The legend is still on KZread.
In my 50 years in this cb hobby I can honestly say that he is a true radio technician who does things the right way. This is something I learned years ago it separates the "TRUE" Techs from all the others.
Once I got a 10 meter converted radio i never went back. They talk so good. My first was a Stryker 440 and I loved it.
I spent 55 years as a journeyman mechanic, not a technician! Same in the radio business. There's just a tiny handful of people that can actually fix things. Im appalled at what goes on in car repair. Takes me 30 minutes to teach a "tech" how to install a pan gasket on a transmission. I've forgotten more than they know. My generation had one standard. Total perfection, period. Im just getting into radio and i need this guy to adjust and tune my radio and antenna.

Well said and no matter how well you explain it I still get customers that want it the old school splatter box way.
Warranty is shot the second you convert them. I've been repairing these for 40+ years. Most of the bozos out there are nothing more than smoke and mirrors light show salesmen. Good alignment takes more than just good equipment. It takes competent people to do the job properly for the frequency you intend to operate on. Any deviation from factory frequency ranges REQUIRES a complete alignment. Widebanding these chassis can be accomplished but as with any changes to the original circuitry design some degredation of receive and transmit quality and quantity will be seen. You can have it all but you can't have it all perfect lol He does a damn fine job explaining and servicing this gear from what I've seen. It's a breath of fresh air to see men trained to this level of competency. If you have a rig from him or one of us that know how to do this work properly consider your self lucky. There are plenty of charletons out there who are just taking your money.

Which means: there are plenty of charlatans that will just move that single wire, charge you $40, but they don't "realign the radio with a spectrum analyzer." Because, like Smokin' shows in his video, it takes more than a wattmeter to align a radio.

I am not surprised. I am not sure if anyone will possibly ever read this comment but here it is. I appreciate this video because you should know some things before you buy a cb radio. Now you may not no or believe anything that I have to say, I have sort of had some interest in cb radio for many years. I have felt some sense of accomplishment with adjustinging VR's in a realistc trc 458, it never ceases to amaze me that their is always things to consider with a CB.
I have an old Connex 3300HP that I bought in 1999 and the fellow converted it to CB. Just had that same fella to check it out. Said it putting out 55watts. I talk regularly to this guy that best we can tell, is about 35 miles away. He and I understand each other fine. Matter of fact, he asked me to cut mine back some. The other day I went to the next town down from us and that’s about 17 more miles. When I got in my pickup and the radio came on, I heard him and we talked from there, roughly 50 miles. That was in the afternoon. I think it does just fine.
I'm radio lover & this is really great info. Love it!

we used to make fun of galaxy operators back in the 90s..they would pay way too much money for a radio that had garbled audio on ssb and the circut board would crack with mobile use in short order. plus with the same amount of money one could get a much better radio with as much capability or more

Great video, I am a ham, used a Icon 718 for years just bought an Alinco DR135 UK, I was going to use it on CB and ham but I think now I will just use on ham band. I often suspected these radios didn't work properly when opened up to 11 m
@rpcomms1
3 жыл бұрын
the Alinco DR model pretty good and already "widebanded" for UK model ,but Radio engineer is correct on these models, need to optimised for 11m use .For UK users a note: FM on some of these Export radios is set for USA for generally 10m ham FM based on 4-5khz deviation (F3E16K0), in UK they need to be set at 2.2khz (2.5khz peak deviation),in Europe 2.00khz max due to the different FM bandwidth (F3E11K0 or EU F3E8K5)systems used compared to 10m FM USA markets, this point is often overlooked when sets exported to these countries, so this is why as chap explained needs a good radio engineer with right equipment to mod\set it up on these types of sets.Your alinco worse case just needs the fm deviation checked for UK cb use,and being the UK model should be set up correctly. Rob RP Comms UK
I'm from the old CB days of the 1970s & 1980s. In those days i repaired or did mods on hundreds of radios. I lived in an area where CBers would get into splatter wars. I would do frequent mods for a select few to get away from the children. Most of the time you could find me on 27.645 or 26.805. When to skip would roll in i would be on 27.705. My first antenna was a starduster. Most of my antennas where home built. Most people would ask what kind of antenna i was using. I tell them oh just a coat hanger. Some would come by to see my antenna. People leave with their mouth wide open. Home made double stack beams on a 30 foot tower. Most of the time they stay pointed south-east. I caught the best skip roll in at 5:00 am. I now have a galaxy 959 with a few mods and a 30 watt power amp with a dipole antenna made from a couple of fire sticks. Well those where the good old days. Have a good CB day

