FAA Investigation thanks to Facebook video I posted with my Airplane & Drone (Thanks Drone Police!)

Ойын-сауық

First and foremost, I know not all Drone Pilots (I am one) are running around reporting everyone making peoples lives miserable. I also understand why some make sure everyone is playing by the rules (The rules where forced on them, they have to abide by them, so should everyone else). I just think this situation could have been handled differently. It ended well but a simple question about Frame Rate on a Video I posted to a DJI Drone Facebook page where I made a Joke about flying both at the same time lead to an interesting (but educational) conversation with the Local FAA FSDO (Flight Standards District Office). This Video is a friendly reminder that anyone, anywhere can report something they don't like to the FAA and the FAA is obligated to investigate it. Fly Safe!

Fun Story, glad it worked out! 2 months ago I got a letter from a FSDO in Texas about violation I have made doing low altitude aerobatics. That was a fun battle proving I was not in Texas, my airplane has never been in Texas, in fact hasn't left PA since 2019 and I was working 300 feet underground in a coal mine at the time of the complaint! But, you are right, they have to investigate every complaint, he told me that as well.......

I asked him to take the controls so I could snap a photo. You can even see his hand on the yoke in the opposite seat in the photo. FSDO bro called me and after some back and forth, he told me he's actually in the same facebook group (local pilots) and saw the photo long before the complaint came in and thought nothing of it

In the EU they can and have revoked driving licenses for drunken riding a bicycle. Which really sucks even more if you're a bus driver or a trucker. So the principle doesn't surprise me. That said, I'm glad the FAA would investigate if someone did something actually stupid and reckless and posted it on youtube. I also think real drone enthousiasts would think two times before reporting 'apparently dangerous drone pilots' to the FAA. It only gives more ammunition to the people who want to ban all drones everywhere.

Wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't some of that peppered in. On another note, while only a complete idiot would try legal or not, flying a drone, composing and hold a tracking shot while side slipping into a greased landing on a soft field in a tail dragger you should be elevated to God like status for both manned and unmanned aviation a-like (assuming you live) Sorry that happened to you brother. This was a great video. I think your planning and intentions were sincere. i think it reflects well upon the FAA, your company etc. This is an example of the system really working including up to the point of the pilot intelligently discussing it. By the way, during my training, I had to fly with the chief pilot at my flying school prior to soloing. I loved landing exactly the way you did in your video, come in high and then drop down fast (under good control) and then flare. My instructor had not complained about it, but the chief pilot exclaimed "What are you doing! Landing on a carrier ?" He didn't like it much. I thought it was great, perfect control.... anyway, I like the way you handled this.

There are Drone pilots out there freeking over the FAA's obvious attempt to over regulate the drone world but this may have been one of those Karen's who try and go out of their way to make Drone Pilot's lives hell because that is their hobby (They have no real life). We all get uptight when we see the obvious rule breakers going 1500 meters up into man'd airspace because we know that means more heat on those of us trying to follow the rules. It is nice to know that the FAA does follow up on all complaints, just sorry some scatter brain tried to take a shot across the bow and made you a target. People need to grow up and get a pair. That landing looks awesome and brought back a memory I hadn’t thought of for a long time - so thank you for that! Here’s the story in case any one wants to know more. The first time I flew (I was just a passenger) was with my college boyfriend and we were in his dad’s little Cessna tail dragger. We were landing at his parents’ private field that had a telephone line right at the end of the short runway. So he had to stay high enuf to get over that and then really slip it in to get us on the ground. I knew nothing about this procedure and was terrified!! Looking back on it now I realize how much fun it was and that he was a good pilot 👏 👏 👏. (He’s flying for a big commercial airline now.)
