I try to own only things that bring me joy each day and keep them dust free and very clean. When I clean I practice gratitude and thank the things I own individually -even the floors or walls keeping me safe and warm. I even thank the toilet 😂 This practice helped me a lot to not just clean but feel more abundant, grateful and happier.

One thing I love about all the minimalism videos I find online is that it gives me hope for a future where as a whole we can agree that material things we have worked so hard for are not what life us truly about. My mother is a hoarder. I am a minimalist. I am 72 and she is 93. So for 72 years, I have dealt with her mess. She has been in a care home for the last three years. I hoped the care home would mean the end of the hoarding. But, she has managed to fill her room to the brim with anything that she can get her hands on. I can't deal with the mess anymore! I understand that hoarding is a mental illness. So sad that she never got the help she needed to deal with letting go of stuff. I am so thankful everyday that somehow my mind works differently.

People that didn't grow up in a hoarder's home don't understand how embarrassing and traumatic it can be growing up in a house of clutter with piles of piles of trash and junk. I love this! We got rid of everything and even ended up selling our home to live nomadically in our RV. People dont even realize how sucked in to the “norm” they are and soul crushing and planet wrecking this “norm” is.. I know I didnt realize this until we pulled out and finally felt freedom. RVing and living minimally saved my life and gave my family unity. The “American Dream” is being sold as the right and best way to live but really, its just a way to control the masses, to keep them working like little worker bees keeping the queen (whoever that might be) nice and fat.

Awesome. Great for you and your family. We did something similar 8 years ago. Not to the level that you did, but we sold our high end suv, sports car, motorcycles, house, rental house, ALL of the excess (as you mentioned). We paid off all of our debt, then bought a simple house, quit our careers, started a small business, and 8 years later we have maintained this simpler life. We work 3-4 days per week, and spend time together doing things that bring our family closer. That is living life. It was scary at first, but we soon realized an invisible weight was released with each item we got rid of. Will never go back

I feel you! It seems like in my place (northern Italy) and in the social class I come from (medium-low working class), hoarding to a level someone could describe as pathological was totally the cultural norm until a few decades ago. I'm literally talking keeping 15 outworn jackets in a dedicated extra wardrobe, stacking 20-years-old magazines in the attic, owning 3 sets of coffee cups that have never been used, having closets full of plastic bags from stores and so on. I don't dare to describe myself as minimalist yet, but being where I am now means having already gone a huge path.

@@deonaboyle7651 i'm glad it helped. After all, we cannot blame our elders either. I used to be mad at my grandma for literally valuing and loving things much more than people, as in, I was not allowed to play in the garden to prevent me from ruining it, the only time I walked into her living room she warned me not to thread on the carpet (as if it was not what carpets are for), she herself used to cook on a small stove in the basement in order to keep her actual kitchen new and clean. As children they have known hunger, living without a toilet and going barefoot for not being able to afford shoes: no surprise they now bulk-buy and hoard more canned food than the entire family will ever eat, own golden-lined dishes they have never eaten on, buy tons "fancy" stuff they are going to "keep for special occasions" which means they are never going to actually use and so on. I do have two sets of dishes btw, an everyday one and one "for special occasions", but I chose the latter to be dishwasher safe and not frail or too fancy, so that I actually use it anytime I have guests.

It’s surprising what you really need. We just bought a few outfits and washed them frequently. When our house was rebuilt and we moved back in, the amount of stuff that was saved by the fire was overwhelming. I don’t even have much. The people who removed and washed all our items even said that I Im a minimalist. I could still get rid of everything I have and pack my 6 suitcases with pictures and videos of my children. That’s all I’m attached to. Also, my two dogs and cat🤣 Ill have to think about the husband 🤣

My husband and I are finishing up our 8 month bus conversion and I’m expecting our second child (also delivering at home) next month. I’m in the process of getting rid of everything that doesn’t fit on our bus and your videos resonate with me. You’re so right it isn’t the stuff but how society tells us to live and how busy we need to be, that makes us have stress and anxiety. I did all that, school, marriage, bought a house in the suburbs, packed it full, and felt overwhelmed and unhappy with my environment. Anyway, thanks for your videos. Living in California many people don’t understand the lifestyle I’m striving for but I’m looking forward to traveling the states meeting like minded people who truly get it. Best to you.

You’re achieving what a lot of people promoting this lifestyle have not. Thank you for these videos 🤍

Thank you for this inspiring video. ❤️❤️❤️ I’m on my journey with minimalism too, and made a goal to release 2022 things this year. Otherwise I’ve been downsizing for several years. It feels good to let these things go as I’m in the midst of a major life change, and don’t want to start the next chapter of my life burdened with so many “things”. At first I was struggling with what to let go of, until I reversed the process. I was asking what should I get rid of, and I would get overwhelmed and want to hide under the covers. And then I had an aha moment. Now I’m only looking at what I want to keep, and stuff is now flying out the door to give to Habitat for Humanity, or Goodwill. Plus I now look forward to doing this work of lightening up. I’m finding that there’s actually very little that I want to keep, and will most likely go way beyond my goal of 2022 things to give away this year. 💚🌈🌟

@@MadisunGray Ok I’ll let you know how my progress goes. I will add here that last week, in one day’s time, I gave away over 300 things. It felt really good. I’m going to be moving across the country sometime this summer, and then next year moving to England. This is one of the reasons that I’m so motivated to continue purging. Since I’m starting a new life, why would I want to bring my old life with me. 😉🌈🌟

Beautiful perspective! I find as a home owner that learning to love old things has been immensely soul nourishing. I buy second hand and I cherish the things others would throw away. In this way I can release the anxiety of attachment to things- the never ending cycle of wanting new and “fancy” things. Thank you for reminding me of why this is important 🌸

Thanks for this upload! Your video popped up on my KZread Feed this morning as I have been following various Minimalist Channels for some years now. I am not a minimalist by any stretch of the imagination, but as you so aptly stated, my journey towards cultivating a more "freeing" lifestyle started by looking at where I was spending the bulk of my time. I was and still am a career oriented professional who worked tirelessly to chase the American Dream. Once my husband and I secured the bespoke house filled with our favourite things, the clothing, the vehicles, and that fast paced lifestyle, we then burned extra fuel to manage it all. I'm an East Coaster born in Pennsylvania and worked many years in New York and Connecticut, so life in these States is fast paced. Then my husband's company moved us to Northern California where the lifestyle became even more fast paced since the cost of living there is off the charts. One can make good money there and can most definitely acquire all the trappings of the Dream, but the "true cost" of achieving these things sadly took a toll on our health, our relationships, and our sanity because all we had time for was working hard to maintain all that we thought was going to make us happy 😕. Fast forward to today where I currently live and work in the Middle East. There's truly a culture here that embraces a work/life balance and it has forced us to slow down and re-evaluate our lives. It's been the most rewarding opportunity that allowed us to live more mindfully.

We also sold/donated everything (literally everything minus 4 suitcases) and made a huge move to Central America. It has been a huge lifestyle change and I’ve felt so many of the same things you’ve expressed in this video. We are 14 days out from another big move in which we’ve sold everything once again (this time we have 12 suitcases lol). Im amazed at how much stuff we’ve accumulated in 3 years when I thought we were pretty minimal. We are moving to a piece of land in Ecuador that I hope to nurture more slow simple living on ❤️
