Personally, i was more impressed by the fact that he managed to win back to back titles on clay against rafa in madrid and rome, plus his amazing grand slam wins at wimbledon and especially the level at us open 2011. He ran a bit out of steam and had some injuries towards the end of year but by then his body had enough He was fitter in 2015, all through the year. No doubt. But 2011 he was pure savage. So i rate that higher. Let's not forget his unbeaten streak until french open , when it took an all-time brilliant federer performance on clay to get the win over him.

DjokerNole Cristi Federer was a bigger threat to Novak in 2011 than Roger because he beat him in RG and he should’ve beaten him in the Us Open as well.

2011 was better in tennis levels also u have to see Nadals and Federers level that year compared to 2015......

I remember this was the first time I've EVER seen Novak outlast Nadal, physically. It was a revolution of a kind...

One of the best masters final Ever

Djokovic really improved his dropshot over time.

You can see where Nadal mentally breaks down at 2-2 in the tie breaker. That point before has him overwhelmed and the pressure seems momentarily to stricken him with fear and Djokovic ceases the moment and pulls ahead as Nadal recovers quickly but to late. Wow on quality and craft from both geniuses of the sport

Novak's game is absolute as an avatar, he doesn't have any major flaws in the game, maybe a smash hit ??? but he is so good because he plays very deep and forces his opponent back, because Federer and Nadal have a hard time playing against him, they cannot easily attack him like other players and that is where the key to his success is the depth of the shot, of course his unseen mental strength.

Even if Nadal lost all the matches in 2011 to Djokovic, he was competitive in all of them. Each match was great level of tennis from both players, Novak just a bit better. Similar to Nadal-Federer rivalry from early years.

Exactly. Fedal never was one-sided except for some matches (and Federer won most of those), on the majority it was very even until the end.

oddly enough the only matches when Novak won in straight sets were the clay ones.

This might be the highest quality of tennis in terms of sheer skill that i've ever seen in a match.

These two were on a different level back then. 2011ver. Nadal is kind of underrated because of so many losses against Djokovic, but he was a monster too.

Was just as good more or less but forehand wasn't aggressive as often as 2010 or as deep and he had to change his serve again after developing shoulder problems. Those factors are what made it easier to overcome Djokovic imo even though Djokovic improved as well from 2010.

that what federer could not do in his prime from 2004-2010 against nadal, that could djokovic only do in 10 months from indian wells 2011 until Australian open 2012 against. That why novak prime is the highest in the tennis history

I completely agree, Even though I never went to Crandon park I loved the purple courts and it seems like the perfect place to play tennis. I loved watching miami, even more than indian wells

Djokovic's examples include: 1. USO 2010 semis(down 15-40 and two match points vs Federer in the set; comes up with clutch aggressive play to fight those off and eventually break Federer to win the match). 2. USO 2011 semis(down 15-40 and two match points on Federers serve; hits an all-time great return, breaks Federer and ends up winning the match). 3. AO 12 semis(down 2 sets to 1 against peak Murray and almost broken in the 5th set, where Murray may have served it out). 4. AO 12 finals- down a break to Nadal and exhausted in the 5th set. To put this into context, he had played a 5 hour marathon vs Murray the previous match. 5. Wimbledon 2018 semis- the defacto final the match that brought back Djokovic's confidence. Nadal played a ridiculous 3rd set and had several set points. Djokovic somehow finds a way to win it. In the 5th set, Djokovic overcomes two 15-40 games and wins the match. 6. Wimbledon 2019-I think we all know how this one went. A match where Federer played better 95% of the match. Djokovic saved 2 match points and had 0 unforced errors in all 3 tiebreakers which he won. 7. 2020 Dubai semis- He overcame a one set deficit and multiple match points vs Monfils to escape the jaws of death. 8. 2012 French Open- Down 1-2 sets to Tsonga and overcame multiple match points to pull through. 9. 2012 Shanghai Finals- Overcame a one set deficit and numerous match points vs peak Murray. There is definitely more, but these are just some notable examples that come to mind when remembering these two mental giants.

