ABOUT F.W. DE KLERK: Frederik Willem de Klerk (born 18 March 1936), was the seventh and last State President of apartheid-era South Africa, serving from September 1989 to May 1994. De Klerk was also leader of the National Party (which later became the New National Party) from February 1989 to September 1997.
De Klerk brokered the end of apartheid, South Africa's racial segregation policy, and supported the transformation of South Africa into a multi-racial democracy by entering into the negotiations that resulted in all citizens, including the country's black majority, having equal voting and other rights. He won the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize in 1991, the Prince of Asturias Award in 1992 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 along with Nelson Mandela for his role in the ending of apartheid.
He was one of the deputy presidents of South Africa during the presidency of Nelson Mandela until 1996, the last white person to hold the position to date. In 1997 he retired from active politics. As of 2011 he remains active as a lecturer internationally.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has been established for 189 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.

What African country in history that was previously oppressed and had gained democracy after the hard fight . And after that introduced land reclamation programs. Is there any success stories whereby social economic growth nd equality had blossomed from its lands thereafter?

This is just one of those things people say to distract the audience from the question they are supposed to answer. The parameters are South Africa, not Africa. South Africa differs from the rest of Africa because trade is strong, our biggest trade partners include both the EU and the US. Both of which have made substantial investments in the country. Foreign direct investment is the reason we entered the world stage, not because white people were allowed to continue inhabiting lands that were stolen from us. You're clearly out of your depth here. Correlation(between white people holding onto the land of black people), as many would know, does not imply causation(that white people not giving back black land causes economic prosperity). So don't clutch onto straws. I could, using the same twisted logic, retort that any African country that does not have a Desmond Tutu will not be successful.

I give up. Thank you for the debate but clearly you are held tight to your narrative and do not know that COMPROMISE is an important factor in a modern day DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY.And the funny thing is I'm not white and I'm trying to be objective as I can possibly be. Oh well I guess one day when we learn to listen, understand and be patient then we can sit down and talk again. I would really love to debate in such a manner.

The courts in South Africa have dealt with this so called “new discrimination” by differentiating between fair and unfair discrimination. Fair discrimination is necessary to undo the injustices that this man was partly responsible for creating.

There is no such thing as "fair discrimination". And you can't fight racism with racism. And the coloured people that he was talking about, that are discriminated against (in their own backyard), how do you justify that? How is that "fair discrimination"? Imagine going to the Eastern Cape or Kwa-Zulu Natal (or any province where the majority are black people) and say that "Here are too many black people doing this xxx job, we need to put more coloureds in that position or more Indians (or dare I say whites)". It doesn't sound right, does it? At the end of the day it hurts black people too. I so badly want to see this country prosper. Good luck to you, my friend. *Create jobs, don't take jobs.*

The Equality clause in the Constitution differentiates between fair and unfair discrimination. So according to the law there is such a thing as “fair discrimination”. The reason for this is so that we can achieve a truly equal society. You’ll find that in many cases affirmative action or “fair discrimination” laws and policies, the law defines the word ”black” to include not only the indigenous black people, but also coloured people and Indians. The law protects us all, coloured people included. So, to answer your question, I do not think coloured people being discriminated against is “fair discrimination” and the law doesn’t either. What Mr De Klerk tried to do, was take a policy he does not understand and try to make it fit his narrative. It’s been a while since I watched the video, but I doubt the accuracy of the examples he gave. That might have something to do with the fact that I don’t trust apartheid apologists. But if they are accurate, those people have recourse, because, as I said before, the law protects us all.

@@chikomborerogudlanga8090 Laws can be discriminatory (I mean .... Apartheid was the law). And to say there is fair discrimination so that we can achieve a truly equal society is contradictory. A truly equal society would be a society where you are judged solely on your character or you as an individual and not as a group. You get the job based on how qualified you are and not because of your colour. And affirmative action is racist and a lot of non-white people (especially in America) agree that it is. It creates a hierarchy of oppression. Black people get primary preferential treatment and everyone else, in hierarchical manner based on pigment and also gender, get what's left over. And black people shouldn't just take hand outs like that. They aren't charity cases. They are smart, talented and hardworking enough to make it. It's disgustingly degrading. I also find it hypocritical of South Africa to have such laws in place to find a "truly equal society" when they do nothing about the farm murders of white people. Just earlier in this week there were more farm murders, but nothing is being done about it. And there are a lot of poor, underpriviled white people in this country, who not only have to deal with these circumstances, but also now with the government discriminating against them. It's no surprise why a lot of people (white, black, coloured, indian, ...) are moving to other countries, because SA is on route to be the next modern day Zimbabwe. It's a damn shame. I'm coloured btw.
