    I have found that the cost of quote is no guide to the quality of install. A bad installer can pad a quote to increase profit, whilst doing a poor job. Only by informing yourself and asking questions about what will be done, do you get an indication of what will be done for the quote. Comparing materials specified in each quote is also necessary.

    The issue with this current environment is everyone is trying to charge a fortune using cost of living as the excuse. So an expensive quote doesn’t necessarily mean that you will end up with a decent installation, neither does check a trade reviews- I’ve seen some terrible work from businesses with good reviews.

    I had the same charger ( ohme home pro ) installed recently by Octopus. I was surprised to say the least when the van turned up and a young girl ( very earky 20's) got out. She stood about 5'2 ! she was lovely and did an absolutely brilliant job of installation . Explained everything to me. I paid £975 inc installation cost.

    I'm no EV specialist, nor engineer, but in all instances of data cabling and running power/data in server rooms cat5 (which I assume is the same cat5 you reference) is never to be run alongside power. We run time and data sensitive datacentres and not a simple EV charger, but the principle I think is the same. If I am wrong and the cable is not network cat5, shoot me!

  • @raikyoto2778

    @raikyoto2778

    depends on the Cat5 being protected from EMI by using shielding and usually you would put it 5cm apart. Also depends on the standards of the power cables and earth grounding.

    I also believe most of these chargers just use the “data” cable for a rs485 connection anyway (using one of the twisted pairs).

    Good job. Eddies of course with a metal box on AC. So the prewired flex is to be terminated into an exturnal double pole isolator as the charger is classed as fixed equipment being over 3Kw hence the lenth.. This is just like an AC unit, oven, shower, induction hob.... We have to do this in the EU anyways.

    Unfortunately the price you pay has no bearing on the quality of the install. Cheap does not necessarily mean bad and expensive does not necessarily mean good. Go with a spark or company with great word of mouth reputation, and great "Trustpilot" etc feedback,, and of course ask them to itemise the details of the install. Then you have a chance of getting a decent job.

    I agree with you on everything in this video except one thing. I wouldnt use an SWA gland because it counts as an exposed conductive part. Because the PEN protection is now built into the charger itself you can still have an issue if the neutral is lost through to Earth despite the case of the charger being class 2. I use compression glands, tightened, with the armourings earthed at supply side but insulated within the charger.

    4:45 Why did you install a second Consumer Unit? The other one didn't look full.

  • @bas5946

    @bas5946

    2 күн бұрын

    We always install a second CU when installing an EV charge point, for several reasons, One, if the customer has an older style non complaint board with no SPD etc, its cheaper to install a smaller secondary unit with everything in to bring the EV charge point install up to current regs, Two, if at some point in the future the customer decides on Solar PV with battery storage, the EV charge point is already segregated at the supply end so will not drain the ESS storage system when the car is plugged in providing the CT clamps are in the correct places.

    @sotaelectrical 100% buddy I agree with you and sorry to sound abit negative:( I think the best way is focused in niche electrical sectors and winning government tenders. Feel the domestic market now was a good cash business for us sparkies but the process of administration and the prices of parts to say comply with a fusebaord change is making it difficult. Used to do a fuseboard change for 550 and get the parts for 150 so make a very good profit. Now issue is you need say a 14 way board and has to be surge and tails 25mm and rcbo or God forbid arc fault then you talking £1000 fuseboard change and people rarely say yes to that kind of quote. Industrial is good but again alot are tied up with big electrical players. Honestly think needs to be more regulated and more training and old skool apprenticeship again

    The issue with getting someone in to do trades work is that however much you pay you're never immune from getting ripped off. At least if you end up with a shit job you can console yourself that at least you didn't pay top whack for it. (Am I cynical, probably. But that's from paying over the odds for crap work in the past. I tend to do most things myself nowadays - wouldn't take on an EVC though, I'm not daft).

    Couldn't agree more. I think the next time I employ someone not only will I get quotes but I'll also get independent references with pictures and video ideally! In fact I think I'll make sure I get someone with a KZread channel so I can see them at work first😂

    Cost is no indication of quality. I've seen jobs like that which are nowhere near the cheapest. Prices are gouged by stating exactly the same, "we charge more because we do a better job with higher quality" is a typical line everybody uses. Charging points are far too expensive to install, out of the question for the average household which is another reason why EVs sales are stagnant. Someone will come along with a much better way.

  • @dr_jaymz

    @dr_jaymz

    Thinking outside the box. One attribute to the costs are that only a qualified sparky can make all connections, on this video there are many connections to make, options for cables, the quality of the various junction boxes - all opportunities to scrimp or screw it up. If Elon came along he'd suggest that you come up with a smart way to measure the job up, then custom manufacture the whole thing in a factory with quality control and testing into hermetically sealed blocks to include everything right back to the meter connection. The install can then be largely carried out by a nonce pulling the cable through and screwing it to the wall with only the final connection requiring someone sprinkled with pixie dust. I can only find 33 issues to solve with this approach. It just needs a kickstarter to raise 10 million in investment and then I can do a runner with that (like they all do).

    These videos generate me smile always. UK is somewhere in shorly after war time with electric distribution on end customers. One of last countries where is not 3 face in every property, flat etc. These chargers delivery such a small power to charge electric vehicles. With 3 face is completly different story.

    Well what and how do you suggest doing about it then and are you happy to pay for it? Sure - if we knew now what we didn't know then we would have done this differently. I'm sure there are things we are doing now which in 50 years time will seem insane. I'm sure I install stuff which I think are future proofed in my house which in 10 years are made irrelevant. The facts are simple in most cases. Only a single phase was brought in underground to each property from the street. to change that for umpteen millions properties now would be horrendously expensive. ...and it's spelt 3 phase.

    On the other hand, UK homes have been getting 100A hookups for years, haven’t they? The standard here in NL is either 1x 35A (older homes) or 3x25A, and if you want anything heavier (you might with a heat pump and EV charger), your fixed fee jumps from €200 a year to €800.

    It doesn’t matter what come along the cowboys are always out in force , spent a large part of my time rectifying such work but thankfully I’m long retired . What I will say it has little to do with pride in their work , it’s more a case of total inability in the first place . And don’t get me started on the likes of the NIC , who do little to prevent this happening in the first place . I certainly don’t blame the customers , who have no idea what is involved in electrical work and why should they . It’s going to be down to the industry itself to become more proactive , to do a bit more naming and shaming of these parasites that blight the trade and put lives at risk in the process . Sorry but I get a bit P off when people get fleeced , and a good guy has to be brought in to pick up the pieces . Yes you can argue it’s all work , but it should be done right in the first place . Regards an old misery guts 😂
