Welding for the last 15 years you tell it exactly correct good job dude
This vid made me feel so much better about my welds. Anyone can make a fantastic looking weld on a bench, but welding tube in general or laying on your back underneath the truck, welding upside down is difficult for the hobbyist. Keep up the good content!
I build tube chassis and roll cages for a living and can throw down with the best on some DOM tubing. I must say man, 90% of what you said is correct. Only thing i would change is your settings ( 17.0v, 175wfs), and learn to roll your wrist so you can hit the entire joint in 2 passes and have less tie ins. Also use some puddle manipulation to fully fuse the joint and wet out the weld. Try using a counterclockwise circular motion and keep the toes of your weld even and it will come out 1000X better!

What is your opinion pull-push little bit back-pull-push little bit back-pull and so on technique? I find this technique the easiest way to follow circular path and get penetration.
@steven00786

@@TJEMPPA10 it’s called the “whip and pause” technique. I use it. It leaves nice dimes.
A lot of people don’t realize how important full penetration is especially on a life saving system. Also it looks better too. Grade A work my man
I vote expand this mini series. This is the kind of content we need between projects.
Just a reminder to everyone: wear a respirator whenever you are sanding/grinding. Those silicate, zirconia, carbide etc. particles cause massive damage to your lungs over time. Great video sir! You taught me a lot in just one video. I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Do they actually though or is that just the theory. I've worked with too many old mechanics that wouldn't even know how to wear one and still are fit as a fiddle in their later year to believe that. Welding gasses or chemicals are a different story but even after a few days of grinding peoples lungs clear up

super crazy helpful. getting ready to make a race kart chassis.
Love the fabrication series, would love to see your method in calculating tube take up for tube bending. Also, maybe techniques you use on notching tube. Sometimes I use my notcher but I find myself using the chop saw a lot and then finishing the tube with a flat disc to finish the coping, and then some scotchbrite pads for clean up.
This is great. There's 2 things I need to get better at to become more well rounded with my automotive skills. One is fabrication the other is bodywork.
Dude finally a very very informative video! I don’t weld at all, and see u guys weld, Really motivates me to try it out! Thank dudes for sharing this. More videos on this subject please!!
This video is so timely. I just got my Millermatic 212 w/autoset running a couple days ago and welded my first beads. Results were mixed. Very surprising how much difference can be made turning the machine down. I'm starting a '94 F150 prerunner build so I'm stoked to see this content!
So glad I found this. Self teaching myself right now. I kept having thick welds and was confused. Just bought a notcher cant wait for eveything to come in so I can try this out. Thanks brotha
Damn son the way you polish that tube is something else
Awesome - your videos get better and better! Watch every one! Do all the things you suggested!
As much might would be great. About to start a 02 tundra build and these type of videos are helping me make my build cleaner and safer.
Great video, definitely would like to see like a tips and tricks kind of series of everything you do in general (fabrication and welding) to help out people who want to do this but don't have any experience. You guys are awesome and keep up the good work!
Great info guys keep the tips coming!
I couldn't agree with you more lol. I'm no professional welder either but I am a garage fabricator myself. It is a must to properly prepare anything that is gonna be welded. Impurities/contaminents are no good for Mig or Tig welding especially if it's gonna be for a cage & it's supposed to structurly strong. All in all great video 👍
Im just sitting here waiting for the youtube welding inspectors to come outta the wood works. Good video dude!

i actually was a weld inspector ,, dont tempt me .lol
Thanks for the video and instruction. Im taking a community education welding class once a week at night. Im just starting to learn.
Good advice. Thanks for your help!
Please do a TIG video dude. I need to learn. Also, I want to talk to you about building some ELB’s and brackets on my Ranger. I’ll hit you up soon!
Cool and interesting video. Definitely should do a series with other how to videos on plate work and maybe tig welding.
Another awesome one 👍 keep it up guys ✌️
Good shit Maynard! Def more Fab 101 stuff, whatever you feel.
Great video too bro. Thanks for the tips
I really appreciate the details and multiple examples. Great video dude. Subscribed.
Great video man !!! Thank you !!!
I love my mig welder seems everyone Tigs theses days..
Great video!!
Killer video All the way from Australia 🤙🏻
Good information. Thanks for the video
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. Really helps people like me. Appreciate it.
Well done sir!
First usefill video i found on mig on stainless. Most of the other videos are more or less «show off». Thank you for sharing.
Great information.
Do a tig video! Keep up the great videos

Yeah, TIG would be awesome. I'm just getting back into prepping for welding after like 20 something years. Thinking I'm going to try to make a TIG welder from the buzz box I just picked up, I have a comment in the article also with a circular loop to my other post thoughts: facebook.com/james.analytic/posts/3324124374316008 Excellent timing! I wan't to fabricate a few projects... though this all started more for a Mike Basich Dodge RAM Faraday Caged RF Mind Control Patrol rig more without the skid on top and four actuators for the cap so I can stand in to stretch out and get a better view. Maybe even for a launch pad on top of my cab for a balloon or drone too... so I don't have to get out of the rig (much) since that will be important. I used to want to pre-runner mod my old long bed regular cab Ranger... though that was stolen.

