HANOI, VIETNAM - Today we’re going on an ultimate Vietnamese street food tour to eat 5 of the must eat Vietnamese foods in Hanoi, that are not pho. I’m hanging out with local food expert @Hanoifood from Hanoi Food. We’re eating some local favorite Vietnamese dishes and some extreme dishes as well. It’s going to be delicious!
Thank you to @Hanoifood for taking me on this amazing Hanoi street food tour:
Here are all the places we ate:
1. Xôi Xéo
Location: Xôi Mây (goo.gl/maps/LWXB1Q6ComQP4pXaA)
Price: 15,000 VND ($0.63) per bowl
One of the common breakfasts in northern Vietnam is sticky rice with toppings. She has to be one of the fastest food assemblers in all of Vietnam!
2. Bún Riêu
Location: Bún riêu Hàng Lược (goo.gl/maps/WbUu189N5ihHDKDP9)
Price: 75,000 VND ($3.15) for fully loaded bowl
Pho is extremely common in Vietnam, but there are so many other noodle soups, and bun rieu is one of the best. This place is extremely popular and we ordered it fully loaded!
3. Bún Chả
Bún Chả Hàng Quạt (goo.gl/maps/QJqbDn8X6miUBKzE9)
Price: 45,000 VND ($1.89) per portion
If there’s one dish that you have to eat when you’re in Hanoi, Vietnam, it would be bun cha for lunch. The combination of grilled pork in a soup of fish sauce with noodles and vegetables is heavenly.
4. Bún ốc
Location: Bún ốc cô Huệ (goo.gl/maps/uVRbstsbXmLntvdU8)
Price: 40,000 VND ($1.68) per bowl
One of Khoa’s favorite local dishes is bun oc, or snails and noodles. We specifically tried the cold version with giant snails!
5. Cháo
Location: Cháo Sườn Sụn Huyền Anh Đồng Xuân (goo.gl/maps/FJhqyLWhaqjo7xhP9)
Price: 35,000 VND ($1.47) per bowl
Another common dish in Vietnam is chao, or congee, rice porridge. Rather than being chunk with rice grains, this was one of the smoothest bowls of congee ever.
6. Chả Rươi
Location: Cửa Hàng Chả Rươi Hưng Thịnh (goo.gl/maps/899cEgbVrh8xhXZK8)
Price: 35,000 VND ($1.47) per piece, we ate 5
One more extreme Vietnamese food we had to try was cha ruoi, a sandworm pancake. A little bizarre, but proved to be one of the best meals of the day!
Thank you for watching this ultimate Vietnamese street food tour in Hanoi!

I've been watching your videos for years now. It all started during my battle with throat cancer when I had to be fed through a tube. Your videos helped me put aside the discomfort of the feeding process and focus on the beauty of different cultures. I instantly became a fan and still watch almost all of your videos. Your genuine curiosity, open-mindedness, and respect for other cultures make you the perfect goodwill ambassador. People like you give hope to our struggling and suffering world. May God bless you and your family.

Bun Rieu is one of the most underrated Vietnamese noodles ever. When you talk about Vietnamese noodles, the one that comes to mind is usually Pho. But Bun Rieu is so so good as well. Had it when I went to Saigon, and craving it ever since cos it's not easily found where I'm from.

Props to this tour guide. Obviously, his English isn't top notch, but he tries his best to communicate. His knowledge of the local eateries seems unmatched. The places he took you were quite surprising because the foods featured in the video are quite obscure, but were packed with local residents. He also pronounces his Vietnamese with a very strong northern accent.

I'm a Hanoian and the tour guide really did took him to some of the legit good destination, in the central tourist district but are famous to the locals by the quality of the food and not just some random fancy restaurant that looks nice. Some place he visited had been serving food for a very long time and is a part of childhood of many Hanoian. Personally I've been eating the Bun Oc Co Hue for like 10 years give or take and recently she opened a second location (you can see it in the sign) that near my house so it''s awsome.