Your right 100% Ps do you charge 50 to 75 more than 40 witch is 90 or over 100 to swap it to 11meters and tune it ?
Ok so stupid question. What about difference between the galaxy 11 meter or cb vs galaxy 10 meter tuned for cb. Is it just a power or range thing and if so what are the limitations when everyone else is underpowered.
If you do covertion your gonna have to tune to it. Cause that radio would have kicked some ass on 10 meter. But. We gotta tune to where we talk. Good video.

awesome video !!! i will try
Thousands of dollars in potential fines per radio for converting and selling that radio in the US. The entire reason the radios used in 11 meter (CB) are so restricted in range is because nobody has demonstrated the technical capabilities to be trusted with more power and range. If you are smart enough to get a ham license, go get one. It's not really hard. If you are not smart enough you are the reason CB is such low power and just stay with horrifically expensive options available to CB users. Frankly, $300 would buy you a much better Ham radio than that. And the term "aligned" is jsut BS for something you don't need.

@@smokinjoeselectronics442bu7 , That's true. But it remains as illegal to convert, market, ship, transfer, own or even use these radios before or after they have been converted. T&A Travel Centers in Troutdale, Oregon got a $7,000 fine for selling one of these radios WAY back in 2001. Just one, and it was unconverted. transition.fcc.gov/eb/Orders/2006/DA-06-1334A1.html In September 2018 the FCC made an announcement about Baofengs being sold by Amcrest, but in the same document they referenced a $90,000 settlement of a $125,000 forfeiture to Pilot travel center for multiple counts of selling these type of radios, another forfeiture of $25,000 to Love's Travel Centers for selling the same type of radio, and still another to company like yours called CB Shop and More in Loveland was fined $7000 for selling a single radio of this type. docs.fcc.gov/public/attachments/DA-18-980A1.pdf The FCC is low to get to this, and they quite often go after people doing this type of things years after they stopped doing it. And they fine them for every day they ahd the offer open, up to $149,000 per year. I realize that this sounds like I am saying the sky is falling, but the penalties are real and severe. Everyone involved needs to be aware of what they are doing.

Maybe your Galaxy got "converted," as shown in this video, by moving a wire from here-to-there, but it wasn't followed by a tune-up. The challenge is finding a shop that will do the tune-up. As the video shows, there's more than just tuning for Max on a wattmeter. The radio shop should also have a spectrum analyzer, so their tune-up will eliminate all those spurious frequencies from your transmissions, which will allow maximum power on your desired signal, on the frequency that you really intend to be transmitting on.

Or in alot of areas in the U.S. because there aren't alot of people using them these days . .but i guess i can pull the top cover soon and see if the wire had been moved like shown in the video and will give me a better idea of what was done . And why the driver DID'NT like it ?? who i bought it from . But i do remmber one thing HE HAD A POWER Mc on it so maybe it was turned up and the Mc interfeared with it for what ever reason . ? Anything is possible at this point . But i might get the man in the video to go threw it and fix it up soon so its ready to go.
Well in the old days you bought your Cobra 29 and then you put in a Conex board and an echo mic and added six or seven switches across the back and added channels. Suddenly you had $500 into your Cobra 29. Even more if you added a linear. You might as well get in exports that has all the bells and whistles anyone would ever want and have it properly tuned and aligned you will have the next best thing to a ham radio. Make sure you pay attention to what different radios have because of radios do not have an SWR meter or a Rodger beep. Just look around and see the difference and make sure you get the radio you want. You will be happy with an export

I find it great that you went to such lengths to let new entrants to the hobby learn the error of their ways, but I think you should have lingered more on those extra large odd harmonics, and talked about it some more - so they really understand. Maybe show another radio on a nearby channel enduring the adjacent channel interference. Peace, I won't say 73's, too common now. :)
@whatsascrewdriver5572

Roger. I'd have mentioned exactly what's up 5 MHz and what's down 5 MHz, where those spurious signals were located. 26.6 MHz, plus 5 MHz is 31.6 MHz. In the 21st Century, taxi cabs used to use frequencies around 31 MHz; who knows who's using it now. And 26.6 MHz minus 5 MHz is 21.6 MHz which I think is a shortwave broadcast band. After "converting" the radio (moving that wire from one solder pad to another), one argument in favor of following up by getting the complete re-alignment is to avoid putting out signals on frequencies that you're not even intending to talk on. At worst, those spurious signals might invite complaints, and complaints are what activates the FCC into action. You know, if the FCC receives a complaint, they might investigate the situation in 5 or 6 years. Otherwise, it's just being a good citizen to avoid spreading signals all over the spectrum, when all you really wanted was to talk on 27 MHz.
I tried bookmarking that link you gave and my browser came back and didn't like it. What URL (web link) do you recommend?
I heard Mike past away last night in his sleep.🙏🏻