I think I have the same dirt Alliance sticker on my welding hood.
Nice video! Sometimes I find I make a larger bead when I reduce wire speed, as I think I unconsciously slow down when I don’t see the puddle fuse into both pieces as promptly as with higher wire speed.
Nice product placement with the Monster can.
I would be down to see some more fabrication videos! Maybe a rear shock/ bump mount on a stock truck? I need some tips on plate work for bumps
I have the same Miller machine--those auto-set wire feed speeds are indeed very fast, lol. Very "ambitious" of Miller to set them there, lol. Nice video--thanks for posting it.
I agree!
Whether you're painting or welding , prep. is key for a great finish.
Good video. I agree on a plate welding video. Be good if you covered plasma cut edge prep as well.
+1 on tig welding video
Pacific punch is the best monster drink. Change my mind.
Awesome video wanna see tig also
Nice
what's your technique for getting the nice clean uniform chamfers on the notches? would love to see quick video that
Thank you! I really was interested in how you cut and beveled your tubes. I need to do a crossover H-pipe and how you notch the other one it connects too. Thanks if you can reply to me. Cheers from Motown.
Just got a welder. Thanks
Dude please make a tig video too! Super rad content
I’m thinking some tig videos and also some weld techniques. I think those would be very interesting and helpful
Nice video explanation, seems like a lot of people have no clue about cleanliness when it comes to weld prep or notching. More people need to take pride in their work and not just throw stuff together. I suspect if you have an auto setup machine a novice will set it to that without realizing if wire speed is slower that will allow more heat into the joint and allow weld to lay down. They don’t take the time to learn about what theirs welder is capable of.
Just as a quick note for flap disc guys: pay the extra 12 bucks next time you’re buying discs for a “prep disc” if they have em. Basically scotchbrite and steel wool in a coating on a disc, won’t remove material except mill scale and well worth how long they last
Great explanation! How about welding up a fabbed engine mount bracket for a biscuit type mount.
Can we get a tig video, the welding series would sweet
I do ATV repairs on the welds the robot misses and have the WFS down to around 200 and and voltage around 18.5. If I go too low it doesn't want to lay flat as much. Doesn't look terrible but too high of a bead for what I'm doing. I haven't been doing it long though so still trying to find that right spot on the machine.
I was taught to make that weld uphill. I think your settings would yield different results.
good shit
im about to tackle my first exo cage and can not find tools to hold tube together whilst im going to weld? any ideas, oh great vid
Oh, may I request? 360 cage welds without cutting the roof.
@WingsWorldChannel
4 жыл бұрын
We will go over that if we do a cage video! On the 92f1build we broke a few tacks and dropped the cage down to weld the top of the tubes. That is the best way to do it without cutting your roof off.
@joedemers5480

The technique that I have seen is to holesaw holes in the floor. Leave the downtubes long. Jack up the cage and verify the fit. Lower the cage and weld. Raise the cage and mark the length. Cut the length. Slip in the floor plates between the cage tube and the body. Weld the floor plate to the body (over the holesaw holes). Weld the cage to the floor plates.

@@joedemers5480 welding the cage plates to the floor creates a heat affected zone that is weaker. You're better off running bolts through the plates. It's what they spec for BITD, Ultra4, Score.

Doberman Racing, thank you for the reply. What you say does make sense and is certainly adaptable to the rest of the method I outlined.
Shock mounts would be cool
Awesome content brother! I know this was a few years old but lets do them all! Mig, tig technique... lets do some welder basics with that. I see you have a miller mig.. is that an everlast tig? Im down to watch all your videos. Im sure I'm not the only one.
Emery Cloth is a cost effective option for cleaning tubes. A Lot softer than sand paper and can buy on amazon prime ;)
Do you cut, etch, and analyze? MIG can look absolutely perfect and be 100% junk. Do you cut, etch, and analyze the prep? Are you polishing the mill scale or removing it? The welds look quite nice, but I have little trust in MIG. I have seen numerous MIG welds that were gorgeous, but had no penetration. MIG has a hard time punching through mill scale too. Your welds certainly look nice, but I would verify before trusting.

