Wish someone could add video of the pre-race in English.. I remember them asking Hakkinen what he'll do differently. He replied something like "For every corner, I'll brake 2 meters later" ... And Schumacher interrupts and said, "If he brakes 2 meters later, I'll brake 3 meters later!" ... damn I miss those days.

idk being able to setup the cars for quali & then the race was just another layer of separation between the teams, par ferme has actually been a great addition, don't mind the sprint races but they're not my favorite either however, being able to put on a fresh set of some other tyre for the start of the race now has worked out really well imo. ik your comment's quite old but it's pretty relieving looking back at all the stupidity that was being proposed towards the end of Ecclestone's ownership of formula 1, tbh I think f1 right now is in the best place it has been for a while, if the FIA handles 23-24's regulations decently they could cap the performance enough to see 3-4 drivers in contention for a WDC. plus the new fuel has made the turbo hybrids sound really good, almost sounds like a blown diffuser imo.

@@hydraz1443 faster because of slicks and aero and drs in specific situations. It just looks like a videogame. Flying glued to the ground. These ones, V10, look faster also because they were more challenging to drive on the limit, no gadgets. They were made to attack all the time. To sprint. F1 was made for that. Not this overly technological crap. Not to manage tyres and fuel. Basically, good drivers had balls. They were real drivers.

Without a doubt it is a great season so far. But what I meant by my comment, is that the Mika & Schumi rivalry was great because it spanned over a number of seasons, and there was also the rivalry between McLaren and Ferrari. Lewis and Nico's rivalry this year has been brilliant & tense to watch, which is fantastic. But will it go into the next year, and the year after that, and possibly beyond? I doubt it. But I could be wrong, only time will tell... :)

Brendan McCallion I hope it will go on to future years, but Vettel V Alonso with RB and Ferrari would've been great if that was as close as Hakin V Schumi. What we really need is aggressive cars raging down the track again. Hamilton made a brilliant overtake in Japan, but that's nothing like 9 years ago...

***** Not saying it is easy, just saying if you keep putting in good laps then the lap times will naturally improve. I have done it myself on simulators and the rubbering up of tracks as well as experience are well known concepts. If you keep repeating something, you get better at it and if the track becomes more grippy, you can go faster.

My take on Formula 1 then, and now, in terms of cars and driver ability: Today, track records are being broken left right and centre - almost every circuit we go to now, the lap record is broken. As great as that sounds, it's bullshit - the drivers aren't getting quicker, or have more ability, it's because the CARS are giving more grip - the tyres are slick (as opposed to grooved) and the aero is on another planet in comparison to 2001. When you take away a driver's need to modulate the throttle through a high speed corner, instead all he need do is keep his foot planted and turn the wheel, you take away individual skill, and reduce the proportion of a driver's lap time that reflects his ability. The RACING, however, I don't think has suffered much, or if anything has improved a little. Years ago, many races were very processional, today however, I think there's a lot of great close racing that people really do overlook.

Save tyres , save engine. Fuck that modern rubbish. This qualifying sesh had you on the edge of your seat. The only driver that shows passion nowadays is Verstappen. Even he will be reigned in by rules , regs , sponsors. Sport , not just F1 is dead and money in one form or another killed it.

From all engine sound than lisent in my life how ex F1 fan 1997-2013 the Mercedes Benz engine V10 from the mp4/15 Maclaren is the best engine sound of all times . No for be a fan of mika and Maclaren I said this because I listen every engine sound of all teams since Ferrari , Cosworth , Honda , Lamborghini , Yamaha , Matra , etc And for be honest Each engine has its own, but none compares to the sound as peculiar and futuristic as the Maclaren mp4 / 15 and mp4 / 16, and out-of-series sound that was completely distinguished from the rest, which marked a remarkable and unique difference in F1 history

In my opinion this was, by far, the best qualifying format of them all. One hour, four sets of fresh, sticky tyres, just do whatever you want.

No Bullshit DRS, KERS, or ERS, just an angry roaring V10 engine and the drivers' skills behind them. It's either you have the skills to drive that beast or you don't, simple as that.

