FABRICATING CUSTOM TUBE FRAME | TOYOTA TACOMA BUILD ep 8
In today's episode we are going to be cutting up and disposing of the original bent frame off of this Toyota Tacoma. We'll also be taking a trip to the transmission shop and machine shop. Last but not least, we'll be begging the fabrication of our fully custom tube frame that will be the foundation of our rock crawler. I'm so excited to get into the actual fabrication of this build and not just the parts removal and replacements! If you're not subscribed yet you better just jump on it so you can follow along with this build and don't forge to leave a comment with your input!!!

Trent, the torque convertor is a critical part of the crawler. Torque convertors are available in different stall speeds. Having a higher stall speed will allow the engine to develop higher RPM before completely engaging the transmission. This could be beneficial when climbing a tall obstacle. Perhaps some research into this issue via other crawler builders experiences would help. As a former drag racer, the torque convertor stall speed really made a difference in leaving the starting line under the appropriate power. Spend the money on a quality convertor, going to be worth every penny!
There is no way I could work like you with 10k people telling me how to do it and I’m doing it wrong. You’re a saint.

🦋 wow huge shout out to Bob for the fire extinguishers and thank you for proving that it does take a community to keep everyone safe. 🔥🔥🔥🫧🫧🫧🫧🧯🧯🧯🧯🧯👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
🦋 I can’t quite imagine what one must think if they only were watching the end of this with Trent wearing his beanie cap without the propeller his well fitted rain (welders) jacket lol, and his lime green gloves. He looks like somebody doing a children’s show. Thanks for a great video Trents Garage - Big shout out to Trent and all of the shops that are doing building/rebuilding and of course the rest of the team Brandon and Allie! This will be hilarious when Leo gets older and watches this.
It is nice how you explain what your doing as you move from one section of the rebuild to the next. It was awesome that one of your subscribers sent you 2 fire extinguishers!
You can hardly call it a truck anymore...just the cab. I am really interested to see this frame come together.

It's still more of a truck than a Honda Ridgeline!
Glad you’re keeping everyone & everything safe - nice to see Brandon has a welding face mask too
Good job Trent...very proud of you to just jump into life and life's pleasures! Way to go man!
Heck yeah Trent, yeah I’m here watching
I'm always impressed with how versatile Brandon is - whatever Trent needs help with, Brandon is right there. What an amazing relationship you have and it's fantastic to see you employing your friend and getting along so well. What a great team you are. And of course Team Trent and Allie also never ceases to amaze me. I REALLY enjoy all your content on both channels. (including Joel, Leo and the dogs). Cheers from Australia.
The first thing I see after you talked about the importance of keeping sparks from hitting the cardboard boxes was sparks hitting the boxes. Oh well, so much for good intentions.
Trent you may want to get a few Welding blankets. We had 4, made a portable wall out of 3 of them and one for throwing over other things. Best investment we ever made.
Trent, I see a future build and small business opportunity in your future. Build a decent sized straight truck, with a large propane tank for refilling other tanks at people's homes. The twist is the truck would be loaded at the base of the mountain and have snow tracks to service mountain residents. Enjoying your Toyota build. Fun to tag along on the adventure.
Have a great week.
Oh heck yeah😃 I bet 'Bob' is a fireman... yup yup that base well and truly covered😏
12:30 BRINGING back memories of when MATTS OFF ROAD RECOVERY STARTED HIS BULID NOW LOOK AT THE MONSTER TRUCK WRECKER HE HAS 💪🙌👍🏻
I think that I am enjoying watching this build so much because your own enjoyment is coming through the camera.
Looks Great!! Have a Wonderful Week!! 🌹😊❤
Oh yeah I’ll be watching the whole episode, I’m probably I’m about as stoked as you are Trent. Specially get to see a rock crawler getting built from the ground up super cool well we’ll catch you on the next one until then peace and chicken grease 😁👍👍😎
So cool. Happy the block was ready to go. Tube-frame looks like it ill work. Nice job. Thanks for sharing
I simply like your videos.
Trent, you are such a great storyteller/teacher. I cant wait to the end result. I’m hooked on this adventure.

After seeing all the new cool tools in Trent’s garage I take back any complaints I have made in the past about Allie treating Trent like a small child when he lusts after more tools. Great episode.😅
Here we go again..another great day with Trent's Garage. Watching and learning..Thanks for share Trent 🙌❤️
Your awesome Trent !! Keep up the good work.
I am most impressed with your skills, you do have a clear area to work in, that is good. Things are beginning to take shape. Best Wishes from Mike. ❤
good work. the old chassis all cut up and disposed of. the new box frame will look great. now all your measurements have to be spot on but I have faith in you, Brandon is a great friend and a good worker
I watch and admit I have no idea what you are doing or why but don’t care. It’s fun to watch. On behalf of us all, thank you Bob for the fire extinguishers! Trent, this outfit will never turn you into a fashion icon.

Cool beans !!!!!!😊
I would recommend fish plates over all the frame sections that you butt welded together. I’m no engineer but when I built my frame years ago everyone I talked to suggested fish plates over the frame sections joints for more weld surface and strength. Just my 2 cents. Anyway love the progress and both channels! Keep up the great work!

