CJ Pony Parts wants you to know that oil separators are an excellent preventive maintenance and they're especially important on an EcoBoost! Here's some reasons why...
This direct-fit UPR four inch Mega Catch Can oil separator kit is going to keep destructive oil vapors out of your 2011-2014 F-150 EcoBoost PCV system intake. When oil vapors get into your PCV system intake, you're going to experience lower performance, nasty build up in your underhood presentation and even possible engine damage. That's why this kit includes a Mega Catch Can to collect all that damaging oil vapor and keep you cruising with long lasting protection.

Even though I was unable to get answers to some questions that are very important to me about its operation of this can from idle to WOT from UPR , I bought and installed this expensive rascal last year because I knew that I needed one. This is not what I wanted to use, but because of physical limitations I have , it was easier to install. The setup that I wanted to use was the same can with the same install for the intake side, but for the the turbo side, a hose is ran straight from the catch can to the turbo inlet. The WOT factory hose was eliminated and the fitting in the valve cover was capped. Then a fresh air hose from the airbox to a CSS mounted in the oil fill cap was installed. Everything about this made sense to me as far as assuring that all of the crankcase air should be pulled from the passenger side to the catch can under all operating conditions. This is especially important to me since I tow a camper and most all driving will be under boost. This now brings me to my main question about the catch can that you installed in the video. When under boost without any alteration, the turbo is pulling bad crank air straight out of the valve cover. Since this installation runs a new hose from the catch can to the driver side and is now simply providing a tee'd connection between the CSS in the valve cover and the turbo inlet, what happens during boost? Since the turbo is providing the vacuum for the catch can AND pulling air straight from the valve cover at the same time, how effective, if at all is the can in this situation? I am not a rocket scientist so I am hoping that there are some dynamics or pressure differentials occurring that allow the can to function and limiting whats pulled thru the CSS. But looking at it straight forward, it seems to me that the majority of crank air will still be pulled from the CSS in the valve cover to the turbo. Sorry for the long post, but I hope you can give me some answers that will hopefully but my mind at ease. Thanks

Okay so from the time this video was made the parts have changed somewhat. The arrows on the hoses which show flow direction are only on two. The Vent cap does install with a snap fit, it does not require the removal of the barb on the valve cover side. The connecters on the third hose are identical so I would assume direction does not matter. Great fit, works like a champ.

I purchased this UPR Satin 4"Mega Catch Can,($400) took it over a week to get to me. I went to install it and after taking all the original hoses off I found out they sent me the wrong UPR Clean Side Separator. This was a weekend job and of course their office was closed. Talk about being pissed! Now it will be another week before getting the right piece I'm sure.

Canadians beware! Put one in a couple of years ago, loved it. Went on a long drive in -40C (northern Alberta) and the hoses froze up. Pressured up the crank and pushed all the oil out through the drivers side turbo, then the cats and out. Mechanic couldn't figure out what happened. He replaced the oil and said it was good to go. Hit the highway tons of smoke, O2 sensors toast, cats toast. Replaced. 4 months later, drivers turbo started squealing, then engine knock... Bearing spun somewhere and had to replace engine and turbo. $15,000+ and I am 90% sure this is why.

Works like a champ! I tell everyone I see driving an Eco to get one. I mounted mine a little differently and it made the relocation of the sensor easier. All I had to do was loosen the factory horn bracket and move it to the right. The stuff that comes out looks like spoiled salad dressing.

I don’t recommend bottom draining catch cans as convenient as it sounds. From years of emptying catch cans I know for a fact that it’s better to have a normal can that screws off and you can clean the inside, sometimes the gunk is too thick to just drain with gravity.

I contacted UPR and they said odors like this are typical of all catch can installations. I don't buy that. All connection's having O-ring seals, I don't understand where the odor is coming from. On the UPR website it has the options of billet check valve's. Is this something that is necessary? I'm curious if it comes with non billet check valves standard and the billet ones are extra? Or does not come with any check valves unless you select the additional cost option of the billet ones? If this is the case are the check valves necessary?

So where does the engine get it fresh air feed with this catch can design? Normally when you install a clean air separator it is plumbed with it's own dedicated run into the top of the air box so filtered air can enter the engine . It looked like this kit has the clean air separator connected to a Y fitting that is connected to the turbo inlet and vacuum side of the catch can. With the turbos spooled up doesn't this result in a non-air flow or vacuum situation in the block?

I mean i get that my crank case would go form under slight vacuum to neutral pressure, but i don't see how that would increase oil consumption or effect performance. environmentally speaking it wouldn't be favorable, and potentially a fire hazard. But lets say i throw a cheaper catch can and then vent to atmosphere, i can go find one for $30 (vs $430), zero oil vapors return into my engine, the environment suffers a little, my wallet would be happier.

The catch can will most likely last longer than the vehicle itself. UPR recommends cleaning the can once a year by removing it from the vehicle and flushing the can with dawn dish soap and water (carb cleaner and other chemicals can damaging the anodizing).

Oil turns black surprisingly quick no matter how often you change the oil. Your dip stick always read full because you might be catching 10-12 oz of oil with the can over a few thousand miles, but 10-12 oz of oil out of 6 quarts isn't that much.

Is it worth adding this to a 3.5 ecoboost with 94k miles on it and misfiring every time you stomp on it or is it too late and the valves are gunked up so bad that this mod will do nothing?

it froze in the winter, its not just oil and gas ... theres also water and the water is on the bottom once all those separate. and in the winter, the cold air is passing right through your grill and with the wind chill making it even colder, its more likely to freeze that water sitting at the bottom and the lighter gas and oil sitting above the block cyclinder of ice making it not drainable until you either poke through it or let it thaw.

Well, I have a lot of feedback for you. Quick preface, I am NOT a mechanic, and my mechanical ability, is likely in the top 40% at best. First off, the video should be updated to reflect the current build of the product. Much has changed. The Product DOES NOT FIT, installed as shown in this video, It impedes the hood of the truck. The product is now shipped with a 3 inch extension, to lower the install. Still Arguably does not fit. at 3:39 it states the need to remove the fitting, Nope, it works just fine as is. with the new hardware. I was upsold a Hi-Flo PCV that fits into this space, it is the same as the OEM, Except the OEM has a greater internal diameter, and does not use a 1/128th Hex key to hold it in place. This piece was not needed unless you broke the original. At 5:30 he is talking about a factory pcv valve connector, It looks to me like all the connections are the same. I have no different connection. Unless I replaced the wrong one with the Hi-Flo PCV? The one I received has no knurling and I do not believe it can be taken apart or cleaned. This video shows then removing the hose fittings, Not with the skill/ tools I have available. and lastly, it really does not fit. It is installed, it is done, it did take roughly an hour. But it was far from smooth, and I am quite glad, there was a youtube video. All this Considering, it is by far and away the most expensive catch can kit, I found.
