Extreme Constructions: The Secrets of the Cathedrals

Ойын-сауық

It was the highest building constructed during the Middle Ages and is an architectural masterpiece. Built over hundreds of years, between 1176 - 1439, Strasbourg Cathedral is radically different from any other Cathedral. It built using new technologies and according to principles never tested before. For the first time, the researchers were able to trace in 3D the incredible history of this project. They reveal how the builders were able to defy the laws of physics to build higher and higher and explain the importance of iron in this stone cathedral.

17:12 LOL I love how the artist was sure to draw in a wine drinking monk relaxing and making merry while the lay brothers worked hard.

The designers gave so much detail even though they knew that they would not live to see the completed cathedral.

Seems like the Strasbourg Cathedral has always been overshadowed by Notre Dame de Paris and the Cologne Cathedral. To my shame, I had never even heard of the Strasbourg Cathedral untill I started watching this documentary. Thank you.

Same here. This build is innovative. I love how modern architects and engineers with their computers stil are in disbelief and awe over what they see.

A truly magnificent building but it definitely needs the second tower/spire added. For as a gothic cathedral it just simply looks wrong without it, as it defies the principle of gothic architecture.

wonderful documentation! Thank you very much. But I have one correction to make: when Freiburg (Breisgau) was mentioned you did not show the right picture of this city. Please google Freiburg im Breisgau and see the cathedral. It's spire is called: the most beautiful helmet of christiandome and you will understand why. The spire of Strasbourg is ingenious, but the spire of Freiburg is just beautiful.

If anyone's very much into such aspects from architecture to construction materials to spirituality and symbolism, I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series, especially the ones about Medieval France and England

Two handsful of thumbs up for a great video.....but.... I have a small complaint. It was annoying to have to read the captioning to know what was being said. There were times I wanted to see the details of the building. Had to read and then rewind to see. Please just narrate it all in English. Still, a fantastic video.

I am not a fan of religion. But I understand religion to be a catalyst for many of the scientific disciplines today. Building engineering and architecture for instance. I wonder how many workers have been involved over the years.

Totally agree. Cathedrals built on top of power plants to hide the global 'free' energy.
