Normally there a couple black waste barrels out front, but one day, a red barrel was there. Sure enough, it had the "No Flames" icon on it. "My god..." I uttered to myself, "They're real..."

Doesn't even have to be a barrel in some cases. I've seen red explosive crates. Sometimes it's sci-fi-looking gadgets with red flashing lights. In some games, it's even red glowing mushrooms.

@@MedicMain9 I don't think that's actually rare, Romero has always been very open to questions and tons of fans have asked him all kinds of things over the years. He's also done stuff like appear on twitch streams and such. He's a chill guy and very approachable. It's just that for a long time it was difficult to reach out to him because Doom was made during the really early days of the internet but these days it's very easy.

This video is great, but it forgets one absolutely crucial historical element that sits right in the middle of the entire tangle of where video game explosive barrels came from. It's so obvious that it can be overlooked, but shouldn't ever be excluded from a discussion of video game culture, or even general modern western culture. One particular man's influence is immeasurable, and yet you forgot him. First there were the post-WW2 era action movies. One of the most iconic being Dambusters (1955). The generation of kids watching that movie grew up to be the dominant creatives of the 1970s, whose imaginations blended scenes from that film with those of heroic western/Tarzan/military/sci-fi/fantasy serials of the 1950s and 1960s. Then one fateful day in 1974, one emerging central figure amongst those inspired creatives, a certain Mr. Steven Spielberg, protested with the eternal words: "No. We CANNOT just kill the shark. We HAVE TO BLOW IT UP!" You forgot Jaws. "Smile you sonovabi*ch!" Jaws. Is why. The explosive barrels. Exist.

UpstandingCitizen when the baseline for explosive is “existing,” then nothing is particularly explosive. It would be a redundant adjective. For the Goldeneye barrels to be classified as explosive, it would have to be significantly *MORE* explosive than say, a chair. For the same reason, you don’t describe a tree as a “wooden tree” or an ocean as a “wet ocean.” You may not have realized it, but you asked a semantic questions, so you got a semantic answer.

You can't do HL2DM to this day without the explosive barrels. Custom maps sometimes use their own skins for barrels too.

Your editing is Phenomenal, sir! Actually, your whole production is stunning. And I love your sense of timing.

Still weird to me that we can just Email the people who designed the games to which all modern games are inspired in part by. No other artistic medium has such luxuries.

Felipemelazzi Erik Wolpaw is now taking over as the main writer of _Half-Life: Alyx_ from Marc Laidlaw although according to Erik he still asks Marc questions about the lore almost everyday to try not to contradict Marc’s timeline.

You remind me always that quality is more important than quantity, even if it sacrifices more resources. You are one of the most honest content creators out there and I cannot stress how much of a great impact you have on me as a person. You're the best!

Ahoy (Stuart Brown) is that guy who looked like Mark Strong when he was in school, but got all the girls because he SOUNDED like Mark Strong.

If AHOY did breakable wooden boxes next, I'd still watch it. Anything he makes is the pinnacle of quality over quantity. He could make a video about fucking anything and it'd still be worth watching 10 times out of 10.

i remember seeing the concept of exploding barrels in millipede, altough they were called "DDT Bombs" and not barrels, but still, the mechanics were the same.

Like in any shooting games(FPS and the likes), explosive barrels is becoming a staple inclusion these days, with some being manually deployed as traps in some. I do, for one, like that as a unofficial entry of Iconic Arms series too!

i like how this is kind of an un official entry in the NEW iconic objects series yay for typing out an entire sentence to change a few words instead of just copying and pasting to make the edit and then typing out an even longer sentence to describe the process of typing out the sentence by scratch rather than editing

The thing about Ahoy is that, with all of the types of gaming content on this site, it's rare to find something so sophisticated and diligently produced. It's very refreshing.

I can’t emphasise enough how much I really love your videos. Such competent storytelling and impeccably constructed.

