    I decluttered my kitchen with my baby granddaughter. I didn't know it was body-doubling. I'm serious. I sat her in a jumper and gave her a different toy or snack while we "chatted". We did this off and on for a couple of hours. She was happy and Grammie got so much accomplished.

    I wonder if cats count. I was working in the kitchen doing what was necessary to find the counter and going through the cabinets to make room for the counter stuff that had no home. Tossing trash and putting some things in the pantry or elsewhere to didn't need to be in the kitchen just yet or were seldom used, or to the donate box. They would check my progress continually. I would shoo them off, but they were back again. I did have a lot of success. So maybe cats count, too.

    @@helsheubner6414 I like to start with trash. Packacking. Things that I thought I would repair, but looking at it now I know I won't. Then some things that you know you will be able to part with. Especially if they are bigger (if you can get to it, otherwise they will wait until you dig it out). Try breaking it down into tiny projects. Perhaps there's a box of clothes you shoved in there. Try them on. If they don't fit, you can take it to somewhere it can be used. That gets the first box out and you have gotten rid of clothes you won't wear anyway. Perhaps some decor you weren't ready to let go of at the time, but since your style changed and now you are. Stuff like that. Just scan for something you can reach and are ready to part with. Once you've started momentum will come. Maybe it's something as simple as some items that belong in other places in your home that you shoved in there during a tidy.

    Though I didn't know the term (body doubling) at the time, I now realize that during my school-age years, my mom and I were body doubling for each other! When I was doing my homework after school/dinner, if I was off in my room or the living room by myself, I'd get distracted or off track. So we'd sit at the dining table together. It helped me stay focused (and have help nearby if I had questions about my schoolwork). She was a teacher and she'd grade papers or work on lesson plans, and I think it helped keep her company. In some weird way, it was good quality time for us, even though it wasn't very social.

    Oh, I love it! 😍 I could never go without lids for the bins, though. I live in Florida and it doesn't matter how clean your house is, there will be bugs, especially in the garage (we don't have basements here). 😬 Also, with all the humidity and rain we get, I'd be worried all that nicely organized stuff would get ruined. I do use clear bins so I can see what's inside.

    I was thinking to myself, it's all well and good to keep the lids off of things you know are going to be added to often, but that very full plushie bin without a lid is just asking for bugs to move in 😰Really, anything that isn't added to often should probably have a lid. And things that ARE added to often, could still have a lid, just sitting unsecured on top, so you just lift and toss instead of plain old toss. Would still keep the dust out! Admittedly, I imagine that it's a lot easier to get a kid not to completely latch the lid if the lid isn't there to be latched. Depends on the kid, I suppose!

    I had a hard time wanting to take on my basement, so I went through categories of items like Marie Kondo advises. First I went through all of my old clothing, then all of my old teaching materials, then seasonal decor. After that, there were just a few random things left. I brought everything upstairs, a few boxes at a time, to sort through because I don’t like being in the basement, and it was almost all going to be leaving the house anyway.

  • @nicolezawacki3491

    @@tgayer1 same with me I don’t like being in the basement. Even when I moved in I wasn’t fond of the space and now I just completely avoid it except for when I’m doing laundry. I have ADHD and OCD so I’ve been trying the Marie Kondo method (I even have the book and have read it) but it gets hard because if my high sense of sentimentality doesn’t get in the way, the OCD does. It’s like a walking contradiction… which makes me only want to give up quicker. I decided though that this coming weekend I’m going to buy 3 totes- one for keep, one for donate, and one for unsure. Then go through one box at a time while sitting upstairs and go from there.

  • @Y3w3lz

    @Y3w3lz

    I agree with @tgayer1, take it in small chunks. Either just a couple of boxes/bags/piles or 30 mins at a time. The point is that whatever you decide is leaving the house you take action on right then. Especially the donations, put them in your car as soon as you are done for that session and drop them off within 3 days or schedule a pick-up for the big stuff asap if you have the option in your area. That works for me, at first it will feel like you're not doing enough but you'll get there... as long as you're not bringing more stuff in. Even if you have to take a break for whatever reason you'll be able to notice the difference.

BTW, I came here to recommend a few other fantastic KZreadrs for you, only to find that 2 of them have already been suggested here!!! (Dana K White of "a Slob Comes Clean," and Dawn "the Minimal Mom") PLUS two others who I find very helpful: Kallie of "But First Coffee," and the one I think will really resonate with your situation, Marissa of "A to Zen Life" (she talks about her sentimental attachment due to difficult childhood and loss of a parent at a young age). All 4 of these lovely ladies talk about where/how to begin when you're overwhelmed, have different approaches for different mindsets or stages of life, or different scenarios. I have found great inspiration, as have many others. YOU CAN DO THIS! The hardest part is starting.

    I am a cricket! But I have to say, I LOVE lids, and I use them for everything. Keeps dirt, dust, and critters OUT. Having a ladybug police bf, Mr. Ultra Organized, I have also learned this from him. Lids also take 1 second to take off, and put back on. And, where you put the seasonal/holiday decor, I would have moved all of that to another area out of sight so you can have that space for more storage. We do a Prepper Pantry in OUR basement - enough food/drinks/supplies for 100 days at a time! But, I am SO proud of this couple, and their basement!

    Hello from Australia! You're inspiring and amazing and I'm so grateful for you. As for being inappropriate, it's so much freedom! My very polite gentleman dad had a stroke in 2020 and his frontal lobe has been affected. It means he's extra sweet and emotional, and sometimes inappropriate 🤣 even my mum who is also shy and polite can have a laugh when dad says something a bit out there. It's wonderful.

Maybe this time I’ll try a video as a body double.

    The thing I find the hardest with decluttering is getting all the stuff out of the home. You can only put out so much trash and recycle each week and you can only put so many donations in your car at a time. It takes longer to get rid of the stuff than it does to clean it out in the first place and if anyone in my family sees what’s going out a significant amount of it ended up back in the house.

    It might be helpful to only declutter one room or zone the day before garbage/recycling day, so that way it is out to the curb right away. Also, if you only do one room or zone at time, the donations won't be overwhelming and you can do a drop off next time you go out to run errands or pick up groceries.

    Hi, Grannie Cyndy from South Australia here. Loved your 'inappropriate pj's' story. So funny but also insightful. Maybe there's people who can love us for shocking them.... I worked as a receptionist in a dental surgery. Many people suffered from anxiety. One very friendly lady who came from time to time had to have a cavity filled which would involve an injection to numb her was really scared. After her treatment, I asked her if she was ok. She said 'Oh, it wasn't so bad. Just a little prick.' My response came way to quickly. 'Now that's no way to refer to our favourite dentist is it?' She and our Practice Manager who heard the whole exchange were most definitely shocked!! Keep on shockin'

    Inappropriate is my favorite way to be. I am so lucky to have friends who are like me and accept who I am. I am able to engage the filter when needed, but I fly that freak flag high and with pride. I tell people who I am, to avoid shocked surprises, and because I like who I am in many ways. Yes, there are parts of me that I do not like and that are a huge part of my mental health fight right now, but being able to just say what I want without fear of being judged by the people I care about, is the best thing I have in my life.
