By far the best explanation I've heard! Took me a long time to understand the dogs are doing the power transfer not the gears... After that all else was elementary my dear Mr. EZ. Very good video Sir. Wish I had your talent for explanation. Take care, be safe!

+Michael De Kock If your serious about doing the work yourself you might start digging into it. The book will give you some guide lines but you will have to figure out much of it as you go. It will take a lot of time on u tube to find all the details. There is no easy way. Everything and ever one is different. There is no quick easy fix. Welcome to the school of hard knocks.

I picked up a used one like that. Took it apart to look and found the tip off the end of 1st -2nd shift fork broke off laying in the bottom of the case. Would not allow me to get it in 1st. Relaxed it with old used steel one and still works good.

Mine goes in just like it used to, but comes back out with any load in either direction. Was only popping out on the overrun before. Hunting for another, but we'll see how long that takes.

I wish I new of a vw book that tells all. I should try and right one for the DIY guys like you and I. The factory books are great but don't show everything and are always referring to special tools. I just learned by reading what i could and taking broken ones apart. All of it very painful and time consuming.

Thanks for sharing EZGZ, on 10:50 you are shouwing the adjusting nuts for the shiftfork. I have the same type tranny and it wound shift in to 4th gear. I notice a different in how far I can pull out the shiftrod. In 4th I can pull it out approx 3 mm less far out then in 2nd gear. I can feel it slitly hitting te synchroon. Do I need to adjust the 3-4 shiftfork, or?

+Gert Heres Sorry Gert, I can't second guess your problem. One day at breakfast many years ago I saw an ad in the news paper. Someone was selling a pile of broken transmissions that his son left at his farm. I went and picked out 4 greasy sedan trannys that looked similar to mine.$100 for 4 of them. I washed them off drained the oil and started taking things apart to learn what I could. I bought a Bentley manual and some measuring tools and continued my self taught apprenticeship. I made these video's to show folks that there is no magic. You just have to get in and get dirty. Good Luck

EZGZ, enjoy your videos! I have the same shift fork jig, the issue I have is I never know what settings / spacers to use, until I put it in the case and find it is not right, then I try another jig setting. Any tips on setting up the jig?? I even tried an old case, BUT it was different too old and the adjustment came out wrong. thanks.

I had that problem too. Then one day I had an idea. I laid a straight edge over the top of the transmission and measured down to the face of the bearing surface behind the pinion. Then I measured to the face of my shift jig to the face of the intermediate housing. It has to be the same! That's the secret. I still drill the hole for the EZGZ mod and install a electricians plug just in case I have to fine tune first and second shift fork with tranny assembled. I have several vids on that as well.

@@TheEZGZ thanks so much, great tip. I see there are 3 different lengths. But there is no serial number dates for newer trans. But your method should work great. I saw the video on the plug. I thought if I just get it right, I won't need that. But it's another great idea.

I have a trans that got water in it and reverse gear is rusted to the reverse shaft. Consequently, I can't remove the gears from the gear case. I am able to remove the gears to the point that I have about 3 inches of clearance to see the rusted shaft in the case. I can also see and reach the reverse gear lever and a 10mm bolt attaching it to the reverse selector shaft. Is there any way I can disconnect the reverse gear lever from the reverse fork so I can pull the gears the rest of the way out?

Steve Bradley I had that same issue come up on the first tranny. My advice is to force anyway you can. Soak it with penetrating oil, use heat, Pry bars etc. IMHO that tranny is junk. You will find more rust and junk inside but it is Fantastic to learn from. There are clips and spacers and bolts and all kinds of things that you can strip off and save. The most important thing is the knowledge you will gain. Get a service manual as well. Study it. Your doing it just like I did. So have fun but look for another tranny to build.

I can't select 1st or reverse by moving the couple by hand (after removing the shifter shaft) so have concluded that my problem is inside the box .... your video (even though I've come to it 7 years late!) has been invaluable in helping me understand the workings inside, especially that bolt that acts as a pinch clamp on the shift rod. Thanks EZGZ!! :)
