F8F BEARCAT Full Power Engine Ground Run | Planes of Fame
This one’s for our ENGINE NOISE LOVERS! If you don’t enjoy loud noises, maybe skip this video; but if you want to hear what a F8F Bearcat sounds like at full power, then turn up your volume, sit back, and enjoy the symphony of sound created by the Pratt & Whitney 2800 18-cylinder piston powered radial engine.
Planes of Fame is currently closed due to COVID-19 and had to cancel our favorite event, our annual airshow. We are in for turbulent times ahead. If you are a WWII aircraft enthusiast or someone who appreciates aviation history and would like to support Planes of Fame Air Museum, you can:

My kind of guy, a pilot who's not afraid of getting his hands dirty and helping with the ground crew and mechanics.
AH, The pure sound of life, a roaring R-2800. Short run, but a run none the less.
Was an F-4 driver but nothing beats the sound of a all those piston engines of WWll like a Pratt & Whitney or Rolls Royce Merlin.
Wow I'm never this early. Excited to see this old girl with new life!!
Engine "noise?" Sorry no, it's ENGINE "MUSIC!" Keep up the great work.
Now imagine 12 of those on a carrier deck prepping for takeoff at the same time. This is why your great grandpa is deaf folks.

And a real hero from the greatest generation.💪🇺🇸 Thank you WWII vets.
Awesome guys as always. Nice to see another Bearcat out there. Thank you
Oh, yeah! There's nothing quite like the wonderful music of a factory-hopped-up R-2800 at full-song!!!
Loving the videos, thank you POF 🥰 also LOL for Rob walking into the frame, miss you all!
The engine sounds really good. Great job with the restoration
Utterly marvellous, thank you for sharing.
Dang that Pratt & Whitney R-2800 sounds awesome. I can't wait for this thing to fly later this year. It will be epic having this "Ol' Bear" roaming around.
awsome! thanks for doing these.
Great sound of the engine and I love the video thank you . Keep the video's coming.

j'Adore cette belle mécanique musicale! Quelle puissance pour ce gros matou.😉✌👍
Your Team is AMAZING. Hope to see you next year at Reno. Thanks.
Sounds absolutely beautiful!
Amazing plane!
Awesome the engine sounds good and good timing Rob Patterson
Looking forward to seeing it fly!!
I can't wait to see and hear this fly!
Christ, that bloke went pretty near to that propellor !!!!!
Brilliant
Beautiful. I would have parked further away from the other vehicles. Because Murphy
Good looking Cat.
When will you guy's be back open to the public? I'd love to come back out and visit again and see this MAGNIFICENT AIRCRAFT!! Keep up the GREAT work. Much respect and support from Yuma, AZ. 👍👍
Steve’s my hero 👍💯
Soooooo cool
Recall seeing an Avenger tethered and run up to max.Was literally flying static! What I recall most was the flexing of the prop! This was at NAS BOCA CHICA 1959.
Sweet
Nice👍😎
Love radials!
That beast wants to fly!

MrTurboparker I still remember when this Bearcat had no wings and no glass mounted
Lot of faith in that small metal loop sunk into the tarmac, (where the tail is held down)
Looks and sounds great. I am guessing that the engine cowlings have to be off for this test for heat and easy access reasons? Love seeing the propeller spin sync and de-sync with the camera's frame rate. there is just something fascinating about that.
Awesome. Can't wait to see it painted. Off subject, since Oshkosh isn't happening this year and the newly donated Meteor was to arrive after Oshkosh, when will it arrive now to POF?
When is the anticipated first flight? Ready to drive over from Phoenix as soon as you are allowed to open.
Probably my favorite of the Grumman Cats.
After spending many hours playing WarThunder, I found the Bear Cat to be the best piston fighter ever built. The maneuverability is ridiculous, way beyond any jet with a tight turning radius in addition to the ability to fly straight up. I am glad I didn't have to feel the G Forces. Without the armament it is a real hair on 🔥 screamer.

She really wants to get off the ground!!! The way she pushed forward, you can tell that old girl just wants to fly!! Even unfinished, that is one beautiful bird.
Oh - THAT was amazing. Can’t recall the T.O. RPMs - 2500 or 2800?
I use to help take care of the one in Camarillo. My favorite plane fo all time. This appears to be a F8F-2?
I can't wait to see it painted up in its livery. What's it gonna be? Marines or Navy?
Is this the grey bearcat that was done up in a foreign livery and flew at the POF airshow 15 or 20 years ago? Sure missed the the air show this year.
When is first flight, Chino Air Museum member can’t wait

Ohmigoodness. Nobody knows better than Steve and the POF crew, but this made me so nervous. If the tiedown hook or strap breaks, you just seriously did a self-imposed faceplant of a near-priceless Bearcat. Also, in the last video, Steve said that he doesn’t like to run planes on the ground for any longer than necessary because it can make some of the cylinders too hot (?)