Looks so good! I want to eat all of them when I return to Vietnam! I already ate bun cha from that restaurant and I'm in love with that dish! I also love those herb platters they serve in almost every dish I order. The strength of their taste is heaven for me. One time, I went to Sa Pa, and I got sick because of tiredness. I ate a fish pho with lots of herbs and I got better. The dish I ate was like a delicious food and medicine rolled into one. Also, some folks in Trang An gave me green tea for free because we got rained on. My face was shocked when I tasted that tea. It was so good, I haven't drank that kind of tea ever. And I'm an avid tea drinker! Vietnam is a true food haven. I wish more people will get to experience their food culture.

Then there is the "Hidden Gem"...I love that comment! HOW FAST they can assemble these dishes....I have Never Seen Anything Like This! And their ATTENTION to detail! Incredible! Duck Egg? Wow!... I have Never Seen That Before! A Little Bit of Everything they want you to Taste! I Really Like the term " Award Winning Broth". I am beginning to believe that the Vietnamese broth ( as well as other Excellent Asian Broths! ) are part of what is uncommonly regarded as part of the INCREDIBLE Staple of Foods ...unlike anywhere Else ) is what combines flavors in an uncommon way that other nations DO NOT. The "Auntie" here is like other Special Auntie's that are NOT only GREAT Cooks and purveyors of their businesses, but Wonderfully Kind to be so Generous! OMG..the view of the SNAILS just WOWED Me! Snails are IMPOOSIBLE to get Correctly in The States. What a TREAT to watch! A Half a Dozen??? Oh Lord...Amazing! A LEGENDARY place! The Snail AND The Egg together?? I am Soo Jealous of SUCH Flavor! Then on to Bun Cha! The on to "Rice Porridge (CHAO) (Ribs?)...I do not know how to spell 'KonGee". Sand Worm Pancake....HA! Last place in Hanoi! Cha RuoI...if I spelled it right!....egg, pork, sand worms? Don't know if I could do Sand Worms....but I would give it a TRY. The :Combo Bite" looks Great! I LOVE the Chili's....would put them in ANYTHING! By The way, Mark needs Herbs and Chili's in dishes he wants to "Bump Up". I like to bump up flavor, as well, with spices. Soooo...NOTHING besides Herbs and Spices for me in this video....thanks, Mark. You are a WONDER with what you do!

That’s why tour guide normally take you to “safer” places, where the food is not that impressive but they meet other demand of the majority, like private seats and cleanliness

Oh god I miss Hanoi and Vietnam so much. The food there was incredible. My first trip to Vietnam I was only in Hochimin and honestly wasn't very impressed with the food nor the city. But the second trip I went to Northern and Central Vietnam (Ha Giang, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Phong Nha, Hue and Hoi An) and had an amazing time.

Da Nang, the largest city in central Vietnam, along with Nha Trang, Qui Nhon, Phu Yen , Con Dao, Phu Quoc are great destinations year around with stunning white sand beaches. Sapa, Cao Bang, Mu Cang Chai, Moc Chau, Mai Chau, Pu Luong, Ta Xua, Y Ty, Dien Bien Phu…in Northern mountains are very majestic, gorgeous in the yellow ripe rice seasons, the harvest season (September and October). The autumn in North is very beautiful. The whole rice fields, terraces are filled with brilliant golden colors like a carpet of the giant creating the best-ever picture you have ever seen in your life. Save them for your third coming back to Vietnam.

THanks for this Video Mark. They are always fascinating. The streetfood in Hanoi looks amazing. I have found that language is always the golden key that gives access to the treats available all over the world. What would be so helpful is to give a list of the dishes shown as you describe them in English, then alongside, as Vietnamese translation that could be printed out and shown to the intrepid foodies touring around the streets of Hanoi and other fascinating cities. Otherwise people are trapped in the tourist areas and cannot venture into the more interesting off the beaten track areas. Keep the videos coming!

Thanks to Mark's video, now I know several places I need to head to when I need to eat specific Hanoi's dishes xD. I also love Mark's attitude towards chả rươi. He's amazed and curious. I understand that each culture will have a 'bizarre' specialty, but I don't get why some people chose to film their faces with 'gross' or 'disgust' facial expression... If they're uncomfortable with a specific dish, they should skip it instead of trying to force themselves trying and end up making everyone uncomfortable. Kudos to this great man.
