1:13 I haven't seen the score of this work, but this phrase always gets to me. Did Mendelssohn actually write it that the first play through the high note is articulated cleanly and the second time there is a slight glissando leading to it? I always hear it that way, even Rostropovich and Starker. If that was Mendelssohn's intention, it's genius. If it is an interpretation, it's genius performance. This is an exciting piece, as joyful as anything Mendelssohn ever wrote, with the false cadences leading development in unexpected directions to the listeners' delight. Bravo, Maestros!

There's no gliss written on the score. It's interpretation!

This Sonata is another example of "95%-based-on-the-piano-part" piece. So, I think it should be called "Sonata for Piano and Cello" (same as Beethoven's Sonatas are named). I played this piece a couple years ago. Can't say I enjoyed though... The amount of notes in piano part is enormous but the "content" is little bit empty, to my taste.

it's a virtuoso work for the piano -- the 'cello part is hardly more than accompaniment.
