😲 Extreme Volvo HDT // RV Hauler // ARI Sleeper // HDT Condo

Check out this awesome Volvo HDT RV Hauler ARI Sleeper Condo. Marty shows us how his beautiful Semi-Tractor Sleeper functions great for work and play.
👉 Statement from Marty regarding working in his RV:
It looks like a semi but on paper it’s a motorhome. The Semi has been retitled as a motorhome (it is) after an inspection by my local sheriff, and is no longer titled as a commercial vehicle. This is shown on the registration. I used to stop at scales and sometimes get hassled, but once I retitled to unit as an RV and showed them the registration, the Colorado State Patrol told me I do not need to and gave me the code section stating so. The so called RV exemption. This is like a Super C with a toy hauler in use, just more modular and safer because the capacity is so high as with all HDTs.
Now the next gray area for all HDT and RV users is, are all RVs universally exempt from the commercial requirements because most full timers work from their units in some capacity. I pushed the issue at a scale house (I do not recommend this. never a good idea) once and the answer I got was since my vehicle was (at the time) titled and plated as a commercial semi tractor, if I drove across state lines and then worked on my laptop for pay, that alone would invoke the requirements. If that requirement were applied to RVs, thousands of owners would be in non-compliance.
So far, 2 years, with the retitled truck, so good. But I don’t invite trouble by stopping at scales either. Once I got chased down and the trooper said “Have a nice day” once I told that this vehicles is really a motorhome. That is my approach.

I totally understand in this gentlemans case the need for the "condo" or living quarters. What I don't totally understand is the folks towing exclusively an RV what is the need for the investment in the "condo"? I mean the 3500 dually they used to tow with most likely did not have living quarters in it? Seems odd to me .... ? 😊

That’s a beautiful tractor. When the container is on the back of tractor, it is no longer a private RV cause he’s using it commercially to make money. How does he get away with registering the tractor as, I assume, an RV when using it commercially? Does he cover up the Private RV sign on the sides of the tractor and go across the highway scales? I’ve never seen anyone doing double duty with a big rig. As a truck driver for 40 years, I have an inquiring mind. I hope you can answer this, I’d really like to know how he does that. When used commercially, he needs the IFTA sticker and permits. Thanks.

I assume that you're asking about the BBC (bumper to back of cab) dimension, in inches. It's a day cab, so it would be less than 156"; the current VNL 300 is about 135" BBC. 156" would be a VNL 400 (short sleeper) and 180" would be a VNL 740 (typical long-haul sleeper cab).

I read Marty’s explanation and he’s using his tractor, registered as an RV, commercially to avoid paying all the State taxes for trucks, like the fuel and highway taxes for the States he drives through. Marty, you are an owner/operator when that container with your tools in it is on the back of your tractor. You are a lawsuit waiting to happen if you’re ever involved in an accident, with the container attached, and the other party gets an attorney. That defense attorney will know the law regarding your situation and does your insurance company know this RV is also used as a business? When that container is on the back, you should have a commercial drivers license, a medical card and a logbook. Marty, you are not an RV when servicing those hydrogen facilities.

It's not even dark gray,@@TonyBenton0728 , it's black-and-white. That's a commercial truck when the box is mounted and he is working. His argument that other people work from their RVs is interesting, but it fails as soon as he mounts the commercial service box, making the vehicle clearly a truck. Someone writing a blog from the laptop in their RV is not hauling a commercial load. I don't have a problem with what he does with the rig, only the fraudulent use of the RV exemption. The rig itself appears to be well thought out.