Hallo great Sounds and Pictures only to bad digital Photos in Propst Not Like real movis
Yes a good idea to keep the elevators up!
What fuel do you use in the girls? are there special additives that are needed and are the engines making around the same bit of power as they are supposed to?
next step.. take off go around and land :D.. you are almost at the mark. so exiting
Wise test, clever to anchor it to the ground, adding some chocks. I would rather not be standing aside the propeller, and not even in a forward angle.
Nice vid. Don't worry - Dudes without hearing muff protectors....you won't have to worry about hearing anything in 10 years.
What are these 3 equal sized inline circles on side of the cockpit? What are other 2 round holes at the tail for? What are these things behind the pilots backrest or backplate. Could you do a walkaround to show what everythings is for. And i wish you could show what every part inside and outside but its imposible i guess.

hf c I’m no expert, but I may be able to help answer some of your questions. I don’t know what the three circles are, but the two circles under the tail are inspection covers, the half moon by the belly is a spring loaded lick in foot step for climbing up, and the little rectangle one is a spring loaded push in hand hold also for climbing up.
I'd need that fan for my room. Need some proper ventilation and air circulation.
God I miss the propellers ignitions of all Allied Aircraft!
👍
Do you go to WEP or 80% power?
There is no such thing anymore as 115/145 avgas. How do you get anything close to max power out of that engine? Additives?
Yes, money can buy happiness. It all depends where you shop.
How does the F8f stack up vs. other Naval fighters? They had such a short service life.

They were the best piston engined fighter ever produced by the US. It outperformed all of the late war birds, including -4 Corsairs. My dad watched them as a young Marine ruin the Mustang guys at a nearby airfield, said it flew circles around a Pony. I would say the only thing that rivals it is a Sea Fury. The recipe was the same as Willy M's: giant engine wrapped in the smallest plane possible, but with Grumman's usual airframe toughness and ease of maintenance. Unfortunately it had air to air in mind and couldn't carry the ordnance that an f7f or late Corsair could, and with the jet age's rapid onset the Bear found itself out of a job since it could neither combat jets as an equal nor carry the heavy bomb and rocket load of a Corsair.

@@robertmantell1700 The F7F Tigercat.😍😍😍😍😍😍 That bird still looks fast standing still. Not to keen on no ejection seat and kinda big for sea duty. But it and Sea Fury are favorites for me.

@@robertmantell1700 ..although i love the bearcat ...they all are great with vastly different missions..the Navy fighters were short legged birds for fleet defense and island ground support while the 'stangs were long legged for bomber escort missions deep into Europe...a debate that'll never end .

@@mattf49006 I just read some interesting stuff about why the Jug wasn't kept. The book said the USAF needed the range of Pony. Not once was the P-47N mentioned. A quick doc search taught me what dumb shits they were for keeping Mustang. Jug N had about the same range. Also, of all the US late war fighters Mustang had the worst kill ratio in the ETO at 5:1, compared to Jug's 7:1. This shocked me to read that, especially since the Mustang was tardy to the party, squaring off against a Luftwaffe that had been gutted by the 56th FG, and also enjoyed a 4 or 5 to one numerical advantage every time they met Jerry.
Presumably the engine was thoroughly warmed up before the full power run.
Wasn't this our answer to the FW190?
@WALTERBROADDUS

Not exactly.....The Corsair and Hellcat were already a good match down low Altitude.
Its like dyno-analyzing a high hp engine.
All it needs is 8 50 cals!
Very cool video, but I have to say this - it's just dumb to stand anywhere near the plane (the geometry term) of a rotating propeller during a test run up. Is anything going to happen? Almost certainly not. But it literally takes zero effort not to stand there.

They're confident in their work it seems. But me? I'd stand off.
Every time I look at the Bearcat I wonder where is their room for fuel , it was such a small beautifully built airplane if it would have seen combat during WW2 it probably would’ve had had the range of the Corsair or hellcat because simply because those bigger planes could carry much more fuel than this plane as a carrier based aircraft, but if you were defending your nation’s airspace like the spitfire or the ME 109 where long range capability isn’t as important the bearcat would actually have been superior to any other US fighter including the mustang for that role
Apparently, by this stage of the restoration, there was no money left for proper ear plugs or ear muffs.
I think th eighteen cylinder sounds really rough.
why are there people standing in line with the prop. Thats a dumb way to die folks.
Uou never stand to the side of a propeller driven air plane. If a blade comes off it will split you in half.

I think this physically hurt the camera

I think it's the autofocus going nuts from the spinning blades. Although that wouldn't explain the audio being messed up too.
Pretty thing- almost as nice as a Sea Fury.