Came to the comments for that same thing. Absolutely sure they penetrated properly but I would have loved to see the difference in fusion between the four.
Show a video on how to install a cage in the cab of the truck. Never seem to find a video on that part. Or did you already do it and I missed it? Regardless, love the videos. Keep up the great work.

We havent covered that! It is definitely a video we want to do though
How do you notch your tubing and also what do you use to bevel the notch ends. Thanks Brad
How much of an issue is rust inside the tube? Will it even be a problem is the tube is welded sealed on both ends or does it need to be treated? Any help would be appreciated. Experience is always the best way to learn but the slowest too. Giving my first tube welds a go today at home
When you get to the TIG welding video I would be interested in the "T" joint both sides welding. I have had one side coming out ok then the other experiences porosity. I was told to increase argon flow which seemed to help a lot. Am interested in what you find out. Good tips, as said below, the tacks are a great idea!
@husq2100
4 жыл бұрын
Tom Herd it might be because you are getting so much penetration that the back side of first pass is oxidising , Ie similar to mill scale, so when you weld the other side you are basically just pulling those impurity’s to your weld. If so, try a little less amps on first pass and then thoroughly clean the back side ready for weld
@tomherd4179
4 жыл бұрын
@@husq2100 Will give that a try. It seems like a very good aolution for the problem. I turned up the argon to about 22 and that seemed to help some. Thanks!
Do a video on the plate work!
Gotta do the tig like mig video
As far as auto setting vs personal setting, doesn't the extra material supplied by the auto setting make for a stronger joint due too the additional bonding material?
What's your method for putting nice even bevels in the tube ends ?
@puder411
3 жыл бұрын
i was wondering the same thing!
Are you doing whip and pause the puddle manipulation ?
Have you (or can you) MIG weld thin wall (.028-.065) 4130 steel tubing? If so what settings or method would you use? Thanks!
I have the same millermatic 215 and whats funy is that in autoset for 1/8 is 18v 385 ipm but in the chart inside it tells you 18v 310 ipm i dont know why since autoset match the chart exept in the 1/8 steel
How do you bevel the notches?
Is the tig video on prepping tube out yet? Didn’t see it.
Do you have a video for exaggeration pipes welding I’m making my own pipe and muffler tip
Killer vid my guy! Love the explanation and in depth process. I’m located in Orange County, so maybe you guys are up for tackling a new truck to work on?
Please do a tig video. Please and thank you.

Hello, do you have 220 volts in your garage?

Tig welding without beveling it is also stupid, the wall thickness isnt the same all around until its beveled

How did you put the bevel on the tubes?
@matthewriggle9099

this is why im in the comments lol.
Do everything
Not a big fan of ocellated of weld pool due to introduction of impurities. A good gmaw weld should be dialed in so it’s a slow steady pace no ocellated motion with gmaw no impurities introduced. Excellent point on metal prep. Gmaw should be follow root and just travel. That will yield best heat affected area and penetration.
Thanks for the tips, did you ever do more Mig videos?
Can't see the weld being put down, would like to see the process, not just the done welds..Are you doing circles or are you dragging it ?
Is that a handa dirt bike and is it for sell
How do you bevel it
I would highly recommend *against* putting something in your lathe and using scotchbrite while it spins to remove the mill scale. That's a good way to turn a nice machine into a pile of scrap. The dust that comes off the mill scale will absolutely ruin your ways over time (remember, mill scale is harder than steel), let alone anything the scotchbrite lets off. If you absolutely insist on doing it, put down plastic to catch it. Cloth won't help, it'll go right through it.
@jasonbirch1182

Yeah I put a piece of cardboard or plastic over my lathe when I use any abrasive anything. I try to avoid it but sometimes it just makes sense.
Anyone know if an Eastwood mig 135 is any good for welding tubes??
@FPSninjaFACE
4 жыл бұрын
Also wat is the best size tube to use for the main structure of a cage/chassis??
Not that prepping your work is bad, but its not necessary. I used to program miller welding robots at an oem exhaust manufacturer, and we would try things like this to see if we would get better repeatable results, and i can tell you the actual welding is much more important than prep. With a good weld program it didnt matter if parts were oily or unprepared they would weld just the same as long as they were dimensionally correct.
@will5948

Is that why the welds on my exhaust had holes in them? :)
