Extreme Phone Repair - Incredibly Difficult & Tiny - iPhone 5 Pry Damage Micro-Soldering Repair
Ғылым және технология
Its time things got microscopical as I try and fix pry damage on an iPhone. With components smaller than a crystal of sugar or grain of rice this repair isn't going to be easy.

Got the code, it was 1973. :) Nothing on it but one photo of the ground from 2014. Wiped and works perfectly.

You shouldn't pull at the chips too soon, let them float free first and then touch them. Also use waaayyyy more flux when flowing with hot air. You are way less likely to damage the components that way as the flux absorbs the heat instead of the chip. Like drown it in flux. Use capton tape on top of components you do not want to heat up too to minimise loosening them as well. I like to use pieces of metal I have lying around too, small bits of aluminium or something, to put on top of the components that I put capton tape on. Hope this advice gets to you, it will help you greatly. Otherwise I love the videos, I'm really happy to see you trying to get into micro soldering and using a hot air station.

I would also suggest investing in an optical stereo microscope (or trinocular for youtubers) if one intends to do this more often. I find it really hard to position stuff without both eyes and - in case of an electronic one - with noticeable image lag. For the sim protection chip: Usually one of the pads has a different shape on the board and the chip indicating its orientation. If they're not damaged a bit of alcohol should reveal how it should be mounted. In any case: I guess everyone started this way. Well, maybe not with a such successful outcome.
Use Kapton/polyimide tape for heat protection when using hot-air on electronics, super useful and not too expensive.
I would suggest you to have a smaller nozzle for the heat gun so that the heat doesn't spread too wide.

It's crazy how easy the pros make it look. At least you got the job done successfully. I still struggle with regular soldering, let alone soldering at that scale with a microscope!
I would invest in kapton tape and use that around the sim reader. It will protect the plastics.

Yeah, its really a blessing and can protect other components from clumsy Starter-fingers...
Small nozzles, turn fan speed down on rework gun so you are not blowing other components about. You can get dedicated, shaped nozzles in various sizes so removing square profile ICs becomes much easier. Keep at it and spare a thought for the pick and place machines that have to populate these boards 😁
As an avid watcher of Louis R and STS, I was amazed at how difficult the micro soldering is - I am so impressed with your tenacity Hugh.
I repaired my first phone today, an iPhone SE (2016), replaced the battery and the screen and just wanted to say thanks to Hugh for wanting me to repair phones!
Congratulations man, board level repairs are hard, hot and frustrating, you have now unlocked a whole new realm of possibilities, like iCloud lock removal and storage upgrades. Looking forward to more :)
Love your work. I recently did my first micro-soldering job on a phone too - a liquid damaged Alcatel where the owner was desperate for the data. I had to scavenge probably a dozen of those tiny surface mounted capacitors and resistors as well as the display connector from an identical working phone, much like this. It took me a few hours, but it was successful.
Great work man, I love to see you do more micro soldering videos. You are on the right track, you will get better and more comfortable as you do more of these repairs.
You need the heat resistance tape to cover the sim tray area and you can increase the heat and wont melt the plastic. 2nd the chip cannot force pull and need to float 1st. This wont damage the chip. You need sharp tip with 35 degree side soldering to easy apply the flux and the tin. I done it before. Not easy but the effort is there. Keep up the good work. Just advise from self repair guy 😄
This is like the sequel to the “Surgery on a Grape” video. Absolutely wild how small this stuff is!

Nice job mate! I'm excited to see more Micro soldering videos from you! This one was pretty entertaining😺
Its actually good to see you struggle with a repair every now and then. Makes me feel a little better about my success rate.
Awesome micro camera. Looking forward to seeing more videos like this in the future.
I’ve just started learning how to repair smart phone. Learnt a lot from watching your videos. Really enjoy your content.
You have officially evolved. good job on the micro repairs. :)
Thanks for a great video - it's really cool to see your learning process. One suggestion (on top of the tons of good ones below): I would have removed the board from the case. The case represents a pretty significant thermal mass, so it will be sinking away a lot of the heat you're applying to the logic board, forcing your to apply even more heat to overcome it. The components won't come loose (or attach) until the pads - and thus the surrounding area of the board) are hot enough to melt the solder, so minimizing the connected thermal mass is hugely useful for making this easier. Of course you need something to hold the board securely while soldering, but that's what PCB holders are for.
That’s a really nice phone.. definitely worth the restoration.. a valuable collectors item for sure.
Definitely harder than it looks! Great job man! My one suggestion would be to learn what airspeed and heat to use for different boards and different chips. If you want a good idea to reference, you can see my latest video detailing a customer damaged switch lite. I do some BGA rework somewhere near the middle of the video. Hopefully it'll give you a general idea to the type of flux to use and technique to remove and install SMD components. ☺️👌
6:25 i had to do the same thing but with a resistor the other day with a soldering iron! (As i have no hot air station at the moment) it was a nightmare

We need more microchip soldering scenes, its awesome, and useful for you in ways of getting experience as well!)
Hey Hugh Jeffreys that looked to be hard work that you where trying to do but I'am glad that you got it done.
When soldering and desoldering chips you want to use around 350 to 450. 250 isn't enough because even full low melt solder melts at around 280 to 300. Also the plastics used around soldered parts is usually pretty high temperature stuff and even when it softens it will hold its exact shape unless disturbed.
This is cool I like how the inside of a iPhone looks like.
My Dude… You are Amazing ! Hats Off ! Bravo ! That is VERY Impressive !!!
What a captivating video. I was hooked. Great job.
Congrats! Good luck with your micro soldering in the future!