A game for the ages, what a match!

A heartbreaker for Rafa fans - he was 2 points away from winning late in the 3rd and his serve utterly deserted him late in the match. But kudos to Djoker, he was on an absolute tear in 2011.

Both players in top physical shape going at it. The rallies are brutal, both of them chase down anything they throw at each other. After this match i think Djokovic had a mental edge over Rafa. If Rafa would have pulled this one out we dont know how the rest of 2011 h2h might have gone

The greatest ever Masters 1000 final, in my opinion... Brutal, brutal tennis.... Rafa almost had it.. if he had pulled this one and ended Nole's streak, the history we see now could have been different... Nole turned into a mental block for Rafa,... I'm a Rafa fan but I love Novak as well...

One of the most important, hugely forgotten and clutch win of Djokovic career. hat was probably match where Nadal started to have fear of Djokovic. Djokovic was tired, while Nadal played fantastic. Nadal was two points away in 3rd at 6-5 yet Djokovic won match by extremely clutch playing. We don't need to remind us what was on line if Nadal won. Djokovic streak would end, Nadal would face Djokovic in future with more confidence and Djokovic would be probably more tense and his confidence would not be same.

Djokovic will smash all of the weak era bully’s records in two years.

The heavy defeat that year took Rafa to the next level. He has evolved from playing tennis that targets the opponent's backhand to playing more unpredictable tennis, hitting from side to side. It has also become more aggressive.

@@AJ-ng6bq yes Nadal's serve at uso 2010 was monster but Djokovic hadn't reached his prime at that point. Besides he likes the high spin serve of Nadal. Also it's true that he has the edge on clay but Novak clearly has the edge on hard and grass. No one can deny that.

@Ronish Padhy Nadal did have an incredible performance in us open 2013 but after that went on to lose 20 straight sets on hardcourts to Djokovic. There matches on clay are much closer nowadays. Besides Djokovic is 2-1 against Nadal in Wimbledon, the other win was at a small tournament . Nadal's only win came in 2007 when Djokovic hadn't hit his prime and retired due to injury.

Also, I honestly don’t think Djokovic is in the conversation of the greatest of all time if 2011 doesn’t happen for him. Imagine how different history would be if Rafa won a couple of those finals in that calendar year alone. This was a season for the ages. Beating Rafa in 7 (SEVEN) different finals (2 grand slam finals) and taking the #1 ranking from Nadal at Wimbledon. Nadal would be ahead of Roger for most grand slam titles of all time if it wasn’t for Novak. Magical year for Novak and one he needed to be involved within the conversation of one of the best ever in the sport of Tennis. Throughout his entire career he has been a thorn on the side of Nadal and Federer, but he’s no scrub Novak knows how to win and I predict he wins 20 grand slam major titles before he retires.

this is, in my opinion, the most important match in djokovic's career and the match that created djokovic we know today; if he lost this one, he'd probably never be able to build the confidence to see himself at the same level as fedal and nadal would've swept the 2011 season, setting himself clearly apart from djokovic and probably federer as well, for the rest of their careers.

@@Laland_1196 he was already a legend and arguably the greatest player of all time at wimbledon this year, so he already had the mindset of an all time great. he could've lost all those matches this summer and it wouldn't make a dent in his career. at miami 2011, he didn't have any of those, just back to back titles at AO, where nadal was the overwhelming favourite but got injured, and a title at IW(with a "surprise" win against nadal). this match made him believe he could go head on with federer and nadal.

Their game was based on defence and reliability back then, plus the courst were much slower. If you watch tennis matches from 10-15 years ago and compare with last years there was a lot more rallyes than now.

That has changed now. Djokovic beat Federer in 4 grand slam finals(all were great matches) and Nadal in 4 grand slam finals(2019 AO was a hammering). And Djokovic stopped Federer in grand slams(11) more than Nadal(7).

He truly deserved this. He is superior in almost everything and nadal is just too passiv on this surface.

Very high quality match but the courts are too slow and give Nadal the advantage here.
