Now that's a real horse race! I love the distance races, but they are practically non-existent in Canada and the US. Mostly sprints. I remember the classic distance champion Kelso, who won the Jockey Club Gold Cup 5 times in a row--when it was 21/2 miles. Kelso was amazing.

I'm with you, and the fact that distances are not run anymore is a death knell to h orse facing for me. Speed is everything here. In England and the continent there is more to horse racing than speed. Their times are slower, but their horses have more endurance. Stamina to me makes a great horse. A 4 miler is what I like. Steeple chases. Watch Hedgehunter win and run fast after 4 miles!!!

That was how Ron Turcotte got Secretariat to establish that immortal 2:24 for 1.1/2Miles at the Belmonte, and the sudden burst of speed from back to front in the middle of the Preakness race, said he just allowed the Horse to run at will, if it was a more controlling Jockey who actually times his races, these records might not have been created, for no Jockey who has his charge under control would allow a horse to actually sprint 1.1/2 miles, and the crazy burst of speed in the middle of the Preakness, I guess he was lucky to find the right horse for his possible incompetence, who knows?!!!

If anybody remembers a horse called Night City from about 20 years ago they would remember this was his tactic in every race he ran. He was a low grade handicapper who used to be campaigned at 1 mile 2f to 1 mile 4f at the all weather tracks. He used to start his races like his bollocks had been set on fire and do a sprint for the first 5f putting sometimes half the course between himself and the rest. He would just coast into the finish after firing his bullets at the start. Sometimes he got caught and sometimes he didn't. I won shitliads on him. You used to get a run for your money every time at least

Usually horses that go that fast from the start and establish a huge lead will fade in the last turn and come back to the field and be passed in the stretch. They almost never maintain that large of a lead and still win. Sometimes are very lucky if they can still win by a nose. What made this extraordinary is the horse maintained that pace for the entire two miles without anyone gaining ground on the winner. I've never seen that happen in such a long race before.