Just when you thought that he had ran out of extremely interesting video game facts, you are once again riveted to a new video about the past of video games. Thank you and keep up the great work.

Shadow of The Tomb Raider has a short side mission/challenge where you need to explode these red barrels. In that instance, blowing them up offers you no real advantage over enemies as it's done outside combat zone where none are present. You however receive some XP for doing it but its funny how its just making them go boom for the sake of boom.

It's after R-Type, but Capcom used charged shots regularly from the late 80s on, e.g. the NES port of 1943 and Megaman 4. I think the NES port of Strider had a charged shot after some upgrades.

Would love to see an Ahoy video on Alternate fire modes for guns in games. Perhaps with a focus on the more interesting ones, rather than just Semi/burst/auto that are commonplace in military shooters

@@PershingDragoon Alternate fire would sure give a spotlight to Perfect Dark. Every single weapon in that game has a secondary ability, and some of them are pretty wacky, like turning the Laptop gun into a sentry, or the Dragon (I think that was its name) into a proximity mine disguised as the gun.

I don't know what your experience with games in general is, and it might not have the sheer impact that it did when it first came out, but the game is still damn good. I just bought a VR headset just because I want to play the sequel that's coming out in a few weeks so badly.

In doom because of the way the game works when you shoot a barrel there's usually a monster close enough to it that you end up hitting the monster not the barrel so I hardly ever actually kill monsters with the barrels.

Here we go, Half-Life 2 time. Those accursed barrels... Giving me nightmares.

Agreed. The moment at 2:22...I just felt my gut clench when that happened. It was the first game where I actually had to think twice at shooting an explosive/flammable barrel if some enemies are standing next to it.

The fact that they had a timer was very innovative. The moment you saw a flaming one being used on you, your mind immediately tells you to look out and be aware of your surroundings. When I got 2:30 in game I freaked out for a second and then thought it's fine, I should leave though...then the buzzing started...

For the record, IIRC sources seem to suggest that it was something that id momentarily considered early while in the process of outlining what the game was going to be like, but they ended up deciding against it. There's no known evidence or quotes from developers that suggest that the game spent any real amount of time in development as a licensed title. Alien's influence still can be seen however, as Ahoy points out.

@metalfaust19 Who Framed Roger Rabbit was my first experience with freedom in video games. I would just explore everything and ride in that cab without actually progressing anything since it's more of an adventure game and I didn't know English back then.

I was like "really? Explosive barrels? What a disappointment..." >twenty minutes pass "Wow! I never knew how interesting the history of explosive barrels is! Wait don't end!"

Virtual Cop 2 (1996,SS) introduced explosive barrels throughout the stages, at the corners of warehouse, moving platforms of the hangar even on a residents balcony or one of the flat in a residential building IIRC, they're even being thrown by enemies and bosses, the one thing I can't forget is they produce a shockwave once exploded

I liked how you managed to squeeze Half Life: Alyx in there at the end. Last minute change, I suppose?

it's certainly cause hl:a is the current year title of a franchise the dude likes. plus hl's evolution goes from "revolutionary pc shooter" to "flagship franchise of a whole new, independant tech", so seeing its abundance of barrels from 1998 to 2020 is most relevant to the strength of the convention. that's all that's interesting, nothing to do with the quality from one game to the other.

Something that I never thought about becomes a topic for a fascinating video. Thoroughly enjoyed that!

Sega Action Fighter 1986 had them. Hard to spot as 2D sprites from the air but on the docks there are red barrels you can explode with your secondary attack.

Thank you so much for including the fact that the Borderlands series has multiple, elemental explosive barrels. And when you have a “kids” cartoon (Regular Show) show it’s two main characters playing a video game featuring explosive barrels and they make a joke out of it, you KNOW it’s universal

Barrels, they always explode in video games. There is always disappointment when they don't.

Gunpowder kegs were barrels of sort and definitely exploded so maybe that’s the inspiration
