Extracting MEK (Butanone) From Priming Fluid

Ғылым және технология

I need some MEK for a future experiment. To get it, we extract it from PVC priming fluid by distillation.

a little advice is to put some fiberglass cloth in it as the direct heat from the aluminum stresses the glass, you can find many drysyn fails on twitter where the flask cracks in half almost comically where it contacts the drysyn due to the direct heat

If the MSDS doesnt list any other component in the priming fluid then you can look at the physical properties to determine whether what you bought is close to 99% MEK. Check the physical properties like boiling point, freezing point, and flash point against the physical properties of MEK.

What sucks in the US is that they took it out of most things back about 5 years ago. Now we have to buy it directly as a bottle full, which can get expensive. And you can't get just 50ml or 100ml. You gotta get like a liter at least. And most won't ship to normal people, or if they do you have to pay more in shipping fees than that you pay for the product itself. They really make it hard to get here for most people. If anyone needs a small amount under 500ml, hit me up and I can help you out if you're in the US. Exporting is way too expensive for it to be useful like that.

Yep, by law it was removed from all consumer products and those that haven't yet will soon when they get caught still putting it in their stuff. Sadly, makes it hard to get here in the states. Gladly, I have a lot and won't run out for a long, long time.

The MSDS gave a very disappointingly small amount of information. It only listed 'methyl ethyl ketone >60%', just like the label on the bottle. I assumed the rest was probably water and other hydrocarbons with a similar boiling point, but I've got no way of checking.

As it turned out, the MSDS didn't give any more information than the label on the bottle. It just said 'methyl ethyl ketone - >60%'. I suppose that means the rest is something benign like water, or maybe it's significantly more pure than I expected...

There is so much stuff in Bunnings that doesn't list all ingredients in their SDS. Diggers brand is classic for this with their solvents, like enamel thinners and such.

I know you're probably just joking but, no thanks to that idea. We'd rather not see him get in trouble or get a video taken down and get a strike for it on his channel. I know other channels that have gotten strikes for posting its synthesis before. Definitely not something you want to post yourself doing, at least. Simply to not draw attention ones self. Lol

Yeah, energetics is a topic I'm never going to delve into on this channel, sorry. While it's true that I don't like the idea of working out the legality and/or the KZread guidelines, the main reason is that explosive compounds just don't interest me, and I'd much rather watch others deal with them instead. The MEK is just going to be used as a solvent, nothing too exciting.

I'm with @BackYardScience2000 and @ScrapScience , energetics will get channel banned or person in trouble- and in my opinion they aren't that interesting anymore. There's only so much fun you can have. However, Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide can be used for polymerization and crosslinking. To me, that's interesting and fun.
