F1's Adrian Newey Reveals Future Plans in an Interview with Eddie Jordan | Oyster Yachts

Ойын-сауық

Speaking in an interview with Eddie Jordan, Adrian Newey revealed his future plans at an event hosted by Oyster Yachts during the Historic Monaco Grand Prix weekend.
Taking centre stage in front of an audience of F1’s greatest names - including former World Champion driver Mika Häkkinen, McLaren Racing CEO Zac Brown and driver-turned-pundit Mark Webber - the pair discussed the future of Newey’s career both on and away from the Formula 1 track.
The candid conversation moderated by Newey’s good friend and manager Eddie Jordan, delved into Newey’s remarkable F1 career, why he chose Oyster to build his dream 90-foot-long 885 sailing yacht and approached the obvious and hot question of the minute - “What's next?”

I’ve known Adrian in a small way, when he share a room with Jeff and I after suffering a terrible Isle of Mann TT crossing where all our Bikes were dashed to the floor in a Force 12 gale, he was fairly new into a job at a small team in Reading , I have followed his career through the years and we all meet by chance at Goodwood and Adrian dragged us onto the RedBall stand through the back door and had a chat in front a ten deep crowd . I have always wondered what the crowd thought seeing two bikers in leathers chatting to Adrian . Also posing for a picture with us . What a talented and unassuming man . I know it’s a team sport but his record speaks for itself self . I have just arrived home from hospital after A tumble ( not Bike related ) and I have managed sit up and watch this. The guy is a good example of what is right in the sport long may he continue

Great story. Anyone that's heard of what happened at his only ever job interview in F1 would not have been surprised. It was with Harvey Postletgwaite at Fittipaldi Automotive, and basically consisted of Harvey going for a spin on Adrian's bike.

Seems like an intelligent and very sweet man and also very humble! I hope he’s able to stay busy and keep that mental sharpness that…as he said sometimes dulls with retirement! And what a compliment to have his friend say that for all the years he’s been his friend that he’s never none of anyone to say anything negative about him! What a tribute to this talented man!

Well i say it was to help him get out of the contract and no gardening leaving. Also Eddie loves to say he loves to take money off Ferrari with the amount of drivers he sold them. Also AM is his old Jordan team. So if you want to get out of a contract and get back to work when you want and talk to those 2 teams. EJ would be the best man in your corner. I really hope he retires or goes some where else but not F1. we would have a closer season if his cars where not on the grid

Very poignant on his engineering friends who are no longer in engineering. It is sad as he says. In the UK engineers are rarely valued enough for their skills considering the effort that goes into learning to become one and become professional. Very many engineers simply head into management or financial industries or other more commercial jobs because they can get paid properly for their abilities. It is a sad state of affairs really. I am still in engineering myself but i know my classmates (and who are still friends today) earn minimum 2x more doing non engineering professional roles. And they dont have to work any harder or smarter. Granted a few really lament not being able to be an engineer, but at the end of the day you cant pay your way with job satisfaction and love for engineering.

Let’s also remember red bull won nothing when they didn’t have a reliable Honda engine, the combination of a Newey chassis and aero a Honda engine and a top 6 driver gave them success. Remove Newey and no success I’m afraid. Remove the present driver and any one of the top six drivers could sit in that car and win. Newey can’t be replaced, Honda can’t be replaced that’s fact and why he’s the best design engineer ever to put a F1 car on a track. Hondas use of chrome linings and split turbos was the key factor to giving Red bull the 1 sec a lap advantage that has given them the edge, coupled with the designed rule change brought in to break up Mercedes dominance in f1.

Totally agree with everything you said (can’t see how anyone who understands F1 beyond a very basic level could disagree). That said, I do think Newey brings something more to the teams he’s been involved in than that of an individual contributor in the aero dept of an F1 team. I think there was a song that had the lyric “we saw the crescent, but you saw the whole of the moon” that captures what makes him so special in understanding how to translate changing FIA rules/regulations into a championship winning car.

All very true, but if you look at his career moves between teams, when he moves, sooner or later success moves with him. The change in fortunes between ‘97 and ‘98 for Williams and McLaren is probably the clearest example, but it’s also hard to deny that his move to Red Bull helped them climb from the ashes of Jaguar to a title-winning outfit in just six years.

There is nothing to be fair about, I suppose you would say that Alex Fegusson did not win all those troffies because he wasnt the kicking the ball. Just random coincidence that every team he joined started winning soon after he joined including nascar. Its so pathetic to try to downplay the impact that he had on the sport.

It’s a team effort…. But it’s not coincidence that it’s been in one of his cars more than anyone else’s.

@@sultanoftippoo3857 I agree. I think that Adrian Newey did benefit a lot from the era when started working in autosport. In 1980 the concept for racecars was ground effect. He designed March groundeffect Indycars that won 2 championships and twice the Indy 500. After he designed those cars he worked with the drivers as their race engineer due to how small teams were back then. Newey worked as an aerodynamicist, designer, race engineer, TD and CTO. He designed IMSA Sportcars, Indycars, F2 and F1 cars but also Aston Martin's hypercar Valkyrie and works on the RB17 trackcar.
