    Narc, they're so disorganized because they're an indie studio. If you got to lay your eyes on the development pipeline of a studio operating at that kind of capacity it would melt your noggin. Remember Steven talking about sharing excel spreadsheets and talking about them every day, all that's corpo shit. There is such a mind boggling amount of planning involved in a game this big. Time, money, available devs, this dev can do that, this one can do this, but also that, this project is going to take 2 months, but actually takes 3 which doesn't allow this dev to continue on with his next project so we're swapping him over here which means we have to swap this guy over here. It's a fucking shit show and no studio gets it 100%, it's still being figured out and it's highly dynamic so there will always be problems. It nuts dude

    As someone who really likes when devs talk about game dev stuff on their dev streams... I thought that the recent server meshing video was really cool. They were talking and introducing a technology that's probably going to be foundational of future mmos. And, as someone who has been following the dev journey of some games for almost a decade at this point (exanima, zomboid...), sometimes the devs will realize that they need some major piece of tech that it's not actually developed yet, and everything they want to do is heavily dependent on it, so they have to stop everything and focus on it. And it's not like they didn't know such tech was going to be needed, it's just that they weren't at the point where they had to develop it. And that's what they had to show for themselves this time: a massive update on a background tech that's probably going to be the foundation of their whole game going forward. It's not the most exciting stuff for the casual gamer, but, the casual gamer is also unlikely to watch the 2 hours dev stream anyway. So they're making that showcase for the most avid and interested viewers.

The whole structure of the game, is going to make it far more fun to participate in, than to watch. And as you rightly say, they need to be a lot smarter to comment on a game this complex. I have 25 years in banking IT, and have been playing and creating board games and computer games all my life, since I bought a commodore64 in 1979, so I have a pretty good idea of games, software development, computer infrastructure and economics. So how many biomes have been completed for the Alpha 2 is not relevant. 2. If they are at the point where they are designing infrastructure and performance they are pretty much ready for Alpha 2. You don't design hardware until you know what the requirements of the software are. 3. The economy in AoC is going to be nothing like New World, because as a node levels up, lower level mats can be made scarce or be used for different purposes. For example the copper used for bronze weapons at node level 1, can be made scarcer and can be used to put on ships to make them faster and cheaper to maintain, at node level 4. Either way you have far more control over the economy than you would have in a static world. And about 30 other things I could point out.

    1 biome = proof of concept, easy to expand on (change textures and shaders, diff weather). Not every one is going to care about node stuff, casuals especially dont care about that nonsense they just want to lvl up and do quests. UI does not need polished in an alpha its literally place holder, in fact a lot of assets are considered place holders in an alpha game state. Star Citizen is known as being vapourware because they sell ships at silly prices for a game that is just a shell, that is not even relatable to AoC. I have been taking part in alphas and betas for 20 years and everything AoC are doing is considered more or less normal other than the fact a shareholder or a publisher is not forcing them to launch earlier than the intended development road plan.

    Seems like you never ever made a game, not even starting. When you hold 150 people on your company, you don't put them on "temporary work", everything has to be designed and prototyped before the actual production start. Now that stupid word "Alpha" in reality means exactly = "Post tech demo playable version". Basically once all basic systems are coded, put together and in case of mmo, AFTER server/client network testing. So you should have ~30% of the game by that time, all things considered. 1 biome and what ? making another level is not about changing textures and shaders lol, it's a new level prototyping, new assets, new sounds, new quests and text content, optimization, server optimization, sync rework... etc etc, and guess what, it should be planned from the beginning. UI should be already designed and prototyped before starting production (so think 1 or 2 years BEFORE even hiring programmers). It's not a joke to design cross-platform UIs. Know one thing, if a video game company can attract investors up to millions of dollars, that mean they have all the design already done. It's very simple, no design doc ? no investors.

I'm happily satisfied with the chicken dance and the night sky. These monthly updates are, for me, just something I can watch that keeps me interested so I don't forget intrepid exists. I don't care that they have gone quiet, please do, go focus on the game, stop talking to me, but when you come back to talk, and you have something to talk about, I'll be here ready.

    Gamedev here, big inovating projects in video games industry are no different than any startup. It has a major chance of failure, especially when we talk about network games like mmo. Is it a scam ? No, people work on the game everyday. Will they finish the game ? It depends on talent, design and financials. No devs in the world will work on a project "for passion", keep that for kids, or indies on their first game. You dislike those facts ? Then you have the wrong hobby.

