F-Log vs F-Log 2 - Fujifilm XH2s

F-Log vs F Log 2 - Fujifilm XH2s
Exposed at 0.3-1 stop overexposed. Not a super technical test just wanted to see how the different log profiles looked against each other at their base iso values with a Rec.709 conversion.

    I just got my XH2s. I've always loved Eterna. I'm not sure about my color grading skills but I'll give F-Log 2 a go. Thanks for the overexpose the F-Logs tip. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks. As an amateur it helps me learn more quickly to see practical comparisons. To me it looked like Flog2 seemed nicer when the scene has more contrast or deeper shadows. I have the X-H2. As you probably knew already, the X-H2 has base ISO 500 for Flog and 1000 for Flog2. I'll be using it more often as I recently learned the hard way by some blown out highlights taking some of the quality out of what I had filmed.

    Hey man, thanks for putting in the work. Was on the fence of using F-Log 2, probably going to give it a try now. Like the real world approach, makes more sense than just technical stuff. Thanks!

    I also noticed the increased saturation of F-log 2 straight away. The new profile has a kind of colorful, ‘silky’ look. Everything rolls of fairly smoothly and is rich in color. I love that vibe!

    I have found it harder to grade over exposed flog2 compared to under exposed flog2, but you're right the low end noise in flog2 is pretty prevalent so it makes sense to error high. It's funny to me that I came to the same conclusion on this before watching your video, that being flog1 is much more suited for low light because the noise floor and flog2 for bright scenes and high dynamic range.

    I shoot F-Log2 regardless of the lighting. Noise can be repaired, (I’ve had no problems underexposing for hightlights) but the 14bit readout of F-Log2 in the XH2s is irreplaceable.

    I think you switched clips on the first test in the green field at 2:15. The f-log2 is probably on the right, and not on the left? The left one looks horrible, it has a magenta cast to it. Hardly a better look than f-log, if it's correct.

    Great video! May I ask if you have any tips regarding Zebra levels for skin tones in F-log2? When I set mine to 70% like I used to on F-log, they are way overexposed!

  • @lexgraham

    @lexgraham

    Thanks. I started using false color in a monitor to properly expose. I feel like it’s the best way. But if I had to use zebras, dial in like 60%

  • @staiain
    @staiain4 ай бұрын

    I just can't decide between the two, f-log2 seems to fare better with very saturated and bright sunlit colours and for the most part they look somewhat accurate, although slightly undersaturated sometimes, while far cleaner noise wise, f-log 1 seems to clip some colours even below 70% zebras and i've seen some wildlife footage i've done in f-log1 be mildly ruined due to being slightly overexposed and shifted colours. But also while being at risk of overexposure, f-log 1 in perfect conditions aree so high quality a still frame can pass as a photo in social media, while f-log2 noise is visible often even when at lower resolutions.

    I’d say if you want the most control over the image for post, go with F-Log 2 and stay at the the 1st and 2nd base ISO’s 1250 & 3200 as much as you can
