Mercedes reliability advantage in late turbo hybrid era meant their overtake mode's were much more free to extract power from them. to the point Fia targeted them directly. Now engine must be tuned to race spec. only battery boost is allowed

Overtake mode is battery boost. The reason overtake mode isn't used as often is because it drains the battery much more quickly. In qualifying, the deployment the electrical boost (both MGU-H and K) is pre-mapped to deliver boost in certain section of the track. This is done to ensure battery last the entire lap. Overtake mode drains it in like, half a lap or less at full power, which is useless in qualifying. What you're thinking of is fuel trim. And that's called engine modes. Engine modes/fuel trim and still be changed during a race in case oddities in the engine sensors are detected but it should not increase power, merely change driveability.

Overtake deploys the max amount of electric power, it doesn't alter the engine power, that is done by engine mapping and engine mapping is determined on a race to race basis or if there is a substantial amount of wear or heat in the engine.

Doesn't overtake mode allow the exhaust gases to bypass thebturbo through the wastegate, so that there's lesser back pressure meaning maximum ICE power? It also means the MGU-H will have to spin the turbo.

Since 2022 season the party modes and overtake modes, ala merc 2021 interlagos monster is gone. They have to stick with a power mode on the icu. If it is for a whole weekend or they have some leaniency and need to keep that mode for a certain majority. The electric motors they have full control over which mode and power in the race but it is not as powerful as icu+ electrics in a overtake party mode. And less engines total also limits the use of party mode

My point is that lapping ~5 seconds or more slower in the race than in quali is just ridiculous 🤷🏿

@@Jared_Barnesovertake does not always stay on. bottas didnt manually turn overtake off during his battle with hartley. when he had to brake going up eau rouge the overtake was automatically turned off.

I would assume if you're not 100% on throttle it deactivates itself?

If I'm not wrong, pretty much all F1 teams use a hold button for overtake rather than a toggle.

What about press and hold, does it give out more power or it's just a separate way of activating by various teams?

Pretty sure most PTP (push to pass) buttons in various race cars are hold buttons instead of toggle buttons. This ensures that the driver doesn't "misclick" and accidentally keep the ERS on full deploy. Race cars that have a PTP system usually have it on an ERS (hybrid) system - it controls the electrical output of the ERS system, it doesn't boost the ICE power as the poster claims.

Each team has its own OT button setup, so it differs by car. At least for McLaren, a single press will override the energy harvesting settings of the hybrid system, while a longer press will deploy energy and increase speed.
