A Year with a HDT - Was it a good choice? | Volvo 660 Heavy Duty Truck | Full-Time RV Living

Another "Where has the time gone" video. We've been towing with a Heavy Duty Truck for about 18 months now. It was a big decision to make, but we took the plunge and jumped in.
It took a bit of adjustment, and we're still perfecting everything. Take a tour of the truck, listen to our thoughts about it, see our biggest problem, and see some of the places we've taken it to in our last year's travel around the country!

After 9 years with my truck, I don’t ask parks if they can handle the rig or even tell parks what I’m driving. When reservations are made, parks get the normal trailer length, and I pull with a BIG dally and then I just show up.

Jeff, go and get a DC to DC charger that way as you are running down the highway the truck is charging your batteries and you don't need to run the generator. Also look at the BluDot air over hydraulic system for brakes. Our plan is the have the electro magnetic brake removed on our coach and have air over hydraulic disc brakes added. Plus since we are doing the we will be added liperts air suspension system to the axels. Going to change out the hubs to oil bathed like over the road commercial trailers. No more repacking the bearings annually. Next big thing is adding a three zone ductless system to the coach. Safe travels and roads Brian and Cindy, "xtreambydesign with passion"

We use solar to charge the batteries for normal loads, and the generator if we want to keep the fifth wheel cool and run AC in the summer. Our trailer brakes are electric over hydraulic and work great with the new Tuscon brake controller. I would love to move to oil bath bearings, and might this year. Had them on our Cedar Creek, way easier than greased bearings. Detractors will say you might have a leak and burn them up, but checking them visually at each stop tends to prevent that.

@@TrippinWithTheSmiths By using the DC to DC charge it's a supplemental supply for the batteries. Makes it so we aren't entirely dependent on the solar and generator. Also Spence we went to air over Hydraulic disc brakes. I eliminated the brake controller, Plus that way brakes work with the abs system on the Volvo HDT. By the way you will catch a bearing leak quick. Nothing stinks as bad as bearing oli and leaves one h mark on your rims.

@@brianroth7852 Man, we have enough solar that we have no issues charging unless we run AC, so no need to add yet another thing to our setup. The DirectLink controller by Tuscon ties into the ECM and provides proportional braking and ABS as well, and requires no changes to the trailer - we can tow any trailer with no issues. Yes, I agree - an oil bath leak is easy to catch. We ran a trailer with oil bath hubs for two years. Way better than grease, IMO.

Absolutely, unless you need 4x4. We had a F350 dually before this, and this is way more comfortable and has way more space.
