Recently some F-35C Lightnings have been spotted with chrome or mirror like coatings. This is apparently a continuing trend as F-22 Raptors and F-117 Nighthawks have also been spotted with these finishes. Could this be the future of air combat? We will take a look at what this could mean, why the F-35 is becoming the fighter of the West, and what other upgrades are in store for the F-35 Lightning.

    People don't understand what that cost per flight hour really means. The F-35 has systems and sensors built into it that 4th generation jets don't, the cost of maintenence on these systems are included in the cost per hour. The F-35 has the helmet, a built in targeting system whereas a 4th generation needs multimillion dollar targeting pods that also need maintenence but since its not part of the aircraft that cost isn't included in the cost per hour for that 4th generation jet. The F-35 has sensors all over it and the electronics that go with them and that requires maintenence, a 4th generation don't. A F-35A is cheaper than almost every 4+ generation jet being produced at 77 million each. The cost per hour has dropped considerably and is expected to drop a lot more.

    @D these are valid criticisms but the F35 was literally not meant to be a bomber or air superiority fighter. It’s filling the niche between both of those and I’d say it does it quite well. The US already have other aircraft and future aircraft that will perform the functions of a bomber or air superiority role far better than an aircraft that was designed not to be either. The F15 is not going to be performing the same functions as the F35 either. If you think the US is drinking the koolaid and wasting money, how do you explain all the other countries lining up to buy the F35 plane? They are all far stingier with their military procurement than the US is.

    There's been a bunch of talk recently about the development of ceramic RAM. This is almost certainly it. It's likely a dichroic, multi-layer coating and has all the benefits that everyone here has already guessed - protection from IR (which includes lasers), a claimed 80% radio wavelength absorption (not sure how that compares to the existing stealth coatings), lack of silhouette in a bright sky, much higher temperature allowance, and likely much lower lifetime costs.

    Another aspect of this is that the F-22 and F-35 are limited in their supersonic performance by the fact that supersonic speed damages their RAM coating. If this is the ceramic RAM that it seems to be, this will allow for continuous supersonic flight without any damage to the RAM. When combined with the new adaptive cycle engines, this will make the Raptor even more deadly than before and make the Lightning II even more powerful than it already is. Additionally, the fact that it’s being applied to even the F-117 may hint that they may come out of retirement and used to increase the existing number of stealth planes available.

    If these coatings are quasicrystal antenna arrays, as I suspect, they are able to shape the electromagnetic signature of the aircraft to whatever you want. The craft will be truly be invisible or can transform into anything you want. The limitation might well be that the aircraft has to generate a very large amount of electrical energy to power the array, hence the stealth fighters being used because they have that capability.

    @KennyTheB Жыл бұрын

    It's definitely relative to suppressing the aircraft's IR signature. if you've ever had to use a FLIR camera before, one of the big thing you'll notice is that there's a few different metals that reflect IR light rather than emit it, even if they're hundreds of degrees hotter than their surroundings. I worked around some high temp kilns for a few years that had steel banding around the refractory fire bricks. When the kiln was firing, those bands would get up to a couple to a few hundred degrees, but they'd still look like they were at ambient on a FLIR. They acted like a mirror in the infrared. You could see your own thermal reflection in the camera when directly facing them, with spot metering identifying that reflection as being ~body temp instead of a couple/few hundred degrees. If the stealth coating they're using (or still developing) in this case is transparent in the infrared, it's easy to see how a thermally reflective layer would be advantageous. Things like IR-guided anti-air missiles would have a very difficult time acquiring a lock from anything other than some limited rear-aspect angles. (Think looking down the engine nozzles.) While that's a huge plus, if notably reducing the aircraft's thermal signature is indeed the reason why those aircraft looked chromed out, then I'd imagine the main advantage they're after likely has more to do avoiding early detection. Essentially the same reason why they're stealth to begin with, just with another light spectrum in mind. It's probably not a coincidence that this became a thing not long after China claimed to have developed a thermal search-and-track system geared towards aircraft detection. (They claim it can see stealth aircraft up to 300 km away, but whether or not that's actually true is anyone's guess.)

