Fabricating custom shock mounts for a BMW Airhead

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Super stoked on how the rear of the BMW R90 project is coming along! This week I make new upper shock mounts to fit a pair of 420mm shocks to complete the BMW euro-bobber look. Lots of careful planning, methodical measurements and a little welding are involved. The left shock sits nearly 3/4 of an inch further outboard than the right - from the factory- so watch to see how the two mounts come together.

Great job, I'm planning build for my girlfriend and I was going to replace the shock mounts on the swing arm. Your solution is much better. Thanks.

    Does 400mm shock enough?

Thanks for the video, man. Really helpful. How did you calculate what length of shocks to get?

Glad it helped! These shocks, YSS RZ362, are purpose built for this style of bike so I started with the shock length first - 420mm- and worked backwards to decide where to place the upper mounts. I tried to mimic the geometry of an R80 monoshock model a friend had at his shop.

Do you think the original brackets you cut off are strong enough to support the shocks (ignoring shock angle etc)

They seem pretty robust, since they need to be strong enough to support the subframe (which holds the original shocks, after all) but I'm not sure they were designed to be strong in the directions the shocks would supply force.

Looks great but I think the shocks might bend or deform on a hard bump because they're mounting angle isn't true to the radius of the swingarm travel arc.

My aim was to replicate the suspension geometry of the later monolever models, but with twin shocks. If I have any problems with bent shocks I'll bring it up with BMW :)

Thanks man! The shocks are from a company YSS - you'll have to go through a distributor in your country. If you're in the US, I have used EPM Performance: epmperformance.com/ they're great to work with. The handlebars in this video are the factory ones. I replaced them with Renthal Fatbars but I just bought those at the local powersports store.
