F1 overtaking weapon - Drag Reduction System (DRS)

Спорт

I am fascinated by the DRS introduced in F1 since 2011. So I thought of putting up some videos of F1 drivers using DRS to overtake others. Is not only the technology, but also the drivers carefully planned strategy and extreme precision execution on the DRS in overtaking.
I do not claim these videos, below are the original link to the videos that I have put together.

+Deathkills Machinegun the point of drs is to have more overtakes, so it's only used by the attacker. In 2010, fernando alonso was in abu dhabi stuck a whole race behind vitaly petrov which costed him the world championship. If drs was used back then already, he would have passed him much earlier and the wc would have been him. I hope you get then meaning now

The idea is that the car in front causes a massive downforce reduction from the dirty air effect, so the drs is meant to be compensating partially for that big disadvantage the trailing car has. Without drs in some cases if the front car doesn't make mistakes then the following car would need to be capable of 2s faster laptimes to have a chance of passing. Otherwise they'd never get close enough due to the downforce reduction.

    DRS is wack

DRS is shit and a shame for F1 and motorsport, only adding weights for race winners is even worse. Both are only ways to get fake overtaking action, creating an artificial disadvantage for one driver, who remains defenseless against other.

If we didn't have DRS then people would barely be able to overtake at all, period. DRS is NOT used to make overtaking directly easier and artificial, it is there to make it fairer for the chasing car. The reason why F1 even has DRS is because the dirty air generated by a leading car causes a great disadvantage to the car behind it, since current F1 cars are designed to only generate downforce in clean, undisrupted air. This is why, during the early to mid 2000s, when the aero of the cars got more complex, there were a lot less overtakes. DRS was designed with the express purpose to mitigate the effects of dirty air, and give the chasing car a fighting chance. It's not a perfect system by any means, but at least take the time to research a topic before you shit all over it and call it an "artificial" advantage.

@@xdr.77sohail13 I have seen every single F1 race since 1998, so I don´t need you to explain me DRS origins or what happened at mid 2000's. I don´t need to research, because I already know everything. I saw it. I know about dirty air, I know about overtaking difficulty improved due to grooved tires and bigger upper aero grip depeandance. It is a huge problem (thinking that overtaking is hard and always have been, specially in F1, overtaking with a winged openwheel car will always be harder than with a touring car) and it needs a solution, but the ultimate solution, and DRS is not. The solution is improving mechanical grip (from tires and suspension) and reducing aero depeandance, specially upper aero (wings). And to get that you need a huge regulation remake. They tried in 2009, we will see what happens in 2021. I wish they will get a good job. At the moment FIA people have said that if new rules are succesful, they will think about DRS dissapearance. And they will because it is shit and everybody know that. Any real F1 fan can accept DRS as something "good". It is artificial, it's an overtaking assist, there is not fight, most DRS overtakes are completed on the straight, before the braking point, there is not spectacle. Drivers don't even try to defend because they know they can't against a chasing car 15- 20 km/h faster. DRS breaks the most basic idea of equality because is not something natural as slipstreaming. Its effects depends on where some guy has decided to locate the detection point and the DRS point. Without DRS overtaking was almost impossible. With DRS is too easy. With "puss to pass" sistems like in Indycar you can use it to attack or to defend. Fine. But DRS is only to attack. Leading car can´t use it to defend. That's unfair. But a free use, only to reach higher speed on straights would be a great idea. The proper way to solve the problem is making technical changes to get cars that allow to run closer to another, even if it is a similar performance car. DRS doesn't do that. It only creates an artificial, false performance difference to get the overtake easier. That's would be the key: similar performance cars that could run close. That will give real fight, and real racing. DRS is a botched job.

@@bmwpower9674 your argument is nonsense red herring. We're talking about reality, not a hypothetical world where the cars are designed differently. You can't move the goalposts and say "I'm right because if they changed the rules completely to reduce the aero problem I'd be right".