    2 of the best games released recently, Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring absolutely had passion as a driving force. It's part of why they turned out so well. Larian Studios even stopped working on the DLC for the game because they didn't have passion for what they were doing and didn't feel that it would meet their standards. Big innovative projects are risky, but to say that passion is a deciding factor reserved for children and naive indies is simply untrue

    It is only data. There is no point in creating too much data before they have tested the framework it hangs on, that will slow them down if there are bugs in the engine. You guys keep on complaining that they are slow, but as soon as they try to get to Alpha2 faster, you complain. Any more than 3 of anything is a time risk, and often you can get by with 2. Test it and then there is a lot of fast copy/paste/inheritance, because you know it will work.

    For the balance part are skills in an mmo that much different than moba games? To me it seems like they're similar, or am I wrong in this?

  • @arnaudkaho7137

    @arnaudkaho7137

    13 күн бұрын

    It depends on the complexity, in a MOBA it's just about in-game items interacting with row skills numbers. In a modern mmo you would multiply that by player gear, qualities, enchantments, runes... whatever. Comparing a MOBA to an MMO is like comparing Bowling and Formula One.

When you look at "the space tomato" to learn about server meshing, you did realise that your content has a path to grown up. But you still actualy farming the same sh*t again and again, clickbait after clickbait When there is much much more quality subject to talk about AoC. Now it's been 6 videos, you decide for some random reason to "farm" view by clashing 2 community. This is not what I want from you. You have the right to do some much more quality driven content and deep dive into lore, classes, system, gameplay, ect ... You don't need to be hard stuck as the "copium lord", juste try new things more complexe, more visualy elaborated, ... For exemple, even if the subject of this video is not that great on my opinion, I would have watch a "resume" of your discution with SaltEMike where you go over your thinking when chating with him, with more elaborat thought. You need to realise that you are in competition with other video avaible on the platform, It only take 1 click to find something else to watch and I don't think you are in a good enough position for you name to be able to retaine people from switching, you are not asmongold...

    while i can understand the logic of it taking so long, i think steven said that they focused on building systems that let them implement all the stuff so far. Like the server meshing. I dont think they hand craft every node. They build a system that builds nodes for them. so i think A2 will last maybe 1 -1,5 years. Beta another 0,5 year. Then launch. On the playerbase per server i think 5k will be their goal. If 10k players per server is the goal, then 5k for A2 to test 1 continent would be logical. No word if Castles will be in early A2. We did see them in showcases.

    Ashes of creation is way easier to code when it comes to a server meshing solution, since it is only on a 2D plane with borders, and if they succeed it will become a REAL MMO too. Starcitizen is totally another beast where the game is seamless without borders and in true 4D space. What many people here doesn't seem to know is how Nova Quark and their Dual Universe indeed has working server meshing on the Unigine 2 engine, but sadly the developers fudged their project and it's at a standstill. They also have the most promising tech when it comes to voxels. I hope CIG buys out Nova Quark and implement their voxel tech in their Starcitizen v2 in the future.

    Point of clarification: Ragnarok Online when it debuted was BETA for several years. There were two international BETA servers. All while having an ongoing ALPHA test server that would be wiped more frequently, until the final game eventually shipped. It's not a new concept, we've seen this before. Will add that the BETA serves eventually turned into the official serves maintaining much of players progress & content minus a few pre-established things that was no shock to the community. I think people need to stop bringing their past trauma from other games over to new communities. It actually ends up being more toxic than anything.

    figuring out population density is literally the biggest challenge MMOs have. Make it good when its crowded and not so crowded....it needs to feel good during peak hours and off peak hours.....or 6 months after launch and half of the pop is no longer logging in. If they solve this problem, everything else is easy. Having a world that adjusts and grows organically with nodes should definitely help, meaning if certain areas lose pop or become abandoned, maybe the world swallows them back up and it organically evolves, rather than just leaving ghost towns behind.

Also, there seems to be groups of the community who each want a different thing for the game (let alone each individual player having a different idea of what it "could" be). Kinda like the PVPer vs PVEer dynamics which may (will) be difficult for the developers to reconcile. Anyways...