That doesn't make any sense. If anything KERS and DRS made it harder to drive because you had to use them at the right time or you won't get the best out of them and the current cars have way more torque to manage than these did, plus no traction control and more volatile tyres. Today's cars are harder to drive than these (although they are less of an assault in terms of G-force through the corner). So pretty much I could rewrite your statement for today's cars: No bullshit traction control, ABS or insane downforce, just 500lbs/ft torque to the rear wheels and the driver's skills behind them. It's either you have the skills to drive that beast or you don't, simple as that.

***** Banned but not possible to regulate properly. I don't know if these drivers were using them or not. I was talking about this period in general though not particularly this race or year. 2004 would apply to what I said more than this year I suppose. Regardless, these cars require no more skill to drive than today's cars. If you want cars that require more skill (debatable, could just be regarded as different skill) you have to go back to the 80s. I don't see what technology helps with the torque. We have seen lots more oversteer and people spinning out this year.

I want to know how come this myth on these days that the V10 era was the hardest or the best era of F1. Is it come from a Playstation era when these some V10 fanboys were kids when they started to watch F1? When FIA banned some aids for 1994, they did banned all the assistances that these cars had. Fly-by-wire and eletronic pedals, computers correcting any inconsistence of the pilots on the inputs, eletronic differs, stability controll acting on brake, too many hidden assistances. You can see on this video that both pilots are pushing too the limits. But this only possible because the cars were super stables. When the FIA cant to do proper inspection to find traction controll, they put the TC again for 2001 season, the cars become more easier. I agree the FROOB2002, the 80's cars were the hardest. It was in a era that engines was not so linear on make power, and the technology to assist driver couldnt work properly. The first traction controlls was totally crap, reducing the speed of the car. The first active suspension on 80's made the cars faster, but harder to controll. When the you can see tech on final of 80's and beggining of the 90's, the things not work so well. When you see a "pure" car from 2000 season, you are not really see a pure car, you see a car with very hidden tecnologies everywhere making the car super stable, and the pilots can drive on the limit lap after the lap because they gain confidence and trust more on the car, the car can do these fast corners, I can put pedal full on the throtle, they are simple not find any strugling when they are driving. Compare, for example, Michael Schumacher laps from 96 and 97 season to this. When 2004 season become, MS were super smotth, super stable. On 96 season, he strugle with the car everywhere.

This was the greatest qualifying session I ever saw. I remember just being totally hypnotized by the whole thing. And boy did they ever have a go at it. Formula 1 today is a joke by comparison. These were two racing legends, just slogging it out for all they were worth. I remember Murray and Martin's commentary and Martin was just laughing at the end. I still have this taped on a video cassette somewhere with the original ITV commentary. Those were the days...

At 13:12, Mika lost a little time from traffic. If he would have a had a clear track the whole way, he probably would have taken pole. Also, at 14:07, the Mercedes engine does a huge hiccup which causes the car to twitch in a weird way.

+LuxeXx Not sure the hiccup isn't just him having a traction moment coming out of that hairpin. Lose traction wheels spin up, engine revs high. Engine hiccup is just a symptom of the mistake. Natural when pushing that hard.

  • @BollocksUtwat

LuxeXx Coming out of that corner is probably I'm guessing 2nd gear lowish revs so the torque would probably be coming on pretty strong as soon as he puts down the power and since he is coming out of the chicane with weight moving to his right but having to immediately accelerate into a turn to the right which means moving the weight to the left its all kinds of drama waiting to happen, especially when pushing since exiting a slow corner onto the main straight well is the difference between a good lap or an average one. That hiccup probably cost at least 1-2 tenths.

I mean the fact the cars had a screaming V10 and the cars actually looked wonderful, free flowing and, you had vintage Michael Schumacher and Mika dueling it out for pole. Today's F1, while I enjoy Fernando Alonso very much and thought his 2012 season was like classic Schumacher of 1990s, the cars lack the brute force and speed of the 2000-2005 cars. I also believe if you put Michael and Mika in their primes aganist today's grid, they would be quite near or exceed the level of Fernando Alonso.

It somehow died in 2009 when you have the new aero rules came but 2014 onwards it completely shattered the soul of the sport unfortunately. The v6 engines are an engineering marvel but the sound they produce is just something that I find it really dull.
