI misses loads of expressive moments that singers would intuitively get. Aside from the singing, there's an approximation in the instrumental arrangement that is only superficially correct. Instruments appear and disappear in a most unnatural and obviously fake way. Guitars don't sound like any guitar I've heard, and the brass parts are straight lifts from old Glen Miller songs that immediately give away the "training" source, but the AI seems happy to mix and match tones from different eras, a bit like sampling I suppose? The arrangements are weird also. What you obviously enjoyed as a lift at 14:00 is a great example. The little fall before the rise is absolutely "right" for the moment, but it is obtained of course again from the training material. But the lift itself shows only a surface level appreciation of what the real thing would do - the AI adds white noise to simulate overdriven guitars; there's no bass impact to speak of; all the "instruments" mash into one another. I'm very aware that what I'm hearing is like a bad photocopy, both sonically and musically. I think what's happening here is that AI song making is so new that most people aren't hearing the tell-tales. But give it a few months and I think you may look back at this video and cringe at how easily you were impressed. The tech is only going to get better (especially in terms of fidelity) and maybe eventually it will be much more convincing. But right now this all sounds like musical smoke and mirrors to me. [I'm not trying to spoil your enjoyment, I'm just trying to let you understand that there's a whole level of listening that exposes the AI tricks.]
