Extra Thoughts On The Theranos Video | TMI

I remember a few experts in the field talking about how they immediately assumed it was a scam, but justifiably so. Theranos was promising to do more tests, with less blood, faster, and with a small countertop appliance sized device. They were willing to believe or at least consider a break-through to allow a device to achieve one or two of those promises, but four immediately set off scam alarms in their heads. And a lot of people are like, oh well, rich people and investors got screwed, not a big deal. But the promise of Theranos sucked funding away from every other competitor in the field trying to make better blood tests, slowing down progress for everyone including patients that could benefit from better tests.

... Until they get used to it. What people don't think about is... Their voice is their signature. Like it or not, their voice is what identifies them. Some of the greatest actors had voices that weren't all that great. Marlon Brando, Steve Buscemi, Joe Pesci, etc... But they used the uniqueness of their voice to carve a niche for themselves. Love who you are and make the most of it. Change what you can change (if you want to) and accept that which you can't change. :)

I want to say that it was a scam from the start. When you want to develop any technology and make sure it works well, not only do you hire experts, you also have to convince the experts first. She didn't do that. She went straight to the big names with the big wallets. And considering the way she behaved in the company, there was something off from the start. I'm biased, admittedly, because this is my area of work, and I've got a chip on my shoulder, but I still think she knew.

I really like this format for the TMI channel, it's like 2 friends sitting down and bullshitting together. It allows you to personalize the story and say things you couldn't or wouldn't want to on a more public venue. I agree with your assessment, I think she was a true believer that hung on to her beliefs too long.

I do really like these "thoughts about" videos. They help me remember what the previous video was about, instead of it just passing through the ears like every other video I watch. I've always liked your voice, Joe. But please do talk to a voice coach, or better yet, an ENT doctor. I've done a ton of debunking videos on tech ideas like this, and many are True Believers. But some are credible engineers who know their idea is impractical and they are just looking to flip the company to a bigger investor. I think some of the blame has to go to the engineers hired, as they are just content to take home to big startup pay cheque until the wheels fall of the billy cart. Look up Meredith Perry's talk some time to get an insight into the wild thinking of a startup tech entrepreneur, it's, wow.

This was really useful. When you cover a story I'm already quite familiar with, I find it interesting to know why you chose to focus on some points while others are left out. The haunting thing about Theranos was the extent to which Holmes went to keep the secret: hiring private security to threaten and harass staff who tried to leak information, or sounded like they were unhappy with the disconnect between the reality of the product and the image of it given to the public. I don't feel sorry for the investors. They failed to do their due diligence. Apparently her family's neighbor gave the initial X million dollar investment - essentially as a favor. He was sufficiently well known that other investors just jumped on board, with each assuming the others had looked into the potential feasibility of the technology. But nobody did!

I little levity is important to keep one's sanity in check, so is getting one's thoughts out rather than keep them rattling around in the mind. I've learned this from experience, having suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for nearly 40 years (starting when I was a teen and couldn't get to sleep at night because my mind and panic attacks were pretty much nonstop). Also, if you need to take a break sometimes then go ahead, we don't need you getting burned out. I like the sound of your voice, judging by the way I've watched so many of your videos over the past several years. Hey Joe. Two things. I am a professor, and I often have to fill a lecture hall with my voice. At the beginning of Fall semesters (just two days ago actually) my throat always 'gets tired' or hurts a bit after doing so. Especially so if I have two back to back classes, so I have to do it for two+ hours. As the semester goes on, my throat gets used to it and it does not hurt any more. This is a common thing, that many faculty experience. So, I don't think you have to worry if this happens to you. Secondly, I have been a fan of yours for many years, and I have always thought your voice matches your 'every man' appearance very well. Most people think their voice sounds funny when they hear a recording of themselves. So unless you somehow are getting complaints that are limiting you professionally, again don't worry about it.

A brilliant couple of videos on a fascinating subject. One thing that's worth adding: field cross-over ignorance. Being an expert in one field doesn't make you an expert in another; I worked in professional analytical science for a decade but that didn't make me a physicist in spite of using some very high tech analytical machines. She may well have had the idea, then had the belief that money could solve everything... and very very soon someone who actually knew what they were talking about would have told them it wasn't possible (I'd have liked to know the rate of high-level scientist job turnover and the ndas they signed whilst the company was operating). Everything for me points to her seeing the vision without the reality from a very early stage.

It is nice to hear about the things you wish you could have talked about, how hard it might have been to research the topic, issues you had, weird theories you found that weren't right to be a part of the actual video. Just sharing whatever we didn't get to see is a nice little extra. And it doesn't hurt, right? You get some more views and can more directly communicate with the audience. Also, I think corridor crew has more viewer throughput than their main channel (main channel has more subscribers, but far fewer videos). So, there is a desire for this stuff.

My problem was that I was speaking from my throat rather than my diaphram. Using your throat makes your voice higher and it tires much much faster. “It’s the disease of thinking that a really great idea is 90% of the work. And if you just tell all these other people ‘here’s this great idea,’ then of course they can go off and make it happen. And the problem with that is that there’s just a tremendous amount of craftsmanship in between a great idea and a great product.” - Steve Jobs

I agree that she probably initially assumed that "fake it till you make it" would also be a success for Theranos, like it has been to a few other startups (when we ignore the many failures). But then it became too hard to make it, and there was only faking left.

5:45 Same, idk why, when hanging out with friends for a few hours if i'm particularly talkative that day i can feel my throat a bit sore the next, i always thought it was because in my day to day and in my job i don't need to talk for prolonged periods of time so my voice was just not used to it but who knows, didn't happen to me when i was young. Doesn't really bother me that much but i could never be a teacher or something similar that's for sure.

I think that what changed in Theranos was that once the big money started coming in the temptation was to keep the momentum going. They prolly started making small compromises at first with an ends justifies the means type of attitude. But then they couldn't find the courage to back down and admit their failures so they just doubled down to try to keep it going.

I have never liked my own voice either, so much so that I let the robot voice greet people on my cell, when I don't pick up. I never noticed the oddity of your voice before. Being that I have moderate Aspergers, I'll probably focus too much on its outright weirdness now. JEEZ MAN! Thanks Joe.

I used to work at a company that actually DID make a desktop Bio-Analyzer that really works. I'm not sure how many assays they had already developed, but it was more than 10 at least. And that was working way back in 2005

Absolutely like the follow up- it’s like when you give that practiced presentation and on the drive home ….ahhhh I forgot to say xyz!!! If it was a subscriber that thinks you are scamming with your canker pills then they have not watched enough of your content and should be blocked immediately lol!! Hard to say if she had good intensions- that is a really long way to go and a long time if she knew it was never going to work ,however does intent really matter here because it may be the case it was a delusional intent ,it may be a narcissistic path to stevejobness or straight up sociopathic behavior- who really will ever know? It will be interesting to see what punishment is given because she kind of has the Robin Hood thing going- most of the investors that got taken were surely looking to profit off of people’s worries and health issues so I’m kind of interested in what happens. Keep up the great work Joe !!!

I remember seeing a video on KZread at some point where you can hear her voice change up an octave or so, and then it's like she remembers she's supposed to sound different and switches it back. I just wish I could find the video.
