Why does F1 look so slow? Because TV is only filming the cars with zoom in/out and follow the cars. I really miss the Helicopter views. They had them much more often back in the past.

Maybe helicopters are an issue, with the downwash they generate and can wreck the cars'aero performance - like what happened with Stroll when the heli flew too low. edit: If anyone else wants to repeat the previous 800 comments about it being a medical heli and not a tv heli - go ahead.

My one and only live F1 race was the 1986 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim (I was posted in West Germany with the Canadian Army at the time). I went with two buddies and we had no F1 experience and very little knowledge. We were at the old Ostkurve, which had no grandstands or any permanent seating -- we just sat on the grassy hill... or we could stand by the fence, which was only about 30m or so from the track edge. Very little of the track was visible. We could see the cars emerging from the forest at the end of the straight, through the chicane, and then accelerate through the curve before heading out of sight again. We had no idea what was actually happening in the race, but it was an AMAZING experience. I had never seen anything like it, and have been an F1 fan ever since. I hope to see another live race again someday.

TV can't replicate the noise, or the smell of fuel, rubber and tarmac. First race I attended was Spa 1996, had never been there before, arrived on the Friday and could hear the cars practicing, so parked up in a field thinking the circuit was really close... but we were about a mile and a half away! The noise of the cars was incredible. Of course, they are a bit quieter now than they were then, but it's still a visceral experience when you go to a live race. Nothing else like it.

To be fair a GP is worth going for the atmosphere, interactions and so on. It's difficult to follow the action through a single section of the track and keeping tabs on what's happening on with the general picture of the race. That's why my life long dream is to attend a GP via a full paddock pass. You get to get a little behind the scenes and you get to watch the race on TV in the hospitality lounge. Pop a bit from time to time to see what happens on the start/finish straight. Well, back to saving more money for that to happen.

I said this before but I was watching the rolex 24 hour race and the camera angles seemed a lot better in their presentation. A lot more zoomed out and further away, sort of like OPs camera perspective. You could watch the cars coming through multiple corners and fly by. I think F1 zooms in way too much and changes the damn camera shot every other second it seems. I really like when they just stay on board for a while, but they never really do.

Yes, being at a race in person especially when you have good seats is nothing like watching it on TV. I've been to a lot of NASCAR races at different tracks, but there is nothing like standing right at the catch fence on the frontstretch at Daytona or Talladega when 40 (used to be 43) cars come by at 200 MPH. Of course there are security guards in the area to keep you away from the fence - and for good reason - but you can sneak a rush before they tell you to get away.

The OPs point still stands, you see the cars go by, then you have to wait around till they come back by. So you get to see about 15 seconds of the race per lap if you are lucky.

I was at the last Detroit GP in 1988. HORRIBLE course, on deteriorating streets. Senna led every lap. By the end of the race, only Alain Prost was on the same lap, in the other McLaren. Six other cars finished, all a lap or two down. Most of the field didn't finish, due to mechanical failure, collision, or just sliding into the barriers. And most of it we couldn't see. But the party was fun, and seeing the cars in the garages before the race was magic

The appearance on television is as a contributor to this discussion says. Telephoto lenses on broadcast cameras are a cause and tracking shots. The editorial reason for these tracking shots, thus influencing the control room director and vision mixer is the maximisation of exposure of brand images on the cars to global audiences. There are plenty of on-board feeds available to live broadcast directors that they can bring to the transmission, however commerical priorities prevail.

I’ve been watching f1 for years on tv. We had the Indy cars down in Toronto. First time actually getting close to something this fast. The second the subway doors open, I could FEEL the noise in my chest of the aggressive downshifts of those cars. I was COMPLETELY blown away! Like wow! Never knew how loud these things were. I've been to around 65 F1 races since Adelaide in 1986. I was getting a little bored with F1 in the early 1990s and at the race in Montreal in 1991 or 1992 was walking along the back straight and could watch Mansell's Williams through the vehicle access as it went through the esses. That thing was so fast and changed direction so effortlessly. Montreal was great to watch the cars go into the hairpin and exit out as well. If you were in the stand at the exit of the hairpin you were about six feet off the ground and less than that from the cars. The vibration from the engines made my ear canals tingle. It was one of those years in Montreal that teams were racing with some toxic fuel additives (it may have been toluene)which literally made my eyes water. I went to Monza and Spa quite often and Alesi and Berger were usually first out on the Friday in the Ferrari with the V12s. You could hear them shriek around a lot of the track. In 1995 I went to Barcelona and could see the McLarens enter turn 1 - the cars seemed to wobble around a lot and did not seem stable. I could understand why Mansell wanted out. Watching F1 cars in person really does demonstrate how fast they really are.

Tv for sure. At the stadium you get to see the football players in person, you can admire the strategy, the bench, the trainer, the supporters and all what is not shown in tv. While for F1, tv shows everything. Box, onboard, panoramic , time insights, improvements, commentary, interviews, everything. Way better than seeing only a corner for 60-70 times and follow the rest of the race on the maxi screen.

To really be able to follow more of the race TV coverage is awesome, of course. But if you've never been trackside you'll never really get what is going on out there. I was 14 the first time I got close to an F1 track and it was mind-bending. I've only been to a couple of races my whole life but I wouldn't be able to appreciate watching it on TV on the same level if I'd never seen it with my own eyes.

I’ve been to two F1 races, Spa and Montreal. Honestly, the actual races are just a very small part of the experience but it really is better watching them on TV. In fact I watched most of the action on the big screen at the track. Everything else from Thursday to Sunday is better in person. Sitting at Eau Rouge was actually kind of disappointing. It’s such a famous corner but the cars just go flat through there in a line and it was actually good that nothing really happened the year I was there.

TV is a more complete picture in most any sport. Close ups, slow-mos, stats, drone views. But the feel of the atmosphere in a stadium or other sports venue can't be replaced. I still prefer TV though because I'm analytical and data driven.