Excellent work guys!!!
Luv the colorful gloves
It's interesting watching 💜🙏🏽🦋
I'm learning very slowly... new oil pan, transmitter! Very nice that you have 2 fire-extinguishers as well. Allie has a good eye for detail as the "photographer" and editor and let's not forget about Brandon who is adding his skills and labor. You go Trent's Garage!
Hope you're welding the roll cage with TIG. You have to reach to the root of each joint for proper strength.
❤ great job much love and blessings
I can't wait to see it Trent. This video was so good. Now we're rolling.
thanks Bob!
🥰 Wow Bob such a generous, thoughtful gift. 😂 I just looked and thought-that’s just a cab of a truck-when you started this project I had no idea how much building you were going to do. Of course I have no idea what you’re doing but I love watching you be so happy doing this. And it’s always great to see (hear), Allie, Brandon, and nice to see Dave. You make it interesting with your explanations. Love you all ❤️

🦋I agree with Allie I love machine shop. 👀👀
I’m doing a similar build with an old Jeep. After watching this video I’m scraping the frame and go with new fresh metal, so much easier in the long run. Plus it’s fully boxed! I’m really enjoying your new channel, it’s pretty awesome we are doing similar builds. Hope to meet you on the trail one day.

Things are looking great, I do enjoy watching you guys being all into the truck build, all hands on deck for enjoying life in the garage, I remember those days watching my man get happy when a part comes off and a new idea is in sight. Thanks for the happy memories, y'all keep the joy coming.
Very interesting 👌👍
🧐🧐Tip 4 ya Trent! For a stronger fitment to weld your frame parts together. Note square butt welds are weak only good for static pressures. They don't do well flexing and twisting.👉👉 Cutting Z's or V's male and female ends in the parts to weld together are stronger against flexing and twisting forces. Their less likely to split or sheer. 🤔🤔If not and it's to late by the time this vid was posted. You might need to weld side plates and from the bottom U wraps around the weld joints to spred the forces away from the joints.

I always enjoy watching your videos. I'm living vicariously through your videos. I was active like you when I was younger. My throat cancer two years ago really slowed me down to a crawl. Thank you for sharing your adventures with me and letting me come along for the ride.
You are doing a great job Trent.
This is an instructive video you can do something with it I have shared this video with some students of the car engineering course I am very curious about the end result Greetings from Roosendaal - The Netherlands Hans.👍👍👍👍🍀

You know more than I do, Jack. Of all trades master of none.
Splurge on a new heavy duty torque converter, Mr. Childs If you're going to go rock crawling with those big tires, that's where that converter works it's hardest. Along with a new supercharged engine and new transmission, that old torque converter may or may not last long. Oh, and close up that box of Cheez-Its...going to get stale. Enjoying the show, good job!
Boy Trent, talk about starting from scratch. You are not just doing a rebuild but a complete fabrication from the ground up. Awesome.
I love the welding cap! I'm into this channel for the fashion -- first the jacket and now the cap! Way to rock the welding wardrobe, Trent!
great show

Progress!
Wow, I didn't realize that the entire frame was getting replaced...amazing.
Mechanic tips! Definitely replace the torque converter, it's the heart of the transmission, consider welding on chassis braces for rock crawling endeavors!
nice job. This is going to be an awesome build.
Looking great, so far! Certainly way more than I'd ever attempt! It's moving faster than I expected!!
Nice!
Loving this additional content! You sure do have a wide variety of skills!! Hopefully you influence some of our younger generation to learn as much as possible!

Trent you can do alot of things, but I love it you also admit it when you can't do it and hire it done !
Another great video. This is going to be a great journey, thanks for sharing.
Great job all of you and you couldn't drag me away
I can't wait to see it finished! I watch your other channel, just supporting the channel, this is really interesting. Great Job Trent&Allie& Brandon
We’ll Done!
🦋 it seems like you’ve disassembled and gotten rid of everything maybe you could explain what is what you have left worth? Rebuilding a transmission, Motor?, Chassis etc What made it worth it to buy that truck? Maybe just some in a nutshell numbers for those of us who don’t understand. And if I’m the only one that doesn’t understand the finance part of it don’t waste your time answering I’ll just ride it out.

This is exactly what I was thinking as I was watching. 😂 Granted I know nothing of building/fabrication of trucks like this. I suppose I’m just wondering if buying the truck as it was, was more cost effective than buying a truck say… from a “junkyard” if all you were looking for was the cab, engine, and transmission.
Trent you're doing a great job I wish I could well but I don't and I'm 70 and I'm not going to start learning now all right this is Bob from Vero Beach Florida God bless stay warm have a great week and we'll catch you on Trent and Allie
Thank you for sharing..... really enjoying the vids keep up the great work!!!!!!!!
Happy Sunday Trent framing coming along great
Spends a bunch of money and time to build a welding table and then welds on the ground. Pretty sure that's how it always goes. Definitely going to be an awesome build.

Haha yeah, the table is too small for these frame rails!
Trent, you should put a new billet torque converter in place of the stock one!
Thanks for all the information, do any of the videos talk about where the body mount relocations came from.
BOY!! I don't know Trent, for some one who says that they don't know that much about it, you seem to be doing a pretty impressive job. I really like your channel. Kudos from Tennessee.

Toyota when to a lot of trouble to build that frame. I'm having a hard time not boxing it in and adding a roll cage for structural support. With a leap of faith and she's your baby, I'll be watching...👍Roc'on!
COOL
Got a great laugh when you mentioned welding sparks and the corrigated boxes 3:40 and you immediately cut to your first plasma cut, throwing sparks onto the boxes 4:02... lol That stuff is going to happen in tight quarters. Extinguishers were a great addition. :)

Well... it is a good thing that you bought that truck so that you could cut it into chunks that you then haul to the dump, get a rebuilt transmission and order all new parts for everything else!! 😀
Great job can’t wait to see what’s next much blessings 🙏🏾
This Is awesome Trent I’m so glad you decided to do your own frame build , it will be fantastic when you’re done ! Also I think Mike mentioned it but ride hight at 4 inches would be perfect that is how I set ours up ! The rest is droop! Rock on Trent !