This video makes me appreciate my iPhone 13 Pro Max even more... making me want to take care of this thing... I love my phone so much and seeing as how it's so compact with its components makes want to take care of this thing so much more.... I had a cheap android phone for about 10 years, never owned an iPhone before. I hated my phone so much, and my credit sucks so I couldn't just get a new phone without having to pay a huge down payment. Luckily my dad was able to get me my first ever iPhone being the 13 Pro Max. It is such a huge upgrade from the phone I have been using for the last 10 years... I love my phone even more now from watching this video.
You should consider using epoxy solder paste to apply the replacement chips. MG Chemicals makes both 2-part and low heat setting versions that will allow you to attach the chips without applying additional heat and risking melting other components.
Those tiny parts are why I quit electronic repair back in 2000. I saw this coming. Too much stress.

Great work 👍
I watch your videos but have no interest in phone repair, i simply like watching you fix phones.
great efforts for first soldering attempts:) More temperature! It's better to have more temperature for a short time and remove the party quick instead of heating up the board for ages
even with some tiny solder paste bits left it still works.wow
Looked like you were pulling on the chips before the solder had fully melted? Iirc Louis Rossmann & Northridgefix use temps of 400+? Maybe use some Kapton tape or similar to shield items from the heat?
Never been this early well i wanna say what i am gonna say thx to you i got into fixing mobile phones even worked as a apple ingenieur for a year sadly there fired me thx to covid long story now beginning for myself and gonna make a living out of this 😁
thank for video👍
You need to use high quality flux and low melt solder. It makes a huge difference.

I love those s7 edge videos Lol I watched it over 10 times!
Some recommendations from someone who works repairing electronics: -With hot air, usually dont need to add flux or more solder to the components that you want to remove, less messy after all. One thing that you can do is clean it before removing it with some IPA if it has gunk around it. -If you remove a lot of the same components over and over again you end up knowing when it will get loose with the hot air, but for first time desoldering a component, i do not recommended holding it with tweezers while you heat it up, because you can try to extract it before all the solder is melted and can break pads, or even worse, a leg of the component itself. -Kapton tape is your friend when plastics or other small components are near. -And one more thing, when you finish heating something, WAIT until the area cools down, dont add IPA to clean it right away, because like how it happened to you in the video, small components will fly away.
WOW , NICE !!! Greetings from Europe.
Let’s go Hugh!
Kapton tape can hold things in place that maybe effected by heat and aluminium tape to shield heat sensitive areas
You’ll need a proper soldering station… I recommend looking for a jbc or weller. In both cases look for cartridge style tips. Easy to swap and a great variety of tips. Not bad for a first micro-solder attempt :) gj!
If you want to get into this kind of repairs i recommend starting out with something other than iPhone i myself started out with an old graphics card just to get used to working with smaller components then moved on to more complex devices
This is awesome!!!

Use kapton tape, also get a better soldering iron like TS100 or something similar. It's very close to expensive hakko stations. Also get a better hot air station quick or Atten are best options.
I used to manage my corporation's wireless phones for the provisioning department, and still provide support for mobile devices even today. I'm certain you can reinstall the OS to the phone by putting it in DFU mode and then connecting the phone to iTunes. Apple doesn't release new security patches for those old devices anymore, but they do allow you to re-download the last supported OS for any of their devices. This will allow you to get past the pin/passcode.

Ya but that gets rid of the older ios which makes this phone unique
Raise the heat on the air station i set mine on 404 C° to pull small components quicker and safer low heat dosen't always mean safe also kapton tape as your friend tape up any parts you might melt.
That golden glass was beautifull
The little black ones are resisters, brown ones caps or inductors/ grey also inductors!
Soldering is one thing micro soldering way at a different level
Keep growing...
Kapton tape, better soldering tips, smaller nozzle will help you make the job less messier and much more faster.
If you upgrade to iOS 15.2 beta on the iPhone 13 and do a screen replacement Face ID should still work. Could you test this out and do a video on it please?
Wow, I have trouble soldering components as big as coins... Respect
HI can you some time do a video about repairing a macbook or something that is completely destroyed from ewaste? that would be cool thx
This is why schematics, solder temperatures and data sheets are crucial to repair. I hope going forward Apple gives some help in that front.
How did you get the disabled screen off. It would be nice if your share some information so some of us can learn 🤔
