Colace, ducosate sodium, yes, it is marketed as a stool softener. It also works very well in the ear. If you can get it between the wax plug and ear canal it works great to decrease the surface tension (lubrication). Olive oil, mineral oil, Debrox all work the same way.

You probably mean the ear speculum. It is a cone shaped funnel that allows you to see into the ear canal with a microscope. You are probably used to see other channels use an endoscope.
