My dad and grandfather both flew the F-16 during their 20+ years of service in the Air Force. Its name is the Fighting Falcon, but every fighter pilot who fly it call it the Viper. All variants of the F-16 (A, B, C, D, V) are all referred to as the Viper. Just as the A-10 Warthog is called the Hog, or the B-52 Stratofortress is called the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker). I am currently a student/cadet at the US Air Force Academy with the hopes and dreams of one day getting to strap into the mighty Viper to complete three generations of Viper drivers.

Fun fact to anyone that doesn't know, the blue stripe you see on the missile means its whats called a CATM-9. CATM stands for Captive Air Training Guided Missile. CATM-9s are basically a training version of the AIM-9 (AIM stands for Air Intercept Guided Missile) that has all the electronics and the seeker head so pilots can practice with the missile, but the warhead and rocket motor are inert so it cant shoot and there's not any danger of the pilot accidentally firing the missile at anyone in a training excersize.

  • @waynefletcher9884

Nr1from1978 it actually depends on the stigma! FYI you do have to begin with perfect vision and if you don’t have perfect vision they’ll allow you to hand corrective surgery prior to beginning pilot training. Also if your a pilot then if it declines you can opt to hand corrective surgery. He could have been between surgeries. By the way, it’s impossible to fly F22’s on carriers for I main reason... the landing gear is not robust enough and the F22 sits too low to the ground. Also the F35 is as stealthy and has super Cruise at Mach 1.2. It’s computers is actually slightly better than the F22. There’s also 3 variants of F35’s Alphas which are flown by the Air Force, Bravos which is VSTOL flown by the Marines and therefore is better suited for Marine Corp Landing Helo Assault Short deck carriers which the F22’s can’t fly VSTOL. And the Charlie’s which is flown by the Navy and has larger wings. The F35 has done 2 things the F22 hasn’t done. (1) it has a 20-0 kill ratio in Red Flag which has never been done by any other aircraft in history. (2) the Israelis have successfully shot down 2 MIG’s in combat flying F35’s! I was a former combat FDC supporting FAC during my 11 years in the Marine Corps

None of this information is true. In the US air force, navy and marines you can get a wavier as long as your vision can be corrected 20/20. Also Nr1from1978, the F-35 is a AWESOME aircraft and has more capabilities than the F-22. The F-22 is pure air superiority fighter, while the F-35 is a multi role fighter that acts as a mini AWACS. The F-35 can easily defeat any 4th gen fighter.

From my experience working on the Douglas A-4, drop tanks if jettisoned did not simply 'fall away." There was a explosive piston that drove the tank clear of the aircraft. A "remove before flight" pin did not allow the tank to be accidentally jettisoned on the deck.

@Bobby Brady the cartridges are in the bottom of the pylon which blows the hooks open and the tank free falls. The pylon is bolted to the wing and stays with the aircraft. But when there installed on the aircraft, there installed as one unit.

They have cartridges which blow the hooks open and the tank free falls. And they do have remove before flight pins so the tanks dont accidentally get blown off during maintenance.

@Bobby Brady yeah maybe you're right. For the life of me I cant remember now. Maybe I'm thinking of the centerline tank. I spent most my time in the Aggressor squadron and we never put wing tanks on them. I remember raising the tank, tightening the top bolt on the wing, and tightening the aft bolt. Did the wing tanks have the "Mickey Mouse ears" or the centerline?
