    Even with the minor QC issues this is an amazing representation of a F-14B. The sculpted details and especially the paint and decals are top notch! Wow. It does look beautiful in that banked turn position on the stand. Thanks for sharing.

    Watching you assemble this particular model was simply frustrating. It's quality issues like these which currently drive me out of collecting models. Everything becomes more and more expensive and quality control just doesn't hold up... I mean this is terrible with print errors, non-fitting parts, a messed up canopy and a useless stand. That's NOT okay!

    A couple other bits of trivia - at the time of the model (2005) the Rippers were known for having a band made up of pilots/rios. We also had an actual boar's head we would keep on the wall of our ready room at sea and ashore. Our commanding officer from 2002, CDR John "Lung" Aquilino, went on to become a four star admiral and served as CINCPACFLT and as INDOPACOM.

    Fun fact about the targeting pod, the RIO actually wouldnt use the same stick as the AWG-9 interaction stick. There was an additional stick mounted off his left side. The pod video feed would still be put on his screen the TID, replacing the standard TCS on the nose of the jet with a flip of a switch.

    My recollection is the AIM-54 could be launched from as many as 90 miles, depending on speeds, altitudes, and aspect of target (ie: coming towards or flying away). For example it may have launched from 90 miles to target but if both were heading towards each other at high mach he may only be 50 miles away at intercept due to collective closing speeds.

    Not a very big deal, but the larger missile that you were holding was the AIM-54 Phoenix. It was 1 of 6 that could be carried at 1 time. The F14 was capable of tracking 24 targets and firing the AIM-54 Phoenix missiles against 6 of them from a 100 miles away. They are "fire and forget" self guided after launch.

    Kind of a random but interesting fact in regards to the F-14B: The original F-14B (an early 1970s project) was intended to use the Pratt and Whitney F401 (derivative of the F100) in place of the TF30s, with the proposed F-14C consisting of an avionics upgrade. Neither variant was built, due to cancellation of the program in 1974-1975 (due to cost overruns/reliability issues with the F401/early F100s). The F110-powered Tomcats ended up making up less than half the functional fleet, which is rather unfortunate (the TF30s were frankly not a good long-term powerplant for the Tomcat lmao)

It’s like 50% of the models you buy end up damaged and flawed from just trying to fit accessories. Even when you take all the care and time in the world, if pieces don’t fit, it’s not going to end well. And you shouldn’t need sticky tac or glue on a brand new anything

They were light gray with a small VF-11 logo in the center of the rudders. Also the carrier air wing designator was AC, not AA that is painted on the inside of the tail rudder on your model. For that time frame (81-85), yes, the jets were early Block 75s, tailcode was AC, and painted in the overall gloss gull grey scheme . However, after you checked out of the command, the squadron was chopped to CVW-6 in 1985, & the tail code changed to AE, then it changed to AG when the squadron transferred to CVW-7 in 1997, and changed to AA in 2004 when the wing left the Geo. Washington to go back to the JFK while still assigned to CVW-7. The solid insignia blue tails first came out in 2004 on the CAG & CO jets. The paint scheme on the model is accurate for the real jet. It was a special, one-off scheme to commemorate the units last days flying the F-14 before it transitioned to the F-18F.

    I saw a LOT of F-14s in my time in service aboard the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy and NONE of them showed so many heavy black lines between the panels. A typical weapons load for standard mission would be 2 sidewinders, 2 sparrows, might carry 2 phoenix and 20 mm gun.

    I think the pitot tube is on the left side near the cockpit. I went to an air show in the 1980s and there was an F-14 there, I asked the pilot what the little 90 degree bent tube on the side was and he said pitot tube.

  • @get2dachoppa249

    @get2dachoppa249

    What he was saying was the pitot tube on the tip of the radome is actually one of the 4 angle of attack (AoA) probes on the forward fuselage. There are two pitot tubes, one on each side of the nose, just under where the canopy & windshield meet, two more AoA probes on the left side of the forward fuselage, a single AoA probe on the right side of the forward fuselage along with a total temperature probe.

    I think the name on the bottom of the plane is the name and rank of the plane captain who is in charge of the whole plane. They say that the plane captain owns the plane and the pilot just flys the plane

    Yep, his/her name, rank and hometown are usually down there. Another fun thing about plane captains is that while squadron pilots may or may not get their name on a jet, the plane captain always will. They're tied to that jet and often take a lot of pride in maintaining them.

    CMDCM AW/SW means Command Master Chief with his specialty primary being Air warfare and his secondary being Surface warfare qualifications for specifically Mark Hall, he would be the plane captain, however, I was not able to find that specific sailor, need a little more info on him to see if he is real. Regardless I definitely would not pay $100-$350.00 for that model in 1/72 scale not a chance. Cmdr Rodriguez however was the commanding officer of VFA11 Red Rippers and was relieved at a COC by Cmdr. Anthony T. DeSmet in 2007 NAS Oceana at Va beach. Regarding the label under the port wing, I have never seen this before in this location on any of the VFA11 birds. Usually, there is a warning label under the port canopy that refers to activated charges but not under the wing. However, there is an F14 in Northrop Grumman Long Island New York that does have these warnings displayed in those locations I believe.

    @Hanshi64 I was wondering about the Command Master Chief on the wheel flap, I only served on a DDG and LCC and I am not very well versed in aircraft squadrons, is it normal for someone that is ranked as a Command Master Chief be considered a plane captain? I would have thought the plane captain position would be assigned to a lower ranked individual. Just wondering?

There's other better quality model companies like century wings, yes caliber wings is similar but the paint and details are alot better. Century wings has better attaching ordinance. Also here's a bit of history for you. The Iranians used the Phoenix to great affect and shot down quite a few airports, also the Phoenix has a range of around 100 nautical miles. I do like your channel keep it up.

I may buy another one of their models in the future to see if I just got a bad one. Good info!