Obviously it's longer term purpose is NGAD but even transitioning to NGAD you will need proven / tested technology and with China pressing forward with technology - the US knows it must ramp up as quickly as possible.

    It's probably as smooth as glass. Less drag and or friction possibly increasing speeda little, slight improvement on range maybe, reducing heat signature and it would probably be hard for the naked eye to spot when up high. It simply mirrors the sky. Just few guesses... it could possibly help against laser weapons well.

    I remember back in '97 either Pop. Mech, or Pop. Science, there was a story in it about this type of coating being tested on A/C. what it was supposed to do is put a mirror image of whatever you're looking at, from whatever is behind it,, so, if you're looking from below, and the sky is above, you won't really see the jet, you'll catch something moving, but you'll see the blue sky, with clouds or whatever. On the other hand, if you're an Adversary pilot, and you're looking DOWN,, you'll see some movement of ? But you'll just see whatever is underneath... desert, or snowy mountains, or whatever. I remember this from the magazine back in '97.

    Maybe - just speculating here - the chrome-like coating A. decreases air resistance at lower altitudes ever so slightly, B. is more reistant to higher speeds (something which the orginal coating was said to having trouble with) and C. is more durable, reducing the man hours required to maintain the orginal coating and thus reducing cost? On a side note, I wish the USAF would be investigating a non-folding wing the size of the C-model. The C appears to be more maneuverable and is known for having longer reach. Together with the GE XA-100 variable bypass/adaptive cycle engine and the new coating (if it will stand the rigourous testing), who knows what that would do for the A-model. A last thing I've been thinking about is a ventral enclosed weapons container (EWC) or (semi) conformal fuel tank the likes of which was envisaged for the Super Hornet. Not having to carry AIM-9X's or payload similar in size externally might increase payload-range perfomance further. But I have no idea if that would match with the arrangement of maintenance access panels or interfere with the doors of the semi-lateral weapon bays.

    Literally lasering the enemy away, given powerful and reliable enough laser weapons, would practically render conventional canons obsolete, making it much easier to actually hit what's in sight with the only limitations to ammunition being power generation and thus, fuel. If used on swivelling, large range of motion turrets, you'll end up with the closest thing to ideal missile defense.

    So if they are "shiny" to reduce infrared signatures, the same coating that reflects heat outward, can and will retain and reflect inward the very heat they are trying to destroy. I can see the coating might make them slicker and a little bit faster than the usual coating

    This is why the fuel is pumped through the aircraft skin, and specifically designed to absorb heat, and operate at a higher temp. They pull the heat from the a/c into the fuel, and chunk it right out the back. What you're starting to see now, is that this a/c was indeed designed to accommodate these technologies from the beginning.

    I do not think it is connected to IR signature size as the engine will still be the major contributor to that. Chrome or polished aluminum is surely to reflect something like Radar or light. Maybe its not "Chrome" or Aluminum but a better stealth coating that just happens to be very shiny? Another thought is to do with an Ionised aero sheath could it need a very smooth conductive surface to control it at a level not seen before, supposed to be amazing what you can do with an ionised bubble around and aircraft, Much reduced drag, less heating, total "absorbtion" of, or reflection of EM waves. Somepeople even say you can get propulsion out of it. Anyway they are not doing it for fun, hopefully find out one day.

    Well, the legion system developed for the F15EX is suppose to be an advanced IRST system. It is also known as the stealth equalizer. If you can diminish the effectiveness of the more advanced IRST systems then you have again established the future value of stealth. The adaptive jet engine has been years in development and while I believe it can be achieved; the last I heard it may difficult to achieve than anticipated. Hopefully not more difficult than the US Air Force and possibly Navy anticipated. Tailless fighters have been researched in the past but there have been many accidents of tailless fighters in the past. All of this is being added into the 6th generation fighters which is about 3 R&D programs being added into one new aircraft. It is nice that some of these features are being tried in the F35 and F22 first.

    It’s a speculation on my part, but it could be a film coating that makes the plane visually disappear. This type of technology has been in the works for some time. On the other hand, it could be a test for ground based radar or airborne radar detection. It’s only speculation.
