Exploring White Pocket, AZ | Sprinter 4x4 Overland in Arizona
White Pocket is one of the most dramatic locations in the Colorado Plateau. It sits just over the Utah line in Arizona in a very remote area accessed by a very, very deep sandy road. With proper planning and airing down, a 4x4 Sprinter van can access this wonderland of stone and glorious desert camping. Help is far away and expensive, so make sure you and your machine are ready for the journey.

That's great! Glad we could reconnect. Wasn't White Pocket amazing!
White Pocket was so windy one time the tan I’d gotten in Florida the week prior was completely sand-blasted away.

Always wanted to know if a Sprinter 4x4 was driven out to White Pocket, thanks for sharing this experience Peter! This is one of the best places to go while you try your luck with the Wave permits and generally if you are in the area.

I can see how that sand could be problematic. But in a 4x4 Sprinter with good tires and aired down a bit it did really well.

I love your video's. You take us right into the heart of the rugged landscape. I can only wish one day to experience. Your van is like no other on KZread van video's. What sets you apart from the rest is that dare devil that thrives on the thrill of driving on the edge of no matter where it is. Your drone footage is amazing!

Great video, loved seeing the drive in. I actually lived at both Bigsink and Poverty Flats (there was a nice house at poverty then) in the 1970's as a kid. My dad was the foreman on the XX (X-diamond-X) ranch. We rode horses and drove pickups all over that Plateau. We use to picnic at white pockets, even park the trucks on the outcropping itself as nobody came out there in those days, literally nobody. We used those corals that you drove past getting close to White pockets when we would gather the cattle. Total solitude in those days. Can't believe there is a parking lot now. You did a fantastic job capturing the road and white pockets itself. The drone shots were remarkable. Thanks for such a great video, really enjoyed it.

Thanks for writing this. It must have been amazing back then having these areas all to yourself. What a wonderful childhood experience. I wish I had a time machine to explore many places in the the SW.
Great video footage btw. Your drone footage is cinematography level good.

@@Famagogo Oh, this is good to know. I am chatting with my husband to see if he may want to go with me on a trip like this one. Our best friends have just purchased an incredible 4x4 truck and their first camper, I think my husband may be open to a trip like this one now. Crossing fingers for next year. I like the idea of renting a jeep, I did not know we could do this. Thank you so much ,Peter and Kathy, I enjoy learning from both of you on your amazing adventures. .

epic video! driven in sand many times but have heard disasters about the road to White Pocket. We’ve got a 4x4 truck camper we’ve driven all through Baja. Think we can make it to White Pocket? Air down and momentum are a rigs best friend in sand.
@Famagogo

Thank you! I heard the same stories too. The sand is very soft and deep. I can't say for sure. But if you air down with good AT tires, Keep your momentum as you mentioned you should be fine. If not have a set of MaxTrax and a shovel or even better a winch and a buddy in another truck. The real issue comes from meeting another vehicle going the opposite direction. If your forced to slow down or worse stop in a deep soft place it can be difficult to regain momentum. So always be looking way down the road and thinking of good spots to pull off if another vehicle needs to pass. This makes a huge difference for both parties. Hopefully they are being thoughtful as well. Have a blast out there. It's a really great spot!
Nice use of the drone!!! I noticed a couple shots where you placed the camera on the sand as you drive over it. I’m guessing you stopped and walked up to a point and placed the camera down before driving over it?

@@Famagogo 🤣🤣🤣 good one and you’re welcome
Planning to do this on September or April and with a 2WD sub done alstrom and similiar area kind of sandy but not sure if this is more sandier 😳😁so looking for more youtube video about it to see the dirt road situation. I might be taking a big risk .

I won't say don't go. But make sure to air down, bring MaxTrax, a shovel and a buddy with a winch. It is some very deep sand. If you don't get bogged down with oncoming traffic it might go really smooth. It's having to stop and start that is the issue. Maybe go in really early or late to avoid the traffic. It will be an adventure.
Beautiful video. You have a great ability to articulate your experience. Btw,we once camped at the corral where you took a right turn but we did not dare the road since our van is 2wd.

@@Famagogo yes. i need to get there. Usually i like to be in UT in winter but we had to leave our van in Calgary and fly home for a family emergency and will only be able to go back to Calgary in the spring. So not this year... maybe next year (after Alaska, who knows)
I've noticed on drone shots there is a slight stepping of the video footage , is that a video styling thing or a frame rate issue on YT?.
